INTRODUCTION
I. Setting
1.1 The necessity of the research.
Every member of the society needs to know their past and each nation
has to know its history. One country will lose if it does not know its origin.
The traditional ethics is prominent among many valuable traditions of
Vietnam. It has been existing along with different stages of development of
the country from building, keeping and developing. It is the transference

among different generations and different socioeconomic patterns.
Therefore, it is necessary to promote traditional values, especially ethnic
value, in order to build new lifestyle for Vietnamese people in general and
students in particular. This is also an urgent requirement for the career of
innovating and modernizing of the country. The documents of the 10
th
meeting of the communist party confirm to: build and complete the value
and dignity for the Vietnamese; preserve and promote the national character
in the periods of industrializing, modernizing and globalizing; cultivate
cultural value among the youth in general and students in particular,
focusing on the life ideal, life styles, intelligence capacity, ethics and
cultural stuff of Vietnamese people. Students are a great force who is
intellect, active and quick to learn the new things in all fields of life.
The value of traditional ethnics is a factor which creates the cultural
character of the country. In the development stages of the country, the ethnic
value is also an interior and indispensible factor, which helps to push the
movement and development of the culture.
There is no doubt that there is close relationship between traditional
ethnic value and the building of new lifestyles. However, the question is in
the market economy and globalization, what are the roles of the traditional
ethnic value? Is it a block or a motivation? Or is it an orientation factor for
the building of new lifestyles? And what will be the content and
requirement for the promotion of national traditional values for Vietnamese
young learners? What are the methods and solutions to promote new
lifestyles for students?
Therefore, in order to build new way of life, we have been continuing to
increase the awareness of the society in general and young learners in
particular about the roles and the importance of traditional ethnic value. This
raises many problems: how do students have right ways in modern society
where many ethnic values have been changing; how students will have real

emotion, right attitudes and solid belief to build their own way of life. It is
2
the traditional value which has an important role in creating particular
lifestyle of the Vietnamese. The degradation of ethnic value and lifestyle has
been occurring complicatedly. Its manifestation cannot be ignored anymore.
Egoistical and pragmatic way of life has become common, which is a
serious problem for our society. In the tenth Meeting of the Communist
Party, we judged that: ‘The statement of degradation in people’s ethnics,
lifestyle and the increase in social evils and crimes have become a worrying
problem, especially in the young.’
Therefore, we can recognize the vital role of career of ‘human.
Promoting the nation’s tradition value is vital, which is to build new
lifestyle for students. Hence, the study on the role of nation’s tradition
value for Vietnamese learners is an urgent issue. For these reasons, we
chose this topic ‘The nation’s traditional values and their roles on
building new lifestyle for Vietnamese students in the context of
globalization’ as our thesis essay topic in the field of Philosophy.

OVERVIEW OF THE REFERENCES
1.1. REVIOUS RESEARCHES ON LIFESTYLES; LIFESTYLES OF THE
STUDENTS AND CHARACTERISTICS OF NEW LIFESTYLES OF
VIETNAMESE STUDENTS
Vietnam in 80s of the previous century, there were researches which
provided theoretical problems about life, such as ‘Discuss the socialist
lifestyle’ written by a group of writers: Tran Do (chief author), published in
1985. Writer Tuong Lai mentioned the relationship between ethnics and
lifestyle in ‘Building new ethnic values positively and actively’, (1983). The
author emphasized that ‘our new ethnics should be expressed in lifestyles of
workers’.
During 90s of the 19th century, in the renewal period, there witnessed
great changes in economy, society…, which initially described the vivid
picture of real lifestyle of the north, students and recommended educational

