PART 1: INTRODUCTION
1.1. RATIONALE FOR THE STUDY
In recent years, people have witnessed dramatic changes in the media,
one of the leading services today is the Internet. It is an indispensable means of
humanity, a service "fast, compact, convenient", not only that, the Internet has
been penetrating almost every field from economics, politics, culture, society
and all human activities belonging to all classes of society, especially students'
learning.
The benefits that the Internet brings to students is great: It helps them to
have extensive insights in all fields, update information in the fastest way, be
convenient in the learning process and bring results high.
The Internet is a huge source of information in which all knowledge in all
fields is available to help students if they know how to choose and receive
information. It is also a factor that promotes the exchange of learning
information and social knowledge.
In addition, the Internet also helps relieve stress and stress in studying,
has more joy, confidence in life can meet and talk to relatives, friends from far
away, make friends. With many people not only in the country but also

extending around the world, creating relationships that give these people more
opportunities to work after graduation.
Nowadays, In the context of globalization with the remarkable
development of science and technology, many communication technology
services are born to meet the needs of people. One of the current leading means
of mass communication is the Internet. The strong development of the internet
system has contributed to the rapid integration of our Vietnamese people into the
world and become " International citizens are "equal on social networks.
According to the Vietnam Internet Network Information Center (VNNIC),
our country is proud to have an internet penetration rate of 35.6% as of

1

November 2012. The number of internet users in our country has increased
significantly in the past 10 years from 2.1 million in 2003 to 31.1 million by the
end of 2012. According to a report from We Are social, as of March 2015, there
are 41 million internet users Equivalent to 41% of the population. Today, with
the help of the Internet, the world of information and communications is now on
the screen of a computer or a smartphone. The Internet has crept into every lane.
the niche of human life, strongly impacting on human life using many different
aspects, has become indispensable in social, economic, and security
development. In the latest report of marketers shows that in Vietnam the number
of online visitors is between 15 and 24 years old. How is Internet use related to
today's young people? Especially students of a particular social population
group, are young intellectuals in society, they are the most active and sensitive
to the development of technology as well as the Internet. Internet to study for
English language students at Vietnam National University Of Agriculture is also
necessary to build students a good study path. So the research topic is: "The
current status of using the internet in the learning of English majored students at

Vietnam National University Of Agriculture ".

PART 2: DEVELOPMENT
Chapter 1: LITERATURE REVIEW
1.1 REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS STUDIES (at home/abroad)
1.1.1. Review of previous studies in Viet Nam
Tran Phuong Thuy (2010), Nghiên cứu hành vi sử dụng mạng internet của
thanh thiếu niên Hà Nội. The thesis shows the frequency of internet use by
Hanoi youth. Those who use the internet many times/day account for the highest
rate of 35.9%, those who use the internet once a day account for 31.4%. This
shows that young people use the internet with quite a high intensity. In which,
young people online the most at 20:00 a.m -24 hours, 33.5% and around 14:00
a.m, 21.9%. The frequency and time spent online by young people depend a lot
on the time spent at home and school. College students are more independent in
life and study, so the amount of internet access is significantly more than that of
students. With the development of technology with various types of
entertainment, news ... has attracted great attention of young people in accessing
the internet, so in recent years the number of young people accessing it regularly
has increased up vigorously. Activities of young people when accessing the
internet, Teens, most of them, know the Internet as a source of information and
entertainment. They use the Internet more as a means of entertainment to find
information. The majority (68.7%) use the Internet to chat and 61.4% use an
Internet-connected computer to play online video games and 100% of internet
users questioned using the internet for communication. contact with others (chat
and email). Students are more interested in online news and exploiting internet
resources than students because they have more knowledge or knowledge, 35%
of people participate in forums, blogging, and major social networks in Vietnam.
Nguyen Quy Thanh (2018), Mối quan hệ của việc sử dụng internet và
hoạt động học tập của sinh viên. The study conducted a survey of 640 students

