Use the ray box with the rectangular opening for parallel light, a parallel light
beam is emitted.
When diaphragm with one, two or three slits are applied,the same number of
thin light beams, parallel to one another, are generated. These are called light
rays.
Turn around the ray box to produce divergent light, a divergent light beam is
emitted.
Insert diaphragm with three slits, divergent rays of light are created.

Set up the two ray box and the object for shadowing hemisphere, representing
the earth, according to the figure.
In position 1 the moon (object for shadowinng, cylinder) creates a umbra and
penumbra areas.
In position 2 the moon enters the earth's penumbra area. The appearance of its
shadow changes while there is practically no change in light intensity on the
moon's surface as observed from the earth.
In position 3 the moon is found entirely in the earth's umbra. There is a total
lunar eclipse.

In position 4 only a part of the moon is touched by the earth's umbra. This is
termed a partial lunar eclipse.
Since the orbits of the moon and earth lie at an angle of approximately 5° to
each other, the earth's conic umbra does not fall on the moon during every
orbit. The orbits of the earth and moon intersect at two nodes.
A lunar eclipse takes place only when sun, earth and moon and one of the
nodes are aligned.

A solar eclipse is observed when the moon's shadow falls on the earth's
surface. From the umbra area, always covering only a small part of the earth's
surface, a total solar eclipse is observed, while a partial solar eclipse is
observed in the penumbra area.
Move the objec for shadowing hemisphere representing the earth so that the tip
of the umbra does not quite fall on the surface.
From the penumbra area a partial solar eclipse can be observed. This appears
ring-shaped when the observation area and the centers of the sun and the
moon are all approximately aligned.
