“In the satirical essay titled “Advice to Youth” what, exactly, is the advice that
Twain offers to the younger generation?”
In the satirical essay titled "Advice to Youth," Mark Twain offers a series of
humorous and exaggerated pieces of advice to the younger generation. The essay is
meant to be tongue-in-cheek, and Twain's advice is clearly not meant to be taken
seriously. However, there are still some underlying messages that can be gleaned
from the essay.
One of the main pieces of advice that Twain offers to the youth is to be respectful
to their elders. However, he does not mean this in the traditional sense. Instead, he

advises them to be respectful to their elders' faces, but to talk behind their backs.

This is obviously not a serious piece of advice, but it does highlight the hypocrisy
and insincerity that can sometimes be present in society.
Another piece of advice that Twain offers is to always obey their parents, unless
they tell them to do something wrong. This is a common piece of advice that is
given to children, but Twain takes it to the extreme. He suggests that even if their
parents tell them to jump off a cliff, they should do it question. This is obviously
not a good idea, but it does highlight the blind obedience that is often expected of
children.
Twain also advises the youth to never tell the truth, unless they are sure that it is
the right thing to do. This is another piece of advice that is clearly meant to be
taken with a grain of salt. Twain is highlighting the fact that sometimes lying is
necessary, but he is also warning against the dangers of dishonesty.
Overall, Twain's advice to the youth is meant to be humorous and satirical. He is
not offering serious advice, but he is highlighting some of the absurdities and
contradictions that can be present in society. The essay is a lightheart commentary
on the expectations and pressures that are placed on young people, and it is a
reminder to not take things too seriously.
