III. READING
A. Reading the following passage then choose the correct answer.
Glands manufacture and secrete necessary substances. Exocrine glands secrete their
products through ducts, but endocrine glands, or ductless glands, release their products
directly into the bloodstream
One important endocrine gland is the thyroid gland. It is in the neck and has two lobes
on each side of the windpipe. The thyroid gland collects iodine from the blood and produces
thyroxine, an important hormone, which it stores in an inactive form. When thyroxine is
needed by the body, the thyroid gland excretes it directly into the bloodstream. Thyroxine is
combined in the body cells with other chemicals and affects many functions of the body.
The thyroid gland may be underactive or overactive, resulting in problems. An
underactive thyroid causes hypothyroidism, while an overactive one causes hyperthyroidism.
The former problem, called myxedema in adults and cretinism in children, causes the growth
process to slow down cretin's body and mind do not grow to their full potential.
Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, results in extreme nervousness, an increase in heart
action, and other problems.
Either hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism may result in goiter, or an enlarged thyroid
gland. A goiter will appear when the body is not getting enough iodine. Goiter is less
common today, since most people use iodized salt.
51. In line 1, the word "secrete" is closest in meaning to
A. Indiscernible.
B. Emit.
C. Display.
D. Absorb.
52. A cretin is ______

A. A child with hyperthyroidism.
B. An adult with an underperforming thyroid gland.
C. An extremely irritable child.
D. A young person with hypothyroidism.
53. The word former in paragraph 3 refers to ________.
A. Overactive thyroid. B. Hypothyroidism. C. Hyperthyroidism. D. Secretion.
54. If a thyroid gland is not working enough, the illness is known as ______.
A. Hyperthyroidism. B. Hyperactivity.
C. Hypothyroidism.
D. Excretion.
55. The main idea of the passage is _______.
A. He function and illness of thyroid gland.
C. Secretion with and without glands.
B. How glands work.
D. The illness of an overactive thyroid gland.
B. Reading the following passage then check TRUE or FALSE.
Centuries ago, when physicians had very primitive tools at their disposal or had none
at all, taking a patient's medical history was sometimes the only way to identify diseases
patients were suffering from. These days, however, there are many modern diagnostic

4|P a g e

techniques that utilize cutting - edge devices and tools, which help in diagnosis and keeping
people healthy. Let's take a closer look at some of them.
The choice of a diagnostic technique depends on the symptoms a patient experiences.
For example, if a female patient comes to consult a GP, concerned about a lump on her breast

she discovered when she was performing self - examination, the GP will suggest doing a
mammogram, which will allow a specialist to determine what the lump is exactly and if any
further tests need to be done. If the mammogram indicates the presence of a tumor, then a
biopsy is needed to determine whether the tumor is malignant or not. Biopsy i not the only
technique employed in case of a suspicion of cancer. The use of a particular method or device
is determined by the patient's symptoms, results of the tests and the location of the tumor. For
instance, if there is a suspicion of colon cancer, an endoscopy is performed. which involves
inserting a tool directly into the organ (in this case the colon). In the case of women, a
common screening method used in order to detect cancerous or pre - cancerous changes in
the female reproductive system is called a Pap test, named after a Greek Doctor Georgios
Papanikolaou, who invented it.
Some techniques are less invasive and do not require putting anything into the body or
removing anything from it. For example, if doctors suspect a brain tumor, they will
recommend tomography, performance of which will result in a detailed the brain.
Tomography belongs to a group of non - invasive techniques which use X - rays to
produce images, called radiography, which also includes taking an X - ray in the case of a
bone fracture. Although images produced through radiography are commonly referred to as
'X - rays', some professionals argue that they should be called 'radiographs', as 'X - rays' are
just photons of energy and cannot be seen by the naked eye.
There are more non - invasive techniques used in case of various medical conditions.
The electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of them. It is a test, which records the electrical activity
of the heart, used to detect and study such heart problems as a heart attack or arrhythmia.
Another one is a blood culture, performed to test for and find an infection in the blood caused
by bacteria or fungi. Such tests are invaluable tools, as they make it possible to verify and
confirm the doctor's diagnosis and thus assure the patient that the treatment is appropriate
before the patient gives their consent for further treatment.
Besides self - examination, all of the methods described in the article require a visit to
a specialist clinic or a hospital unit and are sometimes an unpleasant or painful experience .
Therefore, we should not forget to go for regular check - ups at local surgeries so as not to
lead to a situation when they will be necessary.

56. Mammogram - a diagnostic technique - indicates a malignant tumor.
A. False.
B. True.
57. Cancer is usually diagnosed by biopsy.
A. False.
B. True.
58. Biopsies or endoscopies are quite common yet invasive screening methods.
A. False.
B. True.
59. A heart attack on arrhythmia can be diagnosed with electrocardiogram (ECG).
A. False.
B. True.
60. Both tomography and radiography use X - rays to produce images.
A. False.
B. True.