methods for their new lifestyle. An example of these is Do Long, who
studied the relationship between ways of life and incarnation for the young
in the book : ‘Lifestyle and personality of young people’ (1996). The
Institude of educational developmnent (Ministry of Education) studied
‘Lifestyle characteristics among students- directions and educational
methods ’ (1995), code B94-38-32, observed by Mac Van Trang. This work
defined what students’ lifestyle was and listed all main characteristics of
students’ lifestyle, which manifested through specific activities, behaviour
and personal life.
Thanh Le (chief author) of ‘Lifestyle in socialist society and
globalization’ (2001) deeply analyzed the term ‘lifestyle’. In the context of
globalization, lifestyle is a ‘trouble-spot’. It is valuable to prove the
prominence of ‘socialist lifestyle’. This is totally suitable with the context of
Vietnam when it is in a transition period. ‘Building idea, ethics, lifestyle and
cultural life in Hanoi in the period of industrialism and modernism’ written
by Nguyen Viet Chuc (chief author, 2001) mentioned the importance and
necessity of building idea, ethnics, lifestyle and cultural life in Hanoi, the
capital city of Vietnam.
‘Something about ways of life, ethics and standard of social value’ (by
Huynh Khai Vinh, 2001) shows that: lifestyle, ethnics and standard of social
value are fundamental factors in every personal life. Ethics plays the role as
reasons for living; people’s behavior and social regulation form the culture
5
and people in that society. Author Ha Nhat Thang discussed ethics and
lifestyle of the young and students in his work named ‘Real statement of
ethics, political thought, lifestyle of young people and students’ posted in
Education Magazine number 3 (2002); Nguyen Van Huyen discussed
‘Lifestyle of Vietnamese people in the context of globalization’ (2003)
When analyzing national cultural character, Assoc.Professor-Dr Le Nhu
Hoa concerned about lifestyle, urban lifestyle in the current period, which

was written in her book named ‘The national character in modern lifestyle’
(published by Cultural Institute and Culture-Information Publishing house,
Hanoi, 2003). Researcher Nguyen Thi Hang has a thesis named ‘Finding out
about lifestyle of students in Ho Chi Minh city through their leisure
activities’ (2004).
A recent research by a group of authors (Nguyen Ngoc Ha- chief author)
studied ‘The characteristics of thinking and lifestyle of Vietnamese people
nowadays: Some theoretical and practical problems’ (2011). The research
reveals that the thinking and lifestyle can importantly affect on people’s
activities and the socioeconomic development. Another work is ‘Building
ethic culture and cultural lifestyle in the context of economic market and
integration’. (Political argument – number 7/2013)
1.2. RESEARCHES ON VALUE, TRADITIONAL ETHIC VALUES,
VIETNAM TRADITONAL ETHIC VALUES. THE IMPACT OF
GLOBALIZATION ON PROMOTING THE VALUE OF VIETNAM’S
TRADITONAL ETHICS
Many scientists have a lot of studies in order to recognized traditional
moral value, which is taken into consideration when building cultural life
and Vietnamese people in the career of socialist revolution. Some of
outstanding work are ‘Finding out about the nation’s character’ by
professor Nguyen Hong Phong (published by Science Publishing house,
Hanoi, 1963) ; ‘New ethics’ by professor Vu Khieu (chief author) (Science
and social publishing house, Hanoi, 1974) ; ‘Positively and actively building
new ethics’ by Tuong Lai, (Truth publishing house, Hanoi, 1983) ; ‘The
value of nation’s tradition’ by professor Tran Van Giau (Science and social
publishing house, Hanoi, 1980).
Apart from these, there are also lots of works on ethics, such as:
‘Communist moral principles’ by A.Sixkin, (Truth publishing house,
Hanoi, 1961). In this book, the author confirmed the opinion based on
Marxism about the root of ethics; that ethics is a social form; ethics relates

to tradition habit, custom, which reveals the relationship among people in
6
their daily lives. ‘Ethics’, volumns 1 and 2 by G.Bandzeladze, (Education
publishing house, Hanoi, 1985) analyzed and explained the role of ethics,
mada clear lots of social ethic phenomenon and the relationship between
ethics and the humane.
In addition, problems of traditional value in general and traditional
ethic value in particular are studied by many authors to confirm the role of
traditional ethic value, the necessity of protecting, preserving and promoting
these values in building new society. Hereafter are many other works of
different authors: ‘About cultural moral value of Vietnam’ (groups of
authors, including 2 volumns, Arguing and Information publishing house,
Hanoi, 1983); ‘Traditional moral value of Vietnamese people’ of professor
Tran Van Giau, Ho Chi Minh Publishing house (republished in 1983);
‘Grasp the dialectical relationship between economy and ethics in
innovating people’s thinking’ (Nguyen Ngoc Long, 1987) ; ‘Investigating
Vietnamese youth’s valued orientation in the market economy’ written by
chief authorThai Duy Tuyen (national political publishing house, Hanoi,
1994); ‘Value- Orienting personal value and education value’ by chief
author Nguyen Quang Uan, April, 1995.
The entire innovation of the country reveals many problems which will
challenge the new society. Therefore, ethic problems should be analysed in
the market economy where it may be affected by many complicated factors.
To cope up with this, a group of authors including Associate Professor,
Doctor Nguyen Chi My (chief author), Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen
The Kiet, Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Tinh Gia, Professor Tran
Phuc Thang, Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Hau Kiem, Associate
Professor, Doctor Tran Thanh, Associate Professor, Doctor Tran Van Phong
had the work named ‘Changes in ethic standard in the market economy with
building new ethic value for managing officers in Vietnam nowadays.’ In

