ThisclasswastaughtbyDr.SidneyB.Simon,oneofthemost
unusualteachersattheschool.Hispolicieswereunique,hisgrading
policyrevolutionary,histeachingmethodsunsettling.Peopletalked
aboutDr.Simon.
Duringourfirstclass,ProfessorSimonhadexplained,“Every
Tuesday,youmustbringinanindexcardwithyournameandthedate
onthetopline.Asforwhat’sontherestofthecard,that’suptoyou.
Youcanwriteathought,aconcern,afeeling,aquestionorjustplain
anythingthat’sonyourmind.It’syourwayofcommunicatingwithme


directly.Thesecardswillbecompletelyconfidential.Iwillreturnthem
toyoueveryWednesday.You’llfindthatIwillwritecommentsonyour
cards.Ifyouaskaquestion,I’lldomylevelbesttoanswerit.Ifyou
haveaconcern,IwillrespondtothatasbestIcan.Andremember,this
cardisyouradmissiontickettoclassonTuesdays.”
OnthefirstTuesdayoftheclass,Idutifullybroughtinmyindex
cardwithmynameandthedatewrittencarefullyonthetopline.I
thenadded,“Allthatglittersisnotgold.”Thefollowingday,Dr.Simon
returnedthecardstotheclass.Minehadapencilednote:“Whatdoes
thisquotemeantoyou?Isitsignificant?”Thiscommentmademe
uneasy.Apparently,hewastakingthesecardsseriously.Isurelydidn’t

Theweekprogressed.Thecoursemeteverydayforonehour.Dr.
Simonwasquitebrilliant.Hetaughtbyaskingquestions,raisingissues
thatnoneofourteachershadevermentionedbefore.Hechallengedus
tothink,andtothinkdeeply.Socialissues,politicalissues,personal
issuesallweregristforthemillinthisclass.
Atfirst,Ithoughthewasgoingtopropagandizeusfororagainst

something,butnotProfessorSimon.Instead,hesimplyaskedusto
think,explore,research,questionandthencomeupwithourown
responses.Frankly,Ibecameevenmoreuncomfortable.Therewas
somethingdelightful,refreshingandinvitingabouthisteaching,but
sinceIhadnotexperiencedthisstyle,Ihadno“copingstrategies”to
helpmedealwithhim.Iknewhowtodowellinaclass:situpfront;
telltheteacherhowmuchyou“enjoyed”thelecture;turninneat,
typedpaperswrittenaccordingtoaformula;andmemorize,
memorize,memorize!Butthisclasswasclearlysomethingdifferent.I
couldn’tusethesetimewornmethodstopass.
ThesecondTuesdaycame.Iwroteonmycard,“Arollingstone
gathersnomoss.”Nottrustinghim,Icoveredmyselfwithhumor,
whichhadalwaysbeenmybestdefenseagainstunwantedcloseness.
Thenextdaythecardcamebackwiththisnote:“Youseemtohavea
senseofhumor.Isthisanimportantpartofyourlife?”
Whatdidhewant?Whatwasgoingonhere?Icouldn’tremembera
teachercaringpersonallyaboutmesinceelementaryschool.Whatdid
thismanwant?
Now,Iraceddownthehallway,tenminuteslatetoclass.Just
outsidethedoor,Itookanindexcardfrommynotebookandwrotemy
nameandthedateonit.Desperateforsomethingtowriteonit,Icould


onlythinkaboutthefightI’djusthadwithmydad.“Iamthesonofan
idiot!”Iwroteandthendashedintotheroom.Hestood,conductinga
discussion,nearthedoor.Lookingupatme,hereachedoutforthe
card,andIhandedittohimandtookmyseat.ThemomentIreached
myseat,Ifeltoverwhelmedwithdread.

Wednesdaymorningarrived,andIreluctantlygotreadyforschool.
Icametoclassquiteearlyandsatinback.Theclassbegan,andDr.
Simonbegangivingbackthethoughtcards.Heputmineonthedesk
facedownaswashisusualpractice.Ipickeditup,almostunableto
turnitover.
WhenIlookedatthefaceofthecard,Idiscoveredhehadwritten,
“Whatdoesthe‘sonofanidiot’dowiththerestofhislife?”Itfeltlike
someonehadpunchedmeinthestomach.Ihadspentalotoftime
hangingoutinthestudentunioncafeteriatalkingwithotheryoung
menabouttheproblemsIhad“becauseofmyparents.”Andthey,too,
sharedthesamesortofmaterialwithme.Noonechallengedanyoneto
takeresponsibilityforthemselves.No,weeachacceptedtheothers’
blame-the-parentsgamewithrelief.Itwasallourparents’fault.Ifwe
didpoorlyontests,blameMom.Ifwejustmissedgettingastudentaidejob,blameDad.Iconstantlycomplainedaboutmyfolks,andall
theguysnoddedsagely.Thesefolkswhowerepayingthetuitionwere
certainlyaninterferingbunchoffools.
ProfessorSimon’sinnocent-seemingquestionpuncturedthat
balloon.Itgotrighttotheheartoftheissue:Whoseproblemisit?
Iskippedgoingtothestudentunionthatdayandwentstraight
home,strangelydepressed.AlleveningIthoughtaboutitandabout
somethingmymotherhadsaid:“Themillionairecallshimselfa‘selfmademan,’butifhegetsarrested,heblameshisabusiveparents.”
IwishIcouldsaythatIexperiencedamagictransformation,butI
didn’t.However,Dr.Simon’scommentwasinsidious.Itkeptcoming
upinmymindoverthenextfewweeks.Againandagain,asIblamed
myfatherforthisorthat,alittleinternalvoicesaid,“Okay,suppose

Slowly,mythinkingbegantoshift.Iheardmyselfblamingalot.
Afterawhile,IrealizedthatIhadcreatedalifeinwhichIwasnota

Severalyearslater,Iwassurprisedatmyownprogress.Froma
trivialstudent,Ihadbecomeasuccessfulstudentandthenasuccessful
highschoolteacher.Iwentfromconstantangerandconstant