III. READING
A. Reading the following passage then check TRUE or FALSE.
Doctors have a new tool to use when diagnosing breast cancer. It is called Google
Health, and of course comes from Google. The tool uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to
recognize anything abnormal in breast tissue. Researchers trained the Al program to detect
abnormalities. It read a huge number of results from X - rays over the past few years. X - rays
are currently what doctors use to detect breast cancer. The Google Health program will help
doctors in reading these X - rays more accurately. The current system is that two doctors
agree on whether or not an X - ray shows cancer . If they cannot agree , they ask a third
doctor . Google Health will make this diagnosis quicker.
Researchers from Google Health worked with experts from Imperial College London
to design the Al program. They trained the program by inputting X - rays from more than
76,000 women in the U.K. and more than 15,000 in the USA into its software. The software
then produced an algorithm. In hospital tests, the algorithm did better at reading X - rays than
six doctors. Google Health spokesperson Dominic King said:" Our team is really proud of
these research findings, which suggest that we are on our way to develop a tool that can help
doctors spot breast cancer with greater accuracy". The World Cancer Research Fund said
over two million new cases of breast cancer were reported in 2019.

these people survived nineteenth century, almost half of the patients who underwent surgery
died as a result. Many the actual procedure, but their wound would later become infected and
ultimately lead to their death.
These frequent infections occurred because antiseptics did not yet exist, and the
medical professionals of the time had no idea about infection control or disinfection. Many
doctors believed that the infections were caused by bad air getting into the wound, and they
would instruct the nurses to air – out the hospital every day. Meanwhile, doctors would
perform surgery without washing their hands and while wearing a coat soiled with another

patient's blood. Many of them purposely wore dirty gowns and coats as a sign of their
experience! With conditions like these, it's no wonder so many patients succumbed to
infection after their surgeries.
In the 1860s, a surgeon by the name of Joseph Lister permanently changed the
medical world for the better. Drawing from the work of Louis Pasteur, Lister realized that
infection could occur when microorganisms were present. In order to prevent harmful, or
fatal, infections, Lister began sterilizing medical tools with a carbolic acid mixture. He also
instructed other surgeons to wash their hands, wear gloves, and disinfect the patient's skin
prior to surgery. Lister realized that the most effective way of preventing infection was to
eliminate microorganisms before they ever had a chance to enter the patient's body.
After doctors began introducing these antiseptic methods into their surgeries, the
survival rate in patients undergoing surgery dramatically rose. While the methods for
disinfection have changed, Joseph Lister is still considered to be the father of modern
surgery, and his discoveries saved countless lives over the years.
51. What is the main idea of the passage?

53. Based on the passage, which of the following statements about disinfection is TRUE?
A. None of Joseph Lister's patients died as a result of infection after he implemented
sterilization procedures.
B. Operating rooms should be aired – out before surgeries.
C. Carbolic acid continues to be used for disinfecting medical tools.
D. The best way to prevent infection is by removing germs before they can enter a patient's
body.
54. What can be inferred from the following sentence from the second paragraph?
"With conditions like these, it's no wonder so many patients succumbed to infection
after their surgeries."
A. The habits of medical professionals prior to the mid – nineteenth century were unsanitary.
B. Allowing outside air into a hospital was making patients ill.
C. Wearing soiled clothing always caused infections.
D. Most surgeons were treating their patients very poorly prior to Lister's discoveries.
55. What is the author's primary purpose in writing this passage?
A. To explain how to properly prevent the spread of infection.
B. To inform the reader about how certain medical practices began and evolved into today's
modern standards.
C. To argue that Joseph Lister was the most important figure in medical history.

D. To persuade the reader to take precautions, like hand - washing, against microorganisms.

B. Reading the following passage then check TRUE or FALSE.
One hundred and fifty years ago, nurses were unpaid, untrained, and unpopular, but
then Florence Nightingale made nursing into a profession. The methods she introduced in the

1850s were copied all over the world, and now nursing is a career with a three - or four
training, qualifications, grades, unions, and pensions
In Britain, every nurse is on a grade. The grade depends on experience and skills, and
each grade has different responsibilities and pay. On the bottom grades are unqualified
auxiliary nurses who do the routine work on hospital wards. On the top grades are nursing
officers, who are usually administrators.
Auxiliary nurses are on the bottom grades, but student nurses get the lowest pay.
However, students don't stay at the bottom of the pay scale forever. When they qualify, they
start working on a middle grade. As they get experience, they can get promotion and move up
the ranks to become staff nurse, then sister (charge nurse if a man), and perhaps eventually
nursing officer.
Many nurses work shifts, and often they work overtime to earn more money. After
basic training, many nurses choose to do further study and become specialists. Nurses can
specialize in many different fields there are triage nurses working in Casualty. and psychiatric
nurses who treat the mentally ill. There are health visitors who visit patients in their own
homes, practice nurses working in GPs' surgeries, and midwives who deliver babies.
Many of them say they do not get enough pay and respect for the work they do. They
say that the work is physically and mentally hard, that they work long hours and get very
tired. But they also say that there are many great rewards which have nothing to do with
money.
56. Nursing officers often work in administration.
A. False.
B. True.
57. Student nurses cannot become staff nurses although they qualify and get experience.
A. False.
B. True.
58. Nurses can specialize in many fields such as casualty, health visitors, practice nurses
working in GPs' surgeries but they cannot specialize in mental health nursing
A. True.
B. False.

59. There are four grades that were described and related to different levels of nurses.
A. True.
B. False.
60. Many nurses say that the job is rewarding, but the pay is high.
A. True.
B. False.