this book, authors mentioned new terms on ethics, interpret changes in ethic
standard in the market economy. Thence, they recommend methods and
solutions for new ethic value, build new ethic for managing officers in the
socialist-oriented market economy.
Professor, doctor Nguyen Trong Chuan and Associate Professor, doctor
Nguyen Van Huyen (co-chief author) of the work named ‘The traditional
value faces the challenge of the globalization’ (2002), consisting of pieces of
writing about Vietnam tradition values and current problems in the context
of globalization. There are also some other work like ‘Vietnam traditional
values to face the challenge of globalization’ (2002) by Professor, Doctor
7
Do Huy, and ‘International integration: opportunities and challenges for
traditional value in globalization’ by Professor, Doctor Nguyen Trong
Chuan (2004); work of Professor Tran Dinh Huou with ‘To modern from
tradition’ published by KZ-07.
To discuss ethics, ethic value, there are some works like ‘Vietnam
traditional ethic values and global popularity of ethics in the market economy’
by Tran Nguyen Viet (Philosogy magazine, Number 5, 2002); ‘From
traditional ‘goodness’’ to ‘goodness’ in the market economy in Vietnam today’
by Professor Nguyen Hung Hau (Philosogy magazine, Number 8, 2002);
‘Ethic norm of a political leader nowadays’ by Associate Professor, Doctor
Tran Van Phong (Philosogy magazine, Number 5, 2003); ‘Promoting Vietnam
traditional love in the current period’ by Nguyen Thi Nga (Communist
magazine, number 1, 2006); author Mai Thi Quy with ‘The Effect of
globalization on industriousness and saving practice of Vietnamese people’
(Philosophy, number 5/2007)
Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen The Kiet (2006) discussed some
traditional ethic values through ‘Some ethic value of Vietnam: From
tradition to Ho Chi Minh’ (Theoretical politics magazine, number 7, 2006).
The author of ‘The issue of ethic Maxism and building ethics in the current

market economy’ (2012) made clear the change of ethic standard under the
impact of the market economy in Vietnam, so that it is necessary to have
oriented solutions in order to build ethics and against the degradation of
ethics, lifestyle as well.
1.3. RESEARCH WORKS ON THE ROLES, REAL SITUATION AND
REASONS OF TRADITIONAL ETHIC VALUES IN BUILDING NEW WAYS
OF LIFE FOR VIETNAMESE COLLEGE STUDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF
GLOBALIZATION
Scientists have studied and published a lot of works which have high
theoretical as well as practical values, in which we can name: Nguyen Khac
Vinh with ‘Building ethic lifestyle and social standard to develop people’
(Theoretical Information Magazine, number 3, 1999); the philosophy thesis
by Tran Sy Phan ‘Educating ethics with forming and developing students’
characteristics for Vietnamese students’ (Hanoi Academy of Politics, Hanoi,
1999); ‘Ethic ideals and educating ethic ideals for the youth nowadays’ by
Doan Van Khiem (Philosophy magazine, number 2, 2001);
Author Vo Minh Tuan analyzed the expression of students’ ethics under
the impact of globalization through his work ‘The impact of globalization on
students’ ethics nowadays’ (Philosophy magazine, number 4-155, 2004);
8
Dang Quang Thanh, in his philosophy thesis, studied ‘Building socialist
oriented lifestyle for the young in Ho Chi Minh city in the period of renewal’
(2005); ‘Building cultural lifestyle for students in Ha Noi today’ (2005) by
Le Cao Thang.
Vo Van Thang wrote ‘Building lifestyle in Vietnam nowadays (from the
view of cultural nation’s tradition)’ (Cultural Information Publishing house
and Cultural Institute, Hanoi, 2006). In the context of globalization, Nguyen
Thi Huyen (2007) mentioned the integration of ethics and lifestyle of
Vietnamese people through her work named ‘Globalization and the risk of
integration of ethics and lifestyle of Vietnamese people nowadays’

