Conceming the four skills involved in the IELTS test, writing is considered


the most challenging for most students at the Faculty of Intemational
Education, University of Transport and commrmication. When being tested
those students tend to replicate the vast majority ofthe original texts fiom the
question or use the words repeatedly. They are confident with their
paraphrasing skills due to the lack of instructions and self-practicing. The
author conducted a survey to identi$ the difficulties students encountercd
when paraphrasing when writing IELTS essay tasks, especially with the use
of online paraphmsing tools, to improve the student's achievement and
enjoyment in paraphrasing in writing ask. To achieve writing competency,
long-term preparation is necessary for students to be equipped with sufficient
skills and lexical resources for every writing task. The article also suggests
several effective and precise wod phrase and senterrce-based paraphmsing
measues, and emphasizes the effective exploitation of online paraphrasing
lools to improve the students' English wfiting competency in general and
paraphrasing capacity in paticular, promoting their sellstudy capacity and
interest in leaming.
