9. How is love shown in the story The Gift of the Magi? Do you think that love is
selfless? Today many marriages are based on materialistic factors, do you think
couples will have happy lives forever?
In the story "The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry, love is shown through the
selfless actions of the main characters, Della and Jim. The story revolves around
their desire to give each other meaningful Christmas gifts despite their financial
struggles. Della sells her most prized possession, her beautiful long hair, to buy a
chain for Jim's cherished pocket watch, while Jim sells his pocket watch to buy
jeweled combs for Della's hair. Their actions demonstrate their deep love and
willingness to sacrifice their most valuable possessions for each other's happiness.
Love can certainly be selfless, as exemplified by Della and Jim's actions in the
story. It often involves putting the needs and happiness of the loved one before
one's own desires and interests. However, it is important to note that love can
manifest in various ways, and not all expressions of love may be entirely selfless.
People may have different motivations and expectations within relationships, and
there can be a balance between selflessness and self-care.
Regarding marriages based on materialistic factors, it is true that in today's
society, external factors such as wealth, social status, or physical appearances can
sometimes play a role in the formation of relationships. However, the long-term
happiness and success of a marriage are not solely determined by materialistic
factors. True fulfillment in a relationship often stems from emotional connection,
mutual understanding, shared values, and genuine care for one another.
While materialistic factors may initially attract people to each other, they alone
are unlikely to sustain a lasting and happy marriage. It is essential for couples to
nurture their emotional bond, communicate effectively, support each other, and
work through challenges together. A strong foundation built on love, trust, and
shared values is more likely to contribute to a fulfilling and enduring relationship.
Ultimately, the potential for couples to have happy lives forever depends on
numerous
factors,
including
their
individual
personalities,
compatibility,
communication skills, and willingness to invest in the relationship. While
materialistic factors may be present in some marriages, they should not be the sole
basis for a long-lasting and fulfilling partnership. Love, in its truest form,
encompasses selflessness, understanding, and a deep emotional connection, which
can greatly contribute to the happiness and longevity of a relationship.