(Philosophy magazine)
1.4. RESEARCH WORKS ON RECOMMENDED METHODS AND
SOLUTIONS, INHERITANCE AND PROMOTION OF THE NATION’S
TRADITIONAL VALUES IN BUILDING LIFESTYLE FOR VIETNAMESE
PEOPLE: IN BUILDING STUDENTS’ LIFESTYLE IN GENERAL AND IN
THE GLOBALIZATION IN PARTICULAR
Luu Thu Thuy (2000), in her summary record of a national conference,
discussed ‘Real situation and solutions for educating ethics, political ideas,
lifestyle for the youth and students in Vietnam’. Basing on the real situation
of students’ ethics, ideal, lifestyle, she recommended some practical
solutions in order to educate, inherit and promote ethic value, nation’s
tradition value for students.
In August, 2004, the Institute of Vietnam social science published the
results of the thesis ‘Social ethics in Vietnam nowadays – Problems and
solutions’ by Professor, Academician Nguyen Duy Qui (chief author) and
other noble authors like: Professor Nguyen Duc Binh, Professor Vu Khieu,
Professor Nguyen Trong Chuan, Professor Hoang Chi Bao, Associate
Professor, Doctor Nguyen Van Phuc. In their thesis, they pointed out the
reasons for the degradation of ethics and proposed methods and solutions for
building social ethics.
In the book named ‘About educating revolution ethics in cadres, party
members nowadays- Real situation and solutions’, National politics
publishing house, Hanoi, 2004, authors considered the term ‘lifestyle’ as an
ethic category; Vo Van Thang suggested some solutions in building ways of
life by raising awareness of students on the role of traditional culture in his
writing ‘Raising students’ awareness of the role of traditional culture in
people’s lifestyle nowadays’, (Education Magazine, number 234, 2010)
9
1.5. SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER THESIS
Firstly, all works on ethics, traditional ethic values and students’

lifestyle have been written in the form of science articles or scientific
researches, but no work has studied systematically under the view of
philosophy about the nation’s tradition ethic value in connection with
building new lifestyle for Vietnamese learners in the context of
globalization.
Recent works have only settled a general picture on the lifestyle,
students’ lifestyle; the expression has not brought out which are the most
fundamental and decisive factors, the specific characters of students’
lifestyle. They have not, moreover, considered the connection and impact
between these factors and relative factors.
There is a need for the following thesis to inherit, supplement and
complete the concepts of lifestyle, new lifestyle, building new lifestyle for
students; recognizing the role of traditional ethic value in building new
lifestyle for students in the context of globalization.
Secondly, not many published works on the real situation of students’
lifestyle are deep enough. In most works, the writers mainly discussed the
ways of life of Vietnamese people. No work has analyzed systematically and
totally the real situation of promoting traditional value in building new ways
of life for Vietnamese people in the context of globalization.
Thirdly, although the published works suggest solutions to promote the
traditional ethic values in building new lifestyle for students and some
solutions are feasible, inheritable and also focus on the traditional value,
there are no works on global data. The data collected were not feasible and
did not recommend concrete orientation and major methods to promote the
traditional value on building new way of life for Vietnamese students in the
context of globalization.
The mentioned researches are related to the current thesis in some ways,
with different approaches, different methods. However, there are not any
complete researches on traditional ethic value in building lifestyle for
Vietnamese students in such a globalization stage. From the above reasons,

this thesis namely: ‘The Nation’s traditional values with building new
lifestyle for Vietnamese students in the context of globalization’ will focus
on the problem philosophically.

Chapter 2
LIFESTYLE AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE NATION’S
TRADITIONAL VALUES IN BUILDING NEW LIFESTYLE FOR
VIETNAMESE STUDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF
GLOBALIZATION
2.1. LIFESTYLE AND THE IMPORTANCE AND THE CONTENT OF
BUILIDNG NEW LIFESTYLE FOR VIETNAMESE STUDENTS
2.1.1. Lifestyle, the importance and content of building new
lifestyle for Vietnamese students nowadays.
2.1.1.1. Definitions of lifestyle
For a long time ‘lifestyle’ has become a subject matter for many
sciences, such as psychology, education, ethics, philosophy, culture… The
word ‘loi song’ in French means ‘mode de vie’, in English ‘mode of life’ or
‘way of life’, and in Germany ‘Lebensweise’. Although there are plenty of
researchers, thesis mentioning this, up to now there has not been any fix
definition on this.
In ‘German Thinking System’, Marx-Engles wrote: We should not
study the mode of production by just considering it as a re-production of the
body of an individual. It should be considered as ways of activity of each
individual, an alive mode of living.
From this, Marx showed us that producing is the decisive factor of the
existence of every person; mode of production is the basic activity and the
mode of living of the people; the basic side of lifestyle.
Analyzing lifestyle based on the mode of activity and the total of
relationships in economy, politics, culture and society of each person in a
socioeconomic pattern, Rukevik stated that ‘Lifestyle is a complete system-

