I. INTRODUCTION
1. The reason for choosing the topic:
Nowadays English has played an important part in our life. It has been
considered as an international language all over the world, it has become a
compulsory subject in all secondary schools. It is the key for anyone who wants
to get success in life. One of the biggest reasons is the strong development of the
open economy, especially in the period of integration, when our country has

become a member of the World Trade Organization, this makes the demand for
English in social communication increase. Everyone recognizes that foreign
language, especially English, is the needed capital to live and work in the new
age. After the mother tongue, English is essential in daily communication, in
many fields such as trading, reading foreign books, finding work in foreigninvested companies. Learning English has become a widespread movement. In
order to meet these needs, the learners must have a solid knowledge. They must
be good at skills, especially the listening skill. Good listening skill leads to good
pronunciation and of course the learners’ speaking skill can be improved as
well. No one can deny that, listening is one of the key skills in communication.
And I think it is necessary for the teachers to improve the learners’ listening skill
when they are in the first grade. Therefore, I have selected and implemented the
theme: "Experiences in improving listening skill for the students in class 6A at
Nguyen Chich secondary school".
2. Research purposes .
- Studying this topic will help English teachers like me gain the
following experiences:
- How to organize an effective listening lesson.
- Follow steps to conduct an effective listening lesson.
- Create awareness and excitement for students to be interested in
listening skills.
- Guide the students to self –practice to be better at listening skills.
3.Research subjects .
1

- Subjects: The topic revolves around the study of improving listening
skill for the students at secondary school by designing listening exercises.
- Performed on the students in class 6A at Nguyen Chich secondary
school.
4. Research Methods.

During the study of the topic, I have used many methods such as:
- Methodology of reasoning
- Method of reading and using materials, books in teaching English,
learning form software on the internet related topics.
- Observation method.
- Observing the activities of the students and the ability of the students’
listening when applying the information technology in English lessons.
- Experimental methods. Teachers conduct experimental teaching basing
on the specific requirements of listening lessons.
- Investigation method. Teachers ask questions to check, evaluate the
grasp the content of the lessons of the students.
- Method of summarizing and drawing experience through the activities of
myself and colleagues.
II. THE CONTENT OF THE INITIATIVE EXPERIENCE.
1. Theoretical basis of the initiative experience.
As with other subjects, foreign languages follow the same sequence of
steps, the teachers always use good methods to get the highest qualified
students. But learning foreign languages is more difficult than other subjects.
Because it is a completely new subject for students. It requires the learners to
grasp the meaning and use of that language. They also have to know how to
apply the lessons in life. Whether this process is effective or not partly due to the
teacher's instruction. Usually in a "Listening period", the learners are very
passive, because they always think "Listening" is just for pronunciation and
retrieval information only. In fact, if they do not have a good listening method,
2

they will not be able to understand and find information quickly. Therefore,
teachers must always use the best methods for students to make accurate
judgments and motivate them to learn and really enjoy learning, actively

develop the lesson and plan to prepare the lessons well before going to class,
especially for the weak students. In this method, the teacher is the instructor,
while the students are always active. They must have foreign language elements,
communication skills, through listening, speaking, reading. These skills must
always support each other, so that they can understand and manipulate English
correctly and skillfully. Reading and speaking activities will be encouraged to
support and test listening comprehension, which helps to improve listening skill.
On the other hand, students use language as a medium of communication. This
process demonstrates that students themselves are active and they want to take
part in learning activities throughout the curriculum. Thus, the lessons are really
meaningful and students themselves are interested in learning, because they can
listen and speak English as well.
2. The real situation before applying the initiative experience.
In order to keep up with the change of the social, the method of teaching
English must be changed in order to help the students use the communication
skills fluently. To improve our students' skills of communication, we must make
cheerful environment for them to learn. Language practice activities are very
good for students to review and acquire the knowledge enthusiastically.
Most of my students are not good at communicating. The first reason is
that their vocabulary is very poor. Moreover, their listening skill is not good as
well. A period just only has 45 minutes, I think our students don’t have enough
time to practise the skills, especially listening skill. It’s very necessary for them
to have time and exercises to practise after school.
As a teacher of English, I have been thinking about “what should I do to help
my students develop listening skill most effectively?”. So I have designed some
exercises for my students to practise after the lessons. This is the reason why I
3

