Part 2. Choose one of these questions which are given in the task and answer
it in a 300-words essay
2. Love is full of sacrifice and helps people live meaningful life even in
difficulties. Do you agree with that opinion? Why or why not? Can you also
prove by your understanding of the story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry
and “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne?
Love is often associated with sacrifice and compromise. In a romantic relationship,
both partners make sacrifices and compromises to accommodate each other’s
needs. However, in genuine love, these sacrifices and compromises are not
experienced as such. Instead, they are seen as a natural part of the relationship1.

The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry is a classic example of how love can inspire
sacrifice. The story revolves around a young couple who are struggling financially

but want to give each other meaningful Christmas gifts. The wife sells her long
hair to buy her husband a chain for his pocket watch, while the husband sells his
watch to buy his wife combs for her hair. The story shows how love can inspire
people to make sacrifices for each other2.

Similarly, The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne explores the theme of love
and sacrifice. The novel tells the story of Hester Prynne, who is forced to wear a
scarlet letter “A” on her chest as punishment for committing adultery. Despite the
shame and humiliation she faces, Hester refuses to reveal the identity of her lover
and instead chooses to protect him. Her decision shows how love can inspire
people to make sacrifices for those they care about3.

In conclusion, love can inspire people to make sacrifices and compromises for each
other. Sacrifices made out of love are not experienced as such but rather as a
natural part of the relationship. The Gift of the Magi by O. Henry and The Scarlet
Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne are two classic examples of how love can inspire
people to make sacrifices for those they care about.