a system of characteristics which express activities of the different ethnic
groups, classes, social groups, and of every single person in a certain pattern
of a society.’
In Vietnamese, ‘lifestyle’ is a compound noun, including the word ‘life’
and ‘style’. ‘Style’ is the manner, method, mode. ‘Living’ is ‘activities’,
biologically and socially past activities of the people. The Vietnamese and
Chinese-Vietnamese dictionary also only mention the term ‘simple way of
life’ to exemplify for the word ‘way’ and extract ‘life style’ to mention the
term ‘living’.
The term ‘lifestyle’ (ways of life) was used first in the IV national party
congress and continues being mentioned in the following party congress.
11
The VI party stated that : ‘The problem of detegration in politics and party
members ; the problem of corruption, bureaucracy, dissipation and social
evils (which have not only been prevented, but also happened more
complicatedly) reduces the people’s belief on Party and the country. The
degration of people’s ethics is not only occuring in some party members,
officers, but also in different classes, especially in the young.
Absorbing the ideas of Marxism- Leninism on lifestyle, Professor
Vu Khieu defined the term ‘lifestyle’ in his work named ‘Vietnamese
culture- Society and People’: Lifestyle is a social category, which
generalizes the activities of all minorities, classes, groups, individuals in a
certain socioeconomic pattern and is presented in all fields of life: in
working and enjoying, in the relationships among people, in spiritual
activities and culture.
It can be inferred from this definition the fundamental characteristics
of lifestyle, from the material of lifestyle such as material mode of
production and socioeconomic pattern to the spiritual activities of lifestyle.
When considering the lifestyle in connection with people’s living and
with a socioeconomic pattern, Professor Thanh Le defined: ‘Lifestyle is a

basic thinking system, which is about the activities of all minorities, classes,
groups, and individuals relating to conditions of a certain socioeconomic
pattern’. Doctor Nguyen Viet Chuc thought: ‘Lifestyle is the harmonization
and generalization of stably typical living patterns of the people, which work
in the conditions of certain socioeconomic pattern.’
To sum up, basing on different opinions of different researchers about
lifestyle, we can conclude that:
- Lifestyle is the harmonization and generalization of the people’s
activities in connection with the conditions of certain socioeconomic
patterns.
- Lifestyle is adjusted by mode of production and living conditions of a
society.
- Lifestyle is the harmonization and generalization between material
and spirit relationships, between an individual and a society, a nation and the
whole world.
- Lifestyle generally has cultural characteristics.
Therefore, lifestyle is ways of living of people in a certain regime
expressed in different fields of life, such as production, politic activities,
spiritually cultural activities and daily activities.
12
Considering the term lifestyle, it is clear that lifestyle has a stick
relationship with other concepts like reason for living, way of living and
living standard, etc
2.1.1.2. New ways of life – communist lifestyle, building new lifestyle
in Vietnam nowadays.
The appearance of socialist production relations resulted in the
socialist way of life. The communist lifestyle satisfies the tasks of building
socialist; solves have-to-do assignments and evaluates the people’s typical
behaviors.
According to Professor Thanh Le: ‘The socialist way of life is one

which is suitable for a typical socialist socioeconomic pattern with the
socialist mode of production’
The socialist lifestyle is the combination between traditional values
and new ideals and values in every action and behavior New ways of life
are not only the pure expression of production mode or economy, but they
are also the reflection of spiritual life of the nation- in culture and behavior
of the people.
Building new ways of life in Vietnam nowadays
The nature of building new lifestyle is the humanizing all social lives in
connection with the industrialization and modernization of the country.
People in this society will enhance their self-control, self-consciousness,
inner strength and perfect themselves. It will be a nationally characteristic-
modern-civilized lifestyle, which is connected with the period of building a
Vietnamese culture which is forward-looking and has national character.
From the above requirements, we should notice the followings:
Firstly, the new way of life should have ethic standard, lofty and
beautiful ideals and should be the harmonious combination of good
traditions of the country and the culture of the mankind.
Secondly, building new lifestyle is actually targeting to develop perfect
people, who have rich personalities.
Thirdly, new lifestyle should obey constitution and laws of the country.
2.1.2. The importance and the content of building new ways of life
for Vietnamese students in the context of globalization
2.1.2.1. Students and the activity characteristics of Vietnamese
students.
Vietnamese students are the ones who are studying at universities,
colleges in Vietnam: They belong to a specific class. They are studying and
forming personalities, ethics and lifestyle. Although they have fundamental
13
qualifications and thinking ability, they are still very young, aged from 18 to