5

from 10 universities, of which 5 are in Hanoi and 5 in Ho Chi Minh City. The
main results of this study are as follows.
The topic demonstrates that there are many different factors related to
students' learning in terms of active and positive learning behavior. Students
with high academic scores frequently pay attention in class, do less personal
work such as reading stories and newspapers during class, and "work harder" to
go to the library to read documents. The fact that students in the North visit the
library at a much higher rate than students in the South is noteworthy. In terms
of gender, female students are more likely than male students to communicate
with their classmates about the lecture in class. However, when we examined the
relationship between Internet use and students' active learning behaviors, we
discovered that the Internet is only positively related to the behavior of going to
the library to read documents, those who go up, the more they access the
library, the more they care.
Concerning the types of anti-academic behavior displayed by students
(private conversation, private work, sleeping, playing cards during class time,
etc.), the topic demonstrates that the aforementioned behaviors are quite
common. The higher the rate of late attendance and absenteeism, the more
students who take the above courses and have a high spending level. Female
students tend to talk privately during class more than boys; however, men have
nearly twice the rate of frequent conversation as women.Urban students work
more off-time than rural students, and students in the North sleep, play cards, or
play chess in class at a higher rate than students in the South. Internet access is
also linked to non-academic behaviors in a variety of ways. The paradox is that
the more frequently one uses the Internet, the lower the dropout rate.Students
who use the Internet every day in their spare time make up the majority, but
those who never use it violate the law more frequently.People who use the
Internet for learning, in particular, are less likely to behave differently at this

6

time than those who do not use the Internet for learning.Sleeping, chess, or card
games during school hours were also linked to internet access frequency. People
who use the internet on a daily basis commit the most violations, but with
moderate use, this rate is lower than for those who do not use the Internet at all.
The study found that regional and gender factors are most related to
students'

passive

learning

behaviors.

Surprisingly,

students'

academic

performance and years of study were not related to their level of academic
passivity. If people still believe that students in the aforementioned courses, or
those with good and excellent academic performance, will be more active and
proactive in the learning process both in class and at home, this study does not
support that belief.Internet access is also linked to students' passive learning
behaviors. Those who use the Internet frequently have a higher rate of speaking
and discussing in class. Students who use the Internet for communication, on the
other hand, are less likely to speak up.Students who spent a lot of time and

frequency accessing the Internet had a lower rate of passivity (sitting quietly
listening to lectures), but students who spent a lot of time and frequency
accessing the Internet had a lower rate of actively asking lecturers more about
the subject outside of class time. The Internet can be said to have
multidimensional relationships in many forms of passive learning behavior of
students today.
Dang Thi Nga (2013), Nhu cầu sử dụng mạng xã hội của sinh viên Cao
đẳng Sư phạm Thái Bình, describes the general situation about the use of social
networks by students. Thai Binh College of Education. At the same time,
research shows that social media plays a certain role as well as has a great
influence on students' living and learning activities. The social networks that
students most often use are Facebook, Zingme, Youtube with diversified access
purposes such as entertainment, study, and job search. Besides, students are less
likely to acquire knowledge about social networks, this is the reason that they do

7

not know how to maximize the benefits from social networks and minimize the
harmful effects of social networks. it. With the study of the student's need to use
social networks, the author concludes: the demand for using social networks of
Thai Binh College students is very high and there is a difference between the
level and the expression present usage needs among study groups.
Conclusion
Based on the findings, it is clear that the Internet is an effective tool for
assisting students in their teaching-learning process. However, while it has
changed the way students learn, the magnitude of this effect is not as large as
expected. It is necessary to popularize and create conditions for students to have
access to the Internet for the purpose of learning. However, it must be
accompanied by a fundamental shift in the educational process. Because

otherwise, students do not need to be more active, they do not require more
information from the Internet, and they continue to achieve high results. This
unreasonable point must be addressed synchronously by lecturers, students, and
educational administrators.
1.1.2 Review of the previous studies abroad
It can be said that research on the Internet in general and Internet usage, in
particular, has been mentioned by many researchers in many fields in many
topics. Looking at the history of the formation and development of the Internet
to see the dedication of researchers, IT engineers, programmers ... who have
continuously produced high-quality communication products, can be applied in
many fields. Like many fields in social life, education always emphasizes the
achievements achieved by network technology and constantly applies it in
teaching and learning processes, in educational management, in testing and
evaluation, etc. The most advanced education in the world such as the United
States, France, the Netherlands. Sweden, Japan, Singapore, etc. all focus on the
Internet system, considering it as an effective and effective tool contributing

