I’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE!

It’s a strange sensation. A new place that seems familiar or an event that you’re sure has

happened before. How many of us have had this experience? Apparently over 70%. It’s
called déjà vu and according to the experts it’s not something new but has been
happening to people for hundreds of years!

So, what explanations are there for this strange feeling that is both confusing and
uncomfortable? Some scientists think it is related to dreams and memory. It appears that
although the majority of us cannot recall our dreams, we actually store the memory of

dreams in our long term memory. This deep memory can come back sometimes when we
are in a similar situation and makes us think that we have done this before.
However, as usual, not all experts agree. Those who believe in reincarnation – the idea
that we have all lived before – say that these feelings are fragments of memories from
previous lives. But, whatever the reason for déjà vu, one thing it does show is how
complicated and amazing our brains are and that we are a long way from understanding
completely how the brain, and in particular, how our memories work.

Are the sentences true or false?
1. Déjà vu is the feeling that something familiar is unfamiliar. _______
2. People have been experiencing déjà vu for the last hundred years. _______
3. Some people think that déjà vu is related to dreams we can’t remember. _______

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am applying for the available marketing assistant role advertised at www.jobs.ie.

As well as having experience in the marketing field, I graduated from University of
Economics Ho Chi Minh with a BA in Marketing. I am now looking to use the
knowledge gained so far in my career to further help clients achieve their sales targets
and the opening at Acme Business presents me with the ideal opportunity to achieve this
goal.

I believe I meet all the criteria needed for the role. In the course of my studies, I learned a
great deal about the financial side of running a business including details on setting a
budget. I worked as part of a group for a number of projects and feel comfortable as part
of a team due to my interpersonal and communication skills.

At Johnson Marketing, I worked for a variety of major international firms and helped
them learn crucial details about customer behavior. As a result, we were able to
streamline the marketing campaigns of these clients to reduce costs while increasing ROI.
I worked with five different clients during my tenure at Johnson Marketing and all five
enjoyed a sales increase of at least 10%.

In addition to this extensive marketing campaign experience, I also have strong
administrative, communication, problem solving and time management skills. This broad
background makes me an ideal candidate for this position and I believe I will bring
flexibility, efficiency, reliability and innovation to your company. Please read the
accompanying CV which will provide you with further details of my skill set and
academic qualifications.

I appreciate you taking the time to read my application and I look forward to hearing
from you.

Yours faithfully,

Write a narrative called ‘My earliest memory’. Include the following information:
•set the scene
•describe the main events
•what happened afterwards
•how you feel about it now

My earliest memory is not very happy. Indeed, it goes back to my childhood, at the age
of five years if I remember correctly.

It happened at noon, when we were at the table, my parents, my brother and I. As in the
present, because, yes, I have not changed, I was impatient to eat. My mother had taken
my meal, which she had placed in front of my high chair.

Except that, of course, “Sir Impatient”, that is to say, myself, did not wait for my mum to
give me my food, so I wanted to take it by myself. I feel from my high chair headfirst
and all my teeth went into my jaw. So that led me to the emergency room and thankfully
the doctors fixed that.

Today, I can tell this without any pain because I just have the story in mind and no longer
the pain. So can say that everything is well that ends well, even if the pain was long for
many years because I had many dental devices, many appointments with the orthodontist

and I even had an operation, probably because of this accident. But now everything is
over, I have no problem because of that, so I’m very happy.

I still remember many childhood memories and some of them had a profound impact on
my life. Sometimes those memories appear so lucid that it seems only a few days ago!
Anyway, a childhood memory that I can still remember so vividly is when I observed a
few dead people for the first time in my life. I would like to take the opportunity to talk
about it.

I was then seven or eight years old and was in grade three in my school. One day I heard
that a devastating accident had occurred near our house. My mother asked me whether I
wanted to go or not! I agreed to go as I thought it would be an exciting experience – only
if I knew! I went with my mother and a few neighbors and speculated lots of things about
the accident but when I watched 10 dead people lying on a nearby playground and among
them two were kids, I was confounded about the whole event. I started feeling sick and
very devasted. This was, in fact, too much for me to digest.

