Part 2. Choose one of these questions which are given in the task and answer it
in a 300-words essay

2. Love is full of sacrifice and helps people live meaningful life even in
difficulties. Do you agree with that opinion? Why or why not? Can you also
prove by your understanding of the story “The Gift of the Magi” by O. Henry
and “The Scarlet Letter” by Nathaniel Hawthorne?
Answer:
Love is indeed a powerful force that can inspire selflessness and enable
individuals to find meaning in their lives, even during challenging times. I
wholeheartedly agree with the notion that love entails sacrifice and contributes to a
meaningful existence. This sentiment is beautifully exemplified in the stories "The
Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry and "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
In "The Gift of the Magi," the protagonists, Jim and Della, exhibit profound
love for one another. Despite their meager financial means, they are determined to
express their love through gift-giving. Della sacrifices her luscious hair to buy a
chain for Jim's cherished pocket watch, while Jim sells his pocket watch to buy
combs for Della's beautiful hair. This story powerfully illustrates that love prompts
individuals to make selfless sacrifices for the sake of their loved ones, transcending
material possessions and demonstrating the depth of their affection.
Similarly, in "The Scarlet Letter," the character Hester Prynne showcases
sacrificial love. Hester, branded with the scarlet letter "A" as a symbol of her
adulterous affair, endures public shame and isolation to protect the identity of her
lover, Reverend Dimmesdale. Despite the hardships she faces, Hester remains
steadfast in her love for Dimmesdale, ultimately leading to his redemption and their
daughter's well-being. Hester's unwavering devotion epitomizes the transformative
power of love, as it enables her to find purpose and create a meaningful life even in
the face of adversity.

Both stories highlight the essence of love, where sacrifice becomes an
integral part of expressing affection and fostering a profound connection. Love
instills individuals with the strength to endure hardships and navigate challenging

circumstances. It encourages them to prioritize the well-being and happiness of
their loved ones over personal gain or comfort.
Furthermore, these stories emphasize that love, in its sacrificial nature,
transcends material possessions and societal judgments. It illuminates the path to a
more meaningful existence, where genuine connections, empathy, and compassion
take precedence.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that love encompasses sacrifice and enables
individuals to find purpose and fulfillment, even in the midst of difficulties. The
stories "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Scarlet Letter" brilliantly portray the
transformative power of love, illustrating how it motivates selflessness and allows
individuals to navigate adversity with grace and resilience. Love, with its inherent
sacrificial nature, holds the potential to enrich lives and make the world a more
compassionate place.
