It has been a long time since we last wrote to
each other. How are you? I am still well. In
your last letter, you asked me about my
interesting neighbor. Now, I’m writing to
tell you about him. His name is Minh. He is
40 years old. He got married 5 years ago. He
had a son. He lives next to my house. He
and I grew up together and we had a very
happy childhood. He graduated from Ntional
University. Now he works as a sales
manager for a American company in Hanoi.
He is handsome and tall. He is intelligent,
friendly and dynamic. He always helps other
people when they need him. Whenever he
has free time, he comes to my house. My
family loves him very much. I think that he
is not only my good neighbor but also my
best friend. We had lived together for 30
years and shared everything. I hope that we
will be best friends forever.

Topic 2: A memorable birthday
celebration

your last letter, you asked me about my
memorable birthday celebration. Now, I’m

writing to tell you about it. I think that the
most memorable celebration I have ever had
was my 30th birthday. There were lots of
surprising things for me on that day which I
cannot for it. I held a small party to celebrate
my birthday in a restaurant. My family and
some of my close friends attended the party.
When we were happy to talk and eat
together, one person came to me and said
“You have a gift from your cousin”. I
opened the gift and felt very surprised with
it. It was a very special gift for me. My
cousin moved to London 15 years ago and
he never came back to Viet Nam. I think he
won’t have any contact with me anymore. I
think my 30th birthday celebration will be
the most memorable one for me and my
family.

Topic 3: Difficulties at work

In your last letter, you asked me about my
current job and the difficulties facing me at
work. Now, I’m writing to tell you about
them. You know that I work as aan
accountant in a bank in Ha Noi. I am very
busy with my work but my income is not

very high. We normally work 10 or 12 hours
a day and sometimes we even work at the
weekends. At the moment, the economic
situation of the country is not good, so we
have to work under a lot of pressure. The
working environment is very strict and
uncomfortable. We work competitively. If
we don’t reach the monthly target, we can
be laid off from the bank. In the office, my
colleagues are not very friendly and helpful.
They do their own work but do not help or
support others. I am lookinf for a new job
though I know it is not easy nowadays.


Topic 4: Vietnamese traditional festival

In your last letter, you asked me about
Vietnamese traditional festivals. Now, I’m
writing to tell you about one of them. Viet
Nam has many traditional festivals every
year. But the Lunar New Year is probably
the most impressive with me and other
oversea people. Tet holiday is the biggest
annual celebration of Viet Nam in the first
days of Lunar New Year. During these days,
people welcome a new coming year with
good health, luck and success. Tet holiday is

very special for Vietnamese families to
reunite and celebrate together. On Tet
holiday, all family members clean and
redecorate their house together. Then they
buy food, drink, peach flower and a
kumquat tree. Children are the most eager
when their parents buy them new clothes or
give them some lucky money. The special
and traditional food on Tet holiday is Trung
cake, pickle onion and frozen meat. On the
first days of New year, people often go to
visit their neighbors or relatives. I think that
everyone enjoys warm and cosy atmosphere
on Tet holiday when all the family members
gather.

Topic 5: Traffic problems in Ha Noi

In your last letter, you asked me about
traffic problems in our city, Ha Noi. Now,
I’m writing to tell you about them. I have
live in Hanoi for nearly 20 years and I
realize that there are many serious traffic
problems occurring there every day. Traffic
jams in rush hours now is a very common
sign in Ha Noi. People have to suffer from it
every day when they travel in the roads.
There are many kinds of vehicles going on

the roads such as: cars, buses, motorbikes,
bikes and trucks, therefore, the streets are
very crowded, noisy and dusty. It is
dangerous to travel in Hanoi city because
many people, especially, the young, drive
very carelessly, they do not pay attention to
the traffic lights. They usually overpass the
red lights, so you should be careful when
traveling there. Many foreigners coming to
visit Viet Nam complains about traffic
problems, they find it difficult to cross the
roads. I think that the government should
raise people’s awareness about traffic
regulations.

Topic 6: Your hometown or village

In your last letter, you asked me about my
hometown. Now, I’m writing to tell you
about it. I was born in Bac Ninh which is
famous for many pagodas. If you have a
chance to visit my hometown, you can visit
lots of ancient churches, pagodas, and
unique architecture. Bac Ninh people are
very proud of beautiful pagodas. It is also
famous for festival such as Lim festival
which happens every year with many
traditional values. My hometown is

surrounded by many paddy-fields and rivers.
I like watching large and green rice fields.
They make me feel relaxed and peaceful.
People in my hometown are very simple,
friendly and sociable. They live closely to
each other so they are helpful. Now I live in
Ha Noi but I often come back to my
hometown at the weekends. West or East,
Home is the best.