I had no idea how devastating the accidents could be. The dead people, especially the
dead bodies of two kids, stroke me really hard. I noticed many people were shocked by
the outcome of the event and many of them were discussing how this terrible accident
might have happened. I and my mother returned home and I was unwell for about a week.
I asked my mum and dad several realistic and nonsensical questions after I recovered
from the initial shock. Some of their replies were quite hard for me to understand and yet
something inside me had changed and that change was permanent. Sometimes I wonder if
the changes were for bad, but now I realize it was for good.

This memory is important to me because it helped me to think about life in a different
way. Some even thought my mother shouldn’t have taken me there but due to this event, I
could realize at an early age what the dead is and how fragile our lives are. This memory
helped me to grow faster and opened my eyes to this flamboyant yet transient world.

THE WORKPLACE

The workplace is changing. Gone is the traditional office and gone too are the traditional office
hours. We are no longer tied to a desk from 9.00 a.m. until 5.00pm with a couple of coffee
breaks and an hour for lunch. Technology has revolutionised our working lives in many different
ways.

One of the greatest changes that we can see happening today is related to where we do our work.
The daily commute to and from the office will soon be a thing of the past for many of us.
Technology allows us to work wherever we wish because of the increased ability to
communicate via the Internet and send our work round the world in seconds. More and more
people are taking advantage of this freedom and working from home.

One significant effect of this trend is that people are having to develop their self-discipline and
time management skills. And perhaps the greatest danger is that the workforce will become
increasingly isolated, and some people will see no one from one day to the next. From a practical
point of view, however, the way we organise our days is becoming more flexible and companies
can cut office expenditure. Only time will tell whether the benefits of working from home make
it worthwhile or not.

Are the sentences true or false?
1. No one will work in offices in the future. _______
2. Changes are happening because of technology. _______
3. People talk to each other more these days. _______
4. We have to control our working time carefully. _______
5. Working from home can be lonely. _______

To My Dear Family,

Studying abroad is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, so I am so grateful for this opportunity you
have given me. I'm so lucky to be able to spend six weeks in Newcastle and to be able to travel
around England. The time I have spent here so far has been nothing short of amazing. You have

given me an incredible chance to view so much that others may have never had the opportunity
to see. I have already been able to travel and view the world. While it is sometimes difficult to
step outside the comfort zone and leave home for a bit for a new place, I wouldn't change it for
the world. While I miss every single one of you, you have given me the greatest gift a girl could
ask.

While studying abroad in Newcastle, I have learned more about myself and my ability. I have
learned that I'm independent and am becoming more of an adult every single day. I am strong,
and I can take care of myself. I've learned these traits and skills from my parents- you guys are
the best. To my Mom and Dad, you are the reason that I am the young woman I have become.
You have taught me that I can be adventurous and that there is a great big world out of our home
that's just waiting for discovery. You have pushed me to take every opportunity that comes my
way and go for it.

To my siblings., thanks for keeping in touch and checking on me while I am away. I'm grateful
to have that piece of home just one text away. I can continuously count on you all to brighten my
day and make me feel a little bit better when I am missing home a little extra. I hope for both of
you that in your future, you get to have this opportunity. In addition, I desire that you both travel
and get to experience the great big world as well.

I love you all so much, and I will be home before you know it, and while it sounds cheesy...
thank you for giving me the world!

Love you always xo,

THE NEWS IN PICTURES

The filming and photography in news programmes is very important in bringing the
stories to life and making us realise how events affect people. But the traditional

techniques of filming are slowly changing and not everyone is happy with this.

Viewers have recently complained that camerawork on news programmes, while very
artistic and clever, is more suited to feature films and documentaries. Apparently many of
us are distracted by clever camerawork and our attention is taken away from the real
focus, which is the story.

Several techniques have been criticised. One of these is the ‘circling camera’. This is
when the cameraman goes round the person who is talking so that at one point we see the

back of his head. Another technique is when the camera is not held steadily and shakes. It
gives the impression of slight panic and is often used in films today.
The BBC insists that camerawork like this is a sign of artistic and technological progress
and is interesting and attractive, particularly to a younger audience. But how appropriate
is it to have a circling camera when reporting on something as ordinary as interest rates?
Choose the best answers.
1. Pictures are important in the news because
A. they show us important places.
B. it’s traditional to have them.
C. they help us understand the story.

C. the camera moves in a circle.
4. The television company
A. has apologised.

B. promises to change the way news is filmed.
C. thinks it’s okay to film this way.

B. He likes artistic camerawork.

C. He thinks there should be more filming with news stories.