25 and their life experiences are limited; they are under different pressures
and they are easily agitated by the globalization.
Students in the society are the representatives of a special group. In
personal, students are maturing their physical strength and social knowledge;
forming their personalities; absorbing qualifications and skills in a certain
career. This is the time when students develop their critical thinking, especially
their world view, outlook in life, ambition and their job favorite.
Although students have fundamental scientific knowledge and thinking
ability, they are young, lack of life experiences and are under lots of
pressures and easily affected by the globalization. Some students do not
cope up with changing environment. Due to unstable psychology, some
desire to new things and are affected by imitating lifestyle, pragmatic and
changing lifestyle.
If students’ dreams are not correctly oriented, they will be affected by
negative behaviors especially people who lack of life experiences and have
unstable psychology like students.
Most students are hard-working. They are improving their
qualifications and promoting good traditional values of the former
generations. Students study different majors, and they will do different jobs
in the future which have high science levels. They are dynamic, creative,
clear-headed and quickly adopt new things. A majority number of students
have ideals, dreams and great ambitions. They are ready to overcome
difficulties, challenges to make their dreams come true.
2.1.2.2. The importance of the value of traditional morality in
building new life style for students in the context of globalization
The term ‘lifestyle’ is necessarily understood belongs to the
connotation of buildinways of life of Vietnamese people in general.
However, we should focus on the characteristics of the students because of
their physiology and psychology as well as their living conditions.
Therefore, new way of life of the students is their specific activities, which

are nationally characterized, modern and civilized. These activities include
their studying and their personal life, from their living ideal, value
orientation to their behavior in daily life and in the relationship among
people of the students
Nowadays, in the context of globalization, building new ways of life
for students have vital and strategic meanings for the following reasons:
14
Firstly, new lifestyles are not only target but also motivation for the
development of the society, perfecting people in general and students in
particular.
Secondly, new lifestyles play an important role in ‘preventing’ and
‘immunizing’ for the whole society, especially for students who may be badly
influenced by the market economy, globalization and the ‘peace situation’
conspiracy of the rivals.
Thirdly, building new ways of life for students stems from requirements
and assignments of the Vietnamese students in the current time.
2.1.2.3. Basic contents of building new ways of life for students
It is necessary to set the norms for building new ways of life for
students nowadays:
Firstly, teaching students to love the country, socialism and
willingness to help the country overcome poverty and
underdevelopment. Students should have passion in studying, be honest
in both studying and working.
Secondly, equipping students with the awareness of living for the
community; responsibility, pure conscience and tolerance; equipping
students life with ideals, dreams and ambitions. Students should be
energetic, confident and should believe in the revolutionary career of
the nation.
Thirdly, building a civilized and well-behaved life for all people;
people should follow the laws and should protect the environment, the right

and good things.
Fourthly, building correct attitude in students’ friendship and love;
building good habit and ethic and cultural behavior for them.
2.2. THE NATION’S TRADITIONAL ETHICAL VALUES AND THEIR
ROLES IN BUILDING NEW WAYS OF LIFE FOR VIETNAMESE STUDENTS
IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION
2.2.1. Values and the nation’s traditional ethical values of the
Vietnamese
Value is the achievements people contribute in the development of the
social history, and which is for the sake of profit and happiness of the
community. Value appears in the relationships between the subject and
object, from the realities and strugglings.
Therefore, ‘when mentioning the term ‘value’, we want to confirm the
positive side of it, i.e considering ‘value’ as the right, goodness, beauty; and
as something encouraging people to act and try their best.’
15
Ethic value is a basic factor which contributes to value system of social
life. Ethic value is standards, ideal models, chosen rules in order to adjust
and evaluate behavior between people and people, people and the society.
Tradition, in term of specific trait, is somehow stable. It is recognized
by the community and deeply goes into people’s psychology and custom
from one to another generation.
Promoting traditional ethic values is making the standardized value,
the goodness, beauty which are defined in society.
The nation’s traditional ethic values
The Vietnamese nation’s traditional ethic values are good
characteristics which was formed, transferred, chosen and inherited from
one to other generations. This humanized value is recognized in the
community, is relatively stable and expressed in popular standard, which is
to adjust people’s behavior.

