9. How is love shown in the story The Gift of the Magi? Do you think that love is selfless?
Today many marriages are based on materialistic factors, do you think couples will
have happy lives forever?
Love is a complex and multifaceted emotion that can be portrayed in various ways. In the
story "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, love is depicted as selfless and sacrificial. The
story follows a young couple, Jim and Della, who are deeply in love but facing financial

hardships. With Christmas approaching, they each make a significant sacrifice to buy a gift
for the other.
Della, having beautiful long hair, decides to sell it to buy a chain for Jim's prized pocket

watch, while Jim sells his watch to purchase combs for Della's treasured hair. Their actions
demonstrate a profound love that transcends material possessions. The true essence of their
love lies in their willingness to give up something dear to them in order to bring joy to their
partner.
Love, in its purest form, is indeed selfless. It goes beyond personal gain and focuses on the
happiness and well-being of the other person. Jim and Della's selfless acts highlight this
aspect of love. They value their relationship more than any material possession and are
willing to make sacrifices for the sake of their love.
However, in today's society, the dynamics of relationships have changed. Many marriages are
influenced by materialistic factors, such as wealth, social status, or personal gain. While these
factors may initially provide a sense of security or comfort, they are not the foundation for
long-lasting happiness.
True happiness in a relationship comes from emotional connection, mutual respect, and
genuine love and understanding. Material possessions may bring temporary satisfaction, but
they are fleeting and can never replace the true essence of love.
Couples who base their relationship solely on materialistic factors may find that their
happiness diminishes over time. As possessions lose their novelty, the absence of a deeper
emotional bond can leave couples feeling unsatisfied and unfulfilled.
To have a happy and fulfilling life together, couples need to cultivate love that goes beyond
materialistic considerations. They must prioritize emotional intimacy, effective
communication, and shared values. This requires constant effort, understanding, and a
willingness to adapt and grow together.
In conclusion, "The Gift of the Magi" beautifully portrays love as selfless through the
sacrificial acts of Jim and Della. While materialistic factors may initially attract some
couples, long-lasting happiness is found in genuine love and emotional connection. Couples

who prioritize love, emotional intimacy, and shared values are more likely to build a strong
and lasting relationship, ensuring a happy life together.