8

significantly to the quality of education. Therefore, a lot of research on the
Internet came into being, not only the research and development of application
software but also a lot of research towards the goal: to fully exploit the utilities
of the Internet, at the same time discover out the negative effects of the Internet,
adjust those influences to improve the quality of education and training.
Weiss (1998), president of the American College System Science
Council, based on her research, asked the University of California faculty to
discuss linking disciplines. study together to enable students to study a training
program that is offered by many schools or faculties in one school.
Connecting courses is important, Weiss said, “we are in an era where

every university is part of a larger professional community - the global expertise
village” .Weiss, 1998). Information technology can help Universities do this. In
her research, Ms. Weiss argued that with the help of information technology,
courses should be designed according to the following steps: 1) determine the
content of multiple courses that schools or institutions training in the same
school thinks convertible; 2) design that curriculum in a flexible direction; 3)
discuss how to convey the curriculum of those courses towards using the
applications of information technology in conveying that can replace the
traditional way of learning (only in class with teachers and games).
Information technology, specifically the Internet, was first created for
military and industrial purposes and then applied to education. However, the
application of information technology to the education field requires a different
path. To use it effectively, teachers may have to re-create and persuade its
purpose to define ontology, standardize content, skills, and satisfy chapter
elements. overall learning process. Or at least, educators must also use and
measure the possible outcomes of each standard. “Information technology is
used to serve human purposes, but information technology overload is
something that we must choose carefully in an application so that we do not

9

have to sacrifice. what belongs to the 'person' in it (Hanseth, Monteiro, &
Hatling).
Petter Bae Bradtzaeg (2012), Social Networking Sites: Their Users and
Social Implications- A Longitudinal Study surveyed Norwegian online users
with a sample of 2,000 people aged 15 to 75 years old. The study concluded that
there is a significant difference in social capital between the non-social group
and the group that does on three aspects: face-to-face communication, number of
acquaintances, and bridging capital.

1.2. REVIEW OF THEORETICAL BACKGROUND
1.2.1. Internet definition
1.2.1.1. Definition
The Internet is a global system of connected computer networks.
Computers and computer networks exchange information using TCP / IP
(Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) to communicate
with each other. Computers connected by telecommunications networks and the
Internet can be used to send and receive electronic mail (email), transmit files,
and access information on the World Wide Web (WWW).
The Internet is a worldwide, publicly accessible information system made
up of numerous interconnected computer networks. This system will send data
in a packet-switching fashion using a standardized internet protocol (IP
protocol). This system consists of thousands of small computer networks run by
businesses, research institutions, and universities, as well as individual users.
The Internet is regarded as a "giant network," serving as a link between
millions of smaller computer networks around the world. These networks are
linked together via terrestrial cables, underground cables, satellite links, and so
on.

10

1.2.1.2. Origins of the Internet.
The Internet was created in 1969 by the US government's Advanced
Research Project Agency (ARPA) under the name ARPANet. The initial goal
was to build a network that would allow university computer users to connect
and communicate with one another. Furthermore, it aids in ensuring that
operations continue despite being attacked by military operations or natural
disasters.
In 1974, the term "Internet" first appeared. The network was still known

as ARPANET at the time. ARPANET was regarded as the Internet's backbone
network in 1980. TCP/IP protocol became an official standard for the US
military in 1983, and all computers connected to ARPANET must use this new
standard. ARPANET was divided into two parts in 1984: the first, still known as
ARPANET, is devoted to research and development; the second, known as
MILNET, is a network for military purposes.
The year 1980 marked an important turning point in the history of the
Internet when the US National Science Foundation NSF established NSFNET, a
network to connect major computer centers. NSFNET had shrunk back to a
research network by 1995, while the Internet continued to grow.
With such open connectivity, the Internet has grown to become the
world's largest network, a network of networks, with applications in all fields of
commerce, politics, military, research, education, and culture. Since then,
Internet services have been constantly evolving, ushering in a new era for
humanity: the era of Internet e-commerce.
Tim Berners Lee at the European Center for Atomic Research (CERN)
invented the World Wide Web (WWW) in 1991, based on Ted Nelson's 1985
idea of hypertext. The World Wide Web, also known as the Web or WWW for
short, is a global network that can be accessed (read and written) by anyone
using computers connected to the Internet. The term is frequently misunderstood