choose the theme: "Experiences in improving listening skill for the students in

class 6A at Nguyen Chich secondary school".
Please be shared to get additional comments from all of the colleagues.
3. Innovations or solutions used to solve the problem
Because of its limitation, in this theme, I only mention some listening
exercises designed in units 1, 3, 5, 6 of English 6. Then I use
“ which helps convert any written texts
into spoken words. This tool is very useful because it can either help us adjust
fast or slow speech or help us choose male or female accent.
3.1. The advantage of the listening exercises.
The below listening exercises are very useful. They help students not only
develop listening skill but also review the vocabularies, the pronunciation of
some sounds, the use of some structures and the parts of speech. Especially
these exercises help students remember the topics of communication.
a/ Unit 1 (English 6)
The exercises help Students both develop listening skill and remember:
- The pronunciation of the sounds /∂u/ and /ʌ/. (Exercise 1)
- The use of the verbs have, do, play, study with some words. (Exercise 2)

Da Nang has a population of nearly 800,000 people. The Han River flows
through the city. The city part on the east bank is newer and more spacious. The
city part on the west bank is more crowded. There are five bridges across the
river. The Han River Bridge is the newest one now.
The cost of living in Da Nang is the lowest in Central Viet Nam. Da Nang
has many beaches. Among them, Non Nuoc beach is one of the most beautiful
beaches in the world. But walking in the streets on a summer afternoon is not a
good idea in Da Nang. There are not many trees so there are not many shadows.

4. The tested results.
Last year, I taught English in class 6A. In every period of teaching, I
always design listening exercises to improve listening skill for the students. I
find out that these exercises have provided the students with the comfortable and
effective way of learning English. The students feel excited and they are eager to
wait for English classes. They can understand the lessons more deeply and more
naturally. They have become better and better at listening skill and more self
confident in communicating in English with each other. Their pronunciation has
improved so much. They either speak English in the class or outside the school
confidently. They not only listen to exercises designed by the teacher but also
listening to English songs as well. They even take use of their recess to
communicate in English or listening to English songs. Their listening skill has
improved so quickly. Based on the results of the students’ learning, I had the
results of classification ability of listening and communicating of the students in

III. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDTIONS
Learning a language is a process that requires students’ continuous efforts
and listening exercises create fun learning environment, and maintain their
interest in learning. At the same time, they increase the motivation, encourage
the students to be active to participate in learning activities.
Recently I have used the listening exercises to help my students practise
after school in the afternoon. It can be seen that the listening skill of the students
has increased significantly. Moreover, the students feel more excited to learn,
they are more confident in communication and their communication ability has
been improved remarkably.
The above listening exercises are very useful. They help students not only
develop listening skill but also review the vocabulary, the pronunciation of some
sounds, the use of some structures and the parts of speech. Especially these
exercises help students remember the topics of communication and improve
their English quickly. In short, listening exercises bring efficiency in teaching
and learning English. Therefore, the teachers should use listening exercises as an
indispensable part of the teaching process, create the atmosphere of fun English
learning, enthusiasm and enjoyment. In addition, the teachers should focus on

the selection of suitable listening exercises for the students’ levels. In order to
get success in using listening exercises in teaching English, these are important
things to both teachers and students.
1.For the teachers:
- Must have a deep understanding about the lessons.
- Must refer many kinds of books, documents.
- Must be responsible, enthusiastic for the students.
- Must prepare the means and appliances of teaching carefully.
2.For the students
16

- Must prepare the lesson carefully before class.
- Must meet all kinds of books for class service.
- Must obey the instructions and guidance of the teacher.
3. For the leaders
The current means and teaching aids for the English subject are not still
supplied enough. So the leaders should equip adequate equipments such as
radios, tapes, pictures, projector and especially functional rooms in order to
successfully carry out the objective of teaching and learning English in this
stage.
The above is my own experience in using listening exercises in teaching
English to improve listening skill for the students in class 6A at Nguyen Chich
secondary school. But the listening exercises that I would definitely present
can’t help avoiding limitations. I look forward to all the colleagues’ constructive
feedback in order to improve the efficiency of class time, contribute to
improving the students’ listening skill and the quality of teaching and learning
English as well.
I sincerely thank you!
