Period 98 : Preparation date : 4/3/2008
Unit 12: Lesson : Hobbies -listening
I. Aims :
- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to listen for specific information
- By the end of the lesson, the students are able to learn more about hobbies.
II. Lexical items :
- gain weight - muscle
- efficient - dislike
III. Structures :
- I like lying on the sofa and listening to music.
-I dislike working far from home.
-Nothing is better than going cycling in the countryside on weekends.
IV. Teaching aids:
- textbook - CD player - Sheet of paper
- chalk an board - cards - Handouts
V. Techniques :
- skill-based ( listening, speaking)

Games: word square’
- Put SS into groups of 4.
- give each group a copy of the task(
Appendix 1)
- Ask SS to find in the work square as
directed using the clues given
- Allow SS 4 minutes to do task.
- As the time is up , get groups to exchange
their word squares
-go over the answers with the whole class.
- Ask SS to grade their friends’ work.(Tell SS
to award a point for each correct word).
-After SS fishing grading, have the word
squares returned to the intended groups.
-The group which scores the most points
wins.
-Elicit what SS enjoy doing in their free time.
- Transition:

Today we’re going to listen to people talking
about their hobbies. Let’s see whether they
have any of these hobbies( refer to the thing
from the words square

Teaching new words:
- teach the words below through explanations
in English and Vietnamese.
- Read the words one by one and ask SS to

repeat.
Checking vocabulary:
-Read out these sentences one by one , and
stop at each gap for a few seconds
-Get SS to fill in the gaps with the correct
form of the words just learnt.
-Call on SS to give the answers.
-Give comments and make corrections if

Activity 2: Sentence completion( task b,
textbook, p. 166)
- tell SS they are going to listen to a
conversation between Dick and Tom.
-Ask SS read through the sentence to know

what kind of information they need to look
for.

Speaking : Discussion.
-Arrange SS into groups of five.
- Ask SS to discuss what they like and dislike
doing.
-Assign group secretary who will have to note
down what their group members like and
dislike doing by completing the table below.
- move round giving help where needed.
- call on secretaries to report what their group
members ‘ likes and dislikes.
-Tell SS to write a short paragraph about what
they enjoy doing in their free time and state