11

as a synonym for the term Internet. However, the Web is merely one of the
services provided by the Internet, such as an email service.
A hypertext system stores documents on the World Wide Web. To view
the hypertext, the user must use a program known as a web browser. This
program will receive information (documents) in the address box (address)
requested by the user (the information in the address box is known as domain

name), and then it will automatically send information to the server (web server)
and display it on the computer screen of the viewer. Users can use this process
to search for information on web pages.
Major internet milestones:
1991: Web Father, Tim Berners-Lee invents the World Wide Web
(www).
1995: Amazon is founded by Jeff Bezos. Until now, Amazon is still
considered as one of the successful and large-scale e-commerce companies.
1996: Yahoo! Listed on the stock exchange. Yahoo is famous for its
search, contacts, digital content, email and instant messaging services (Instant
Messenger).
1997: MP3.com was founded. The MP3 standard has made music and
audio files easy to be transmitted over the internet. Paving the way for internet
entertainment technology
1998: Google is founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin. Although
internet search technology has been developed by many research companies
before, it is Google's search product that is what internet users really expect. To
this day, Google's search engine is still the most used search engine. The birth of
Google has helped internet users to exploit information more conveniently, and
help websites have more opportunities to reach internet users.
1999: Peter Merholz introduces the concept of "blog". A canonical
reading of the phrase Web log. From here it is easier to make a website, and

12

users can use the internet as a place to write a diary. Later, Blogs are no longer
simply personal diaries on the internet, but also a place to share knowledge,
experiences, personal views... and become an important tool of social media.
2000: Google AdWords, an advertising service on Google, was born.

Advertising on Google Adwords then charged according to CPM (the number of
times the ad appeared).
2002: Google AdWords changes billing to PPC (Pay per click). Later, this
is one of the most popular forms of advertising by marketers
2003: eBay topples Amazon as the most visited UK web site.
2006: Google acquires YouTube for $1.6 billion. Opening up a new era of
movie watching and movie sharing over the internet.
2006: Facebook officially opened to registered users. The concept of
social network becomes more familiar to internet users. Social media began to
flourish. The role of internet users in communication is appreciated. The power
of internet users also increased
2007: Iphone was born, opening a new chapter of smart phone, from here
the connection of mobile communication and internet is even closer.
2008: The world has 1.4 billion internet users
2011: The world has more than 2 billion internet users.
With the current strong development, the internet has become a public
facility that allows hundreds of millions of people around the world to access at
the same time. When using the web you can access a lot of different
information. Depending on the browser you use, the appearance of the website is
also different. In new browser versions, it will be possible to display more "extra
components" such as animations, sounds, etc.

13

1.2.2. Uses of the Internet
1.2.2.1. Using the Internet in every day life
Make money from the Internet
One of the great benefits of the Internet is that students can make money
through blogging. This must be a great source of income and offers a unique

writing experience that improves professional skills.
Not stopping there, users can also make money from applications on the
Internet. Or businesses can sell products on the Internet, from a website,
businesses can freely put their products on it and customers will come. From
there, the company or business can also have many more sources of income.
Make life easier
If asked about the role of the Internet, no one can't help but praise and
wish humanity in general (including all countries and territories, all races and
civilizations...) to facilitate its continuation. develop. The Internet has made the
world less concave in terms of development level, especially intellectual level.
Therefore, there is almost no country in the world that does not accept the
internet.
Many economic and social fields use the Internet such as education,
health care, commerce, diplomacy, etc. Some people even claim that their lives
will be meaningless without the Internet. We can see that the Internet has been
dominating almost every field, from doctors, engineers, teachers to office
workers. The Internet has really helped a lot in the work of the majority of those
individuals.
Surely everyone can see that since the Internet, everyone's life has
gradually become easier than ever. If before, you wanted to buy a movie ticket,
you had to run to the ticket counter, now you can completely do it when using
the Internet. In addition, you can also pay electricity and water bills, transfer
money, pay for services from the Internet.

14

Connect with friends
The Internet helps you connect with friends and relatives through social
networks such as: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google. You can contact and

communicate with people around the world and build good relationships. . This
is the benefit of social networks.
One of the benefits that cannot be ignored is connecting people from the
Internet. People can chat together, exchange information and experiences on
forums, share information and feelings on blogs. Since then, the distance is
gradually narrowed, people become closer and can build stronger relationships.
Open up the world of entertainment
The Internet has become a useful entertainment medium for everyone in
today's life. On the Internet, there are countless forms of entertainment such as:
Playing games, chatting through forums, social networks, listening to music,
watching movies, etc. From there, it helps people to relax after working days.
work, study stress and fatigue.
1.2.2.2. Using the Internet in learning
Internet – effective search engine
The Internet is seen as a versatile and convenient dictionary. You can
search for anything you wonder and it will be answered in a heartbeat. If you
know how to use the Internet properly, it is a useful tool to help young people
cultivate and accumulate knowledge very effectively.
You do not need to spend too much time searching for the necessary
documents, supporting learning in thick books that are not sure of the right