According to attitudes of scientists and the communist party, it can be
said that the nation’s traditional ethic values includes:
Patriotism is the love and royalty to the country, which can be seen in
thirst and active actions to support the country.
Altruism and tolerance is the ethic value tradition of our country. From
the old days Vietnamese people, in working and fighting for their country,
always live for nobility and help one another to overcome difficulties.
Community feeling and solidarity is spiritual factor which is originated
from patriotism and is motivation for the development of the nation. Thanks
to solidarity we can create great strength to build and protect the country.
Industriousness, thrift and creation in working: thrift and creation is an
ethic tradition stemming from the old days. It is the noble quality of the
Vietnamese people which is transferred, kept and developed by different
generations.
Courageousness and undauntedness of the Vietnamese are prominent
qualities in traditional ethic values. Thanks to these qualities we are always
successful in fighting against natural canamities and enemy-inflited
destruction.
The tradition fondness for learning of Vietnamese people originated
from the long-standing time and becomes a prominent beauty in the nation’s
tradition. Years ago the Vietnamese acknowledged that learning was not
only the right but also the duty for every person.
16
Thirst and love for peace
Due to being attacked by many invaders, Vietnamese always thirst for
peace. They desire a peaceful and happy life for all people, and the stability
and development for all countries in the world. Thirst and love for peace
becomes the nation’s tradition value, and also rule and moral principles for
all Vietnamese people.
2.2.2. Roles of the nation’s traditional ethic values in building new

ways of life for students in the context of globalization
The traditional ethic values play a vital role in building new ways of
life (a communist lifestyle) for Vietnamese people in general and for
Vietnamese learners in particular.
Firstly, the traditional ethic values play a basic role in building new
ways of life for Vietnamese students nowadays.
Secondly, the traditional ethic values are inherited and upheld to
become new characteristic for positive lifestyle for students.
Thirdly, the traditional ethic values are motivation as well as reasons
for developing country, which create the spiritual strength and stuff for the
young- therefore, they are able to overcome difficulties in the context of
globalization.
Fourthly, building traditional ethic values contributes to the balance
between material and spiritual life, helping the students overcome bad
effects of the market economy and globalization.
Therefore, for students, the future intellectual force, building new ways
of life is oriented and vanguard. In the context of globalization, building new
ways of life for students is very important and has strategic meaning.
Chapter 3
THE NATION’S TRADITIONAL ETHIC VALUES AND BUILDING
NEW WAYS OF LIFE FOR VIETNAMESE STUDENTS IN THE
CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION - REAL SITUATION AND
PROBLEMS
3.1. GLOBALIZATION AND ITS EFFECTS TO UPHOLDING
TRADITIONAL ETHIC VALUES IN BUILDING NEW WAYS OF LIFE FOR
STUDENTS
3.1.1. The nature of globalization
In the eye of philosophy, globalization is the indispensible movement
of the mankind; it happens during the development and is reaching its high
17

level. Thanks to material production, the human beings can exist and
develop. Therefore, globalization stemmed from the powerful development
of productive forces and socialized production.
3.1.2. The impacts of globalization on upholding traditional ethic
values in building new ways of life for students.
3.1.2.1. The positive impacts of globalization
Firstly, by allowing free trade we attract investors, widen exporting
market and stimulate the market economy.
Secondly, globalization creates good conditions for building new and
modern lifestyle, which both inherits the nation’s tradition ethic values and
acquire the human’s culture.
Thirdly, globalization creates favorable conditions for exchanging
culture, science; acquiring information and human’s culture in order to
enrich the nation’s culture, which is the base of building new ways of life
for students.
3.1.2.2. Bad effects of globalization
Firstly, globalization is the reason for the dependence in economy and
culture, which can lead to the dependence in politics. This threatens the
safety of the country; creates the crisis of people’s confidence in human
civilization value; encourages people to follow pragmatic lifestyle and
remote from the traditional values.
Secondly, globalization invents challenges, even threats to break the
Vietnamese traditional ethic values and sinks the culture into oblivion.
Thirdly, globalization makes people face with lots of challenges and the
country becomes less safe.
Fourthly, globalization creates inequality between developing countries
and developed countries, far gap between the rich and the poor and finally
results in two different lifestyles.
3.2. THE REAL SITUATION OF UPHOLDING THE NATION’S
TRADITIONAL ETHIC VALUES IN BUILDING NEW WAYS OF LIFE FOR

