Education is another area of social life in which information technology is changing the way we
communicate. Today's college students may not simply sit in a lecture or a library to learn about their
field. Through their computers and the wonders of virtual reality they can participate in lifelike
simulated experiences. Consider the following scenario of the future of education made possible through
developments in information technology.
For children over the age of 10, daily attendance at schools is not compulsory. Some of the older
children attend school only once or twice weekly to get tutorial support or instruction from a teacher.
For the most part, pupils are encouraged to work online from home. Students should complete a
minimum number of study hour per year; however, they may make up these hours by studying at home
at times that suit their family schedule. They can log on early or late in the day and even join live classes
in other countries. In order to ensure that each student is learning adequately, computer software will

automatically monitor the number hours a week each student studies on line as well as that student's
learning materials and assessment activities. Reports will be available for parents and teachers. The
software can then identify the best learning activities and conditions for each individual student and
generate similar activities. It can be also identify areas of week achievement and produce special
programs adjusted to the students' needs.

C. Identify weaknesses of the students D. Monitor the time the students learn
45. What is NOT MENTIONED as a benefit of information technology to the students?

Man is a land animal, but he also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the
needs of man. The sea has provided man with food and convenient way to travel to many parts of the
world. Today, nearly two thirds of the world’s population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive.
Resources on land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many
man’s needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology is impressive. Oil and
gas explorations have been carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the
ocean floor are ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and
shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm
temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and
waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of
strong, new material has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve.
Experts believe that by the year 2000 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food,
minerals, and energy source of the sea will be largely solved.

Fiction is the writing of a story or text that is not true: It can be written in the form of either poetry
or prose. Poetry is a style of writing in which short lines form verses. Often, words at the end of these
lines rhyme, like “bed” and “red”. We call a group of verses about one subject a “poem”. Prose writing
does not have verses, nor does it rhyme. It uses sentences and paragraphs. Prose is used in magazine
articles, newspaper stories, short stories, and books.
Prose fiction has existed since ancient times, but most early fiction was actually written as poetry.
Scholars disagree about the date of the first prose fiction book, or novel. Some scholars classify fictional
stories from ancient Greece and Rome as the early novels in Asia as early as the 6
th
century. These early
novels were mostly short adventure stories about fictional characters.

In Europe, prose fiction began to seriously challenge poetry in the 16
th
century. A Spanish author,
Cervantes, wrote Europe

s first prose novel in the early 1600s. However, longer novels, like Cervantes

s
Don Quixote, did not become very popular until the 1700s. By that time, there were more printing
presses, and more people knew how to read. In addition, more people had money to buy these books.
Today, the vast majority of fiction is written in prose rather than in poetry. Prose: v n xuôi; verse: thă ơ

One of the most urgent environmental problems in the world today is the shortage of clean water.
Having clean drinking water is a basic human right. But acid rain, industrial pollution and garbage have
made many sources of water undrinkable. Lakes, reservoirs and even entire seas have become vast pools
of poison. Lake Baikal in Russia is one of the largest lakes in the world. It contains a rich variety of
animals and plants, including 1,300 rare species that do not exist anywhere else in the world. But they
are being destroyed by the massive volumes of industrial wastes which pour into the lake every day.
Even where law existed, the government did not have the power to enforce them. Most industries simply
ignores the regulations. The Mediterranean Sea occupies 1% of the world’s water surface. But it is the
dumping ground for 50% of all marine pollution. Almost 16 countries regularly throw industrial wastes
a few miles off shore.
Water is free to everyone. A few years ago people thought that the supply of clean water in the
world was limitless. Today, many water supplies have been ruined by pollution and sewage. Clean water
is now scarce, and we are at last beginning to respect this precious source. We should do something

now.

your body on your feet, it’s a good form of exercise for people with painful feet or backs. However, with
all forms of exercise it’s important to start slowly and build up gently. Doing too much too quickly can
damage muscles that aren’t used to working. If you have any doubts about taking up cycling for health
reasons, talk to your doctor and ask his/her advice. [all-round: general, gently: softly]
Ideally you should be cycling at least two or three times a week. For the exercise to be doing you
good, you should get a little out of breath. Don’t worry that if you begin to lose your breath, it could be

breath shows that the exercise is having the right effect. However, if you find you are in pain then you
should stop and take a rest. [good (adverb): well (US)]
