The origins of baseball probably strectch back to 1839 when Abler Doubleday, a civil engineer student, laid
out a diamond-shaped field at Cooperstown, New York, and attempted to standardize the rules governing the
playing of such games as town ball and four old cats, the ancestor of baseball. By the end of the Civil War,
interest in the game had grown rapidly. Over 200 teams or clubs existed, some of which toured the country
playing rivals; they belonged to a national association of “Baseball Players” that had proclaimed a set of
standard rules. These teams as amateurs or semi-professionals, but as the game waxed in popularity, it offered
opportunities for profit, and the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red stockings, appeared in 1869. Other
cities soon fielded professional teams, and in 1876 the present National League was organized chiefly by Albert
Spalding. Soon a rival league appeared, the American Associaton. Competition between the two was intense,

Education in Bolivia, as in many other areas of Bolivia life, has a divide between Bolivia’s rural and urban
areas. Rural illiteracy levels remain high, even as the rest of the country becomes increasingly literate. This
disparity stems partly from the fact that many children living in rural areas are forced to contribute
economically to their family households and thus are much less likely to attend school. On average, children
from rural areas attend school for 4.2 years, while children in urban areas receive an average of 9.4 years of
education. A gender divide also exists. Females, on average, receive about 1.5 years less schooling than males.
The female illiteracy rate is 19.6 % while that for males is 7.7 %. The country’s illiteracy level as a whole, 13-
14%, is comparably higher than in other South American countries. The problems with Bolivia education are
not necessarily attributeable to lack of funding. Bolivia devotes 23% of its annual budget to educational
expenditures, a higher percentage than in most other South American countries, albeit from a smaller national
budget. A comprehensive seven-year plan of education reform has made some significant changes. Initiated in
1994, the plan decentralized educational funding in order to meet diverse local needs, improved teacher training
and curricula, and changed the school grade system. Resistance from teachers’ unions, however, has slowed
implementation of some of the intended reforms.
35. Most of the children in rural areas in Bolivia are illiterate because _______________________.

It is a characteristic of human nature that people like to get together and have fun, and people live during
America’s frontier days were no exception. However, because life was hard and the necessities of day-to-day
living took up their time, it was common for recreation to be combined with activities necessary for survival.
One example of such a form of recreation was logrolling. Many frontier areas were heavily wooded, and in
order to settle an area it was necessary to remove the trees. A settler could cut down the trees alone, but help
was needed to move the cut trees. After a settler had cut a bunch of trees, he would then invite his neighbors
over for a logrolling.
A logrolling is a community event where families got together for a combination of work and fun. The
women would bring food and have a much needed and infrequent opportunity to relax and chat with friends, the
children would play together exuberantly, and the men would hold lively competitions that involved rolling logs
from place to place as quickly as possible. This was a day of fun for everyone involved, but as its foundation
was the need to clear the land.

The planet Earth is 4,600 million years old. It is difficult for us to think about such an enormous length of
time because it has little meaning for us. We can, however, simplify the idea to make it more understandable.
We can compare the planet Earth to a person of forty-six years of age. Nothing is known about the first seven
years of this person’s life. Very little information exists about the middle period either. It was only at the age of
forty-two that the Earth began to flower.
Dinosaurs and great reptiles did not appear until one year ago, when the planet was forty five. Mammals
only arrived eight months ago. In the middle of last week, man-like apes became ape-like men and began to
communicate with each other. Last week, the Ice Age covered the Earth.
Modern man has only been around for four hours. During the last hour man discovered agriculture. The
Industrial Revolution and the rise of large cities began just sixty seconds ago.
During that short time, modern man has made a rubbish tip of the Earth. In one minute, he has increased his
numbers to terrible proportions and has caused the death of hundreds of species of animals. He has robbed and
destroyed the planet in his search for fuels. Now he stands, like a violent, spoiled child, delighted at the speed of
his rise to power, on the edge of the final mass destruction and of killing all the life which exists in the solar
system.

Man is a land animal, but he also closely tied to the sea. Throughout history the sea has served the needs of
man. The sea has provided man with food and convenient way to travel to many parts of the world. Today,
nearly two thirds of the world’s population live within 80 kilometers of the sea coast.
In the modern technological world, the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on
land are beginning to be used up. The sea, however, still can be hoped to supply many man’s needs. The list of
riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology is impressive. Oil and gas explorations have been
carried out for nearly 30 years. Valuable amounts of minerals exist on the ocean floor are ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish
is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by Oriental people.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of
the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use
as a source of energy.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever more deeply under the sea. The development of strong, new
material has made this possible. The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. Experts believe that by
the year 2000 the problems that prevent us from exploiting fully the food, minerals, and energy source of the
sea will be largely solved.

A. the sea resources have largely been used up
