modern Pest, the business and shopping center. From Buda there are wonderful views of Pest and the river. Six bridges join Buda and
Pest.
For nearly a thousand years, Buda and Pest were two towns. Then in 1873 they joined and became one city, Budapest. Soon it
became one of the most important cultural capitals of Europe.
Budapest is very unusual because it has two completely different parts. You can choose the peace and quiet of Buda's woods or the
excitement of Pest, where there are good theatres, restaurants, bars and shops. The public transport system in Budapest is one of the

provided man with food and convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today, nearly two thirds of the world's population live
within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to be used
up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many man's needs. The list of riches of the sea yet to be developed by man's

Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in
a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new materials has made this
possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by the year 2000 the problems that prevent us

It is a characteristic of human nature that people like to get together and have fun, and people live during America's frontier days were
no exception. However, because life was hard and the necessities of day-to-day living took up their time, it was common for recreation
to be combined with activities necessary for survival. One example of such a form of recreation was logrolling. Many frontier areas were
heavily wooded, and in order to settle an area it was necessary to remove the trees. A settler could cut down the trees alone, but help
was needed to move the cut trees. After a settler had cut a bunch of trees, he would then invite his neighbors over for a logrolling.
A logrolling is a community event where families got together for a combination of work and fun. The women would bring food and have
a much needed and infrequent opportunity to relax and chat with friends, the children would play together exuberantly, and the men
would hold lively competitions that involved rolling logs from place to place as quickly as possible. This was a day of fun for everyone
involved, but as its foundation was the need to clear the land.

Education in Bolivia, as in many other areas of Bolivia life, has a divide between Bolivia’s rural and urban areas.
Rural illiteracy levels remain high, even as the rest of the country becomes increasingly literate. This disparity stems
partly from the fact my children living in rural areas are forced to contribute economically to their family households and
thus are much less likely to attend school. On average, children from rural areas attend school for 4.2 years, while
children in urban areas receive an average of 9.4 years of education. A gender divide also exists. Females, on average,
receive about 1.5 years less schooling than males. The female illiteracy rate is 19.6% while that for males is 7.7%. The
country's illiteracy level as a whole, 13-14%, is comparably higher than in other South American countries. The
21

problems with Bolivia education are not necessarily attributable to lack of funding. Boliva devotes 23% of its annual
budget to educational expenditures, a higher percentage than in most other South American countries, albeit from a
smaller national budget. A comprehensive seven-year plan of education reform has made some significant changes.
Initiated in 1994, the plan decentralized educational funding in order to meet diverse local needs, improved teacher
training and curricula, and changed the school grade system. Resistance from teachers Unions, however, has slowed
implementation of some of the intended reforms.

The origins of baseball probably stretch back to 1839 when Abler Doubleday, a civil engineer student, laid out a
diamond-shaped field at Cooperstown, New York, and attempted to standardize the rules governing the playing of such
games as town ball and four old cats, the ancestor of baseball. By the end of the Civil War, interest in the game had grown
rapidly. Over 200 teams or clubs existed, some of which toured the country playing rivals; they belonged to a national
association of "Baseball Players" that had proclaimed a set of standard rules. These teams are amateurs or semi-
professionals, but as the game waxed in popularity, it offered opportunities for profit, and the first professional team, the
Cincinnati Red Stockings, appeared in 1869. Other cities soon fielded professional teams, and in 1876 the present
National League was organized chiefly by Albert Spalding. Soon a rival league appeared, the American Association.
Competition between the two was intense, and in 1883 they played a post-season contest, the first "world's series". The
American Association eventually collapsed, but in
1890
the American League was organized.