Topic 7: Benefits of doing sports

In your last letter, you asked me about the
benefits of doing sports. Now, I’m writing to
tell you about some of them. In my opinion,
each of us should choose a sport to do
because playing sports brings us a lot of
benefits. Firstly, You will have a healthy life
or positive attitudes towards your life. If you
play sports regularly, you will become fitter,
more active and flexible. In other words, it
helps you to increase your resistance to
illness. Secondly, when playing sports with
other people, you can have more chance to
communicate with them. You will feel
relaxed and free from your stress. Moreover,
doing sports can also give people endurance,

quick reaction and teach them how to
improve team spirit work in groups. When
doing a sport, you should balance your time,
you should not practice too much and too
hard to avoid its disadvantages. In short, it is
true that playing sports is very useful for
everyone.

Topic 8: Ways of learning English

In your last letter, you asked me about my
ways of learning English. Now, I’m writing
to tell you about some of them. English is
now considered as an important and widely
spoken language in the world. Therefore,
people should select their own ways to
improve their English day by day. For me, I
have some interesting ways. I think that we
should learn English regularly rather than
learn in a given time. I often spend 2 hour a
day studying grammar, vocabulary and other
skills. I learn listening skill by listening to
English songs, watching films in English
and do some listening exercises. For
speaking, I try to speak English with my
classmates as much as possible and
sometimes I talk to the native speakers. I
often make simple sentences and then write

a short paragraph and I ask my teacher to
correct it for me. Sometimes I write emails
in English or chat with foreigners to
improve my writing skill. I like reading so I
normally read newspapers or funny stories
in English to develop my reading skill. I
think that these ways of learning English
have helped me a lot in my studying.

Topic 9: Advantages and disadvantages of
the internet

advantages and disadvantages of the
internet. Now, I’m writing to tell you about
them. Nowadays, the Internet is a global
information system and it is popular
everywhere in the world. Using internet
brings people both advantages and
disadvantages. First, in terms of advantages,
the internet is a big store of information so
you can find any kind of information you
need on the internet. You can also share
information with other people around the
world very quickly. There are many services
that you can use on the internet. For
example, you can buy tickets, transact with

the bank, watch movies, make hotel
reservation…..on the internet. Beside some
advantages,
there
are
also
some
disadvantages. On the internet, there are
many black websites which are not good for
children. If the children use the internet too
much, it will affect their health and mental
life. And people will waste their time
playing games on line, they do not
concentrate on their studying and working.
In short, people should know how to take
advantages of using the internet and
eliminate the disadvantages.

In your last letter, you asked me about my
ways of relaxing. Now, I’m writing to tell
you about some of them. In modern society,
people are very busy and work under lots of
pressure. Therefore, it is necessary to find
ways to relax. For me, whenever I feel tired
of my job or get stressed, I often go out with

my close friends or colleagues. We meet in
the coffee shop, bar, restaurant or sometimes
we go shopping together. We can eat
delicious food and talk and share everything
with each other. We often tell jokes and
laugh happily so we forget about stress
when we come back home. Another way to
relax is to play sports such as jogging,
swimming, playing tennis… When I play
sport, it is good for my health. I feel stronger
and have new energy for my work in the
next day. Playing sports also helps me have
positive attitude towards life. I think that
each person should choose his own ways to
relax when he lives in the modern and busy
society.

Hello teacher, nice to meet you. Allow

me to introduce myself. My name is Vu
Thanh Tam but you can call me Tam. I am
32 years old. I was born and grew up in Bac
Giang. I am a public servant and I have done
this job for 10 years now. I am married
woman with a lovely 9 year old daughter.
Fortunately, I work near my house so my
park is quite convenient. Similar to other
girls, my hobbies are shopping and
traveling. However I also have interest in
reading and listening to music. I am a quite
busy girl. Besides my main job as a public
servant, I also deal in portable cosmetics. I
take extra classes to improve my knowledge.
However, on day-off, I try my best to do
housework and prepare delicious dishes for
all members on my family. On weekends, I
and some close friends often go to the
cinema and go shopping together to relieve
stress. My drawback is that my English is
not very good. You see, I will continue
studying to improve my English knowledge.
