- The temple of literature is one of Viet Nam’s most significant historic sites that was
recognised by UNESCO
The full name of this complex is Văn Miếu – Quốc tử Giám . Văn Miếu is the Temple of
Literature and Quốc Tử Giám is the Imperial Academy
The temple literature was built in 1070
The temple was dedicated to Confucius and other sages and scholars
In 1076 , Vietnam’s first university – Quốc Tử Giám was established that trained thousands
of talent for the country for more than 700 years

- The complex is divided into three main areas :

courtyards which are surrounded by a brick wall
This the four-pillar gate it is the main gate of the temple and literature

literature is divided into 5 different layers of space . In the first layer of space,
there are 3 paths which lead to the Grate Middle Gate with 2 side gates .
Accomplished Virtue Gate and Attained Talent Gate
- The second courtyard runs from the great middle gate to the Khue Van pavalion
The three paths continue leading to the next two side gates which are the
Magnificence of Letters Gate and the Crystallzation of Letters Gate

The second courtyard contains the Khue Van pavilion that is a unique architectural
word built in 1805 and it is a symbol of Hanoi
- In the third courtyard there is the Well of Heavenly Clarity
On the sides of the well are doctors’ stelae
The doctors’ stelae are a valuable historical resource for the study of cultrre ,


education and sculpture in Vietnam ,82 stelae now remain
They depict the names and birth places of 1307 graduates of 82 royal exams
- Passing through the glorious success gate , we enter the fourth courtyard
In the centre of the fourth courtyard is the House of Ceremonies
The next building is where Confucius and his four excellent disciples are
worshipped
As you can see , there are two pairs of cranes on the backs of turtles


According to an old tale , turtles and cranes are very close friends , when floods
happen , the turtle can help the crane to get to a dry place . Conversely, when

- In 1076, Emperor Ly Nhan Tong ordered the construction of an imperial academy
as a fifth courtyard . In 1946, the courtyard was destroyed by the French . In 1946,

temple in 1070 . King Lý Nhân Tông , who founded the Imperial Academy and King
Lê Thánh Tông , who ordered the erection of doctor’s steale in 1484
