A. Aims:
By the end of the lesson, student will be able to:
_ understand how to use the Infinitive & Bare Infinitive correctly & appropriately
_ know how to do the exercises accurately & quickly
B. Approach & Teaching aids:
_ Grammar translation method
+ Teacher presents the forms & examples as well as explanation in the hand – outs.
+ Students listen, follow in the hand – outs and take notes. Then they do the exercises in pairs
and write down after the teacher’s feedback.
_ Exercise book, hand –outs, blackboard, chalk.
C. Content:
I. Infinitive:
1. The purpose or intention of an action:
Ex: I learn English to get a well – paid job.
2. Subject of a sentence:
Ex: To speak English fluently is difficult.
_ It’s difficult to speak English fluently.
3. Subject complement:
The important thing is to learn hard.
4. Object of a verb: (see in the handout)
Ex: My family decided to stay at home last weekend.
5. Object of an adjective: (see in the handout)
Ex: I’m glad to see you again.
6. Object complement: (see in the handout)
Ex: She advised me to study hard.
7. Replacing a relative clause:


Ex: I have a lot of work to do( Which I have to do).
8. After Wh_ words (not Why):
Ex: I don’t know how to use a computer.
9. After indefinite pronouns: (someone, everybody, something, etc.)
Ex: I need someone to help me.
10. Some expressions:
a. …too + adj + (for O) + to infinitive.
Ex: This tea is too hot for me to drink
b. …adj + enough + (for O) + to infinitive.
Ex: My sister is old enough to get married.
II. Bare infinitive:
1. After modal verbs( may, can, must, should, etc.)
Ex: I must go home
2. After some expressions (had better, would rather, used to)
Ex: You’d better stay at home.


3. After the objects of some verbs: (see in the handout)
Ex: The film makes me cry.
4. After the objects of some perceptive verbs (see, smell, watch, feel, hear, etc.)
Ex: I saw her cross the street. (# I saw her crossing the street.)