VIETNAMESE STUDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION
3.2.1. The real situation of upholding the value of ‘patriotism’, the
nation’s ‘self-strengthening’ to build new ways of life for students in the
context of globalization
Promoting the traditional ethic values in building new lifestyle is an
important subject matter. When the war ended, our communist party took
care of all fields of life for the community, including building new culture,
ethics and lifestyle for the young and students are important subjects.
18
When mentioning ‘patriotism’ of Vietnam, president Ho Chi Minh
stressed: ‘Our citizens have great love for the country. It is the noble
tradition of the Vietnamese. Since the old days, every time we were
invaded, this tradition has become a powerful wave which can sweep all
the enemies’.
In the work named ‘Developing culture and the people in the period of
industrialization and modernization’ (the country-level scientific work-
number 4), which investigated 1, 585 students in 13 universities in Hanoi,
Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh city on patriotism, and pride of the nation’s
tradition showed that: From 89.7% to 94.9% students think that ‘Patriotism
and pride of the country are important ethic value’; from 75% to 85%
students are desired to contribute to the building of the country.
In the current conditions, the students’ noble lifestyle should connect closely
with the period of industrialization and modernization, contributing to the
socialism and should have ideal as well as belief in building Vietnam- a country
of ‘rich citizens, strength, equality and civilization’
Hence, it is important to uphold the patriotism, self-strength in
cultivating ideal and belief in building for students. This encourages
students to study to support the country, the citizens and building a
citizen-owned Vietnam- a country for peace, freedom and richness as in
Uncle Ho’s wishes.

3.2.2. Promoting ‘a sense of community, solidarity spirit’ in order to
build new ways of life for students in the context of globalization
A sense of community, solidarity spirit are noble traditional ethic
values. Solidarity is the nation’s power in building and protecting the
country as well as expressing the self-strength of the country.
It can be said that the sense of community and solidarity spirit have
become the inner strength and are one of noble traditional ethic values of the
Vietnamese, contributing to the career of national liberation, building and
protecting the country. Uncle Ho concluded: ‘Solidarity, solidarity and great
solidarity. Success, success and great success’
Upholding the traditional ethic values has recently directed in building
collective spirit and solidarity. It also connects personal interest and the
community’s interest ; fights against practical and lowly lifestyle. By both
educating and giving good samples, we can educate the collective spirit in
working and studying for students.
A majority number of Vietnamese students study hard and follow Uncle
Ho’s advices; they try their best to have ‘Students with 5 good things’ title.
19
They contribute their brainpower and health for the target of a country of
rich citizens, power, equality and civilization.
In schools, however, there are a number of students who lack a sense
of responsibility. They live without ideals, belief and they do not care the
real situation of the country. Therefore, they are trapped in ‘ego’. The above
results reveal that besides positive views, there are negative which need to
be aware and made better, such as the lost in belief in socialism; not striving
for becoming a socialist party member, not caring about the political affairs.
3.2.3. Real situation of promoting the value of ‘compassion and
tolerance’ in building new ways of life for students
Compassion is a noble tradition of the nation. For years it has been
inherited, promoted and raised to a higher position in building people’s

lifestyle. Youth and students have contributed to a lot of meaningful
movements, expressing love, sharing and tolerance between people and
among communities. The Vietnamese Youth Union, which is continuously
innovative, has carried out many activities like ‘Volunteering for the
community’; ‘The youth follow Uncle Ho’s advice : live beautifully, live
helpfully’ ; ‘Actions for the peace of the country’ ; ‘Actions for younger
generations’ ; strenghthen voluntary groups ; promote ‘Humane blood’
activities ; cooperate and effectively act the activity ‘Gratitude is the sign of
noble souls’ …
However, these values have been declined and deformed in stylestyle of
many people, including students. The instances are selfishness, pragmatism
and ego etc. Many people have a high opinion of materials and disregard the
spiritual value. This creates ‘live fast’ attitude in some people. This
expresses in many different fields of life, especially in choosing jobs and in
studying of the students.
3.2.4. Real situation of promoting ‘Industriousness, creativity in
working’ and ‘optimistic spirit’ in building new ways of life for students
The values of industriousness and creativity have been inherited and
promoted positively. This is illustrated in personal lifestyle in the
community. With the tradition of industriousness and creativity, the
Vietnamese young generation, including the students have inherited and
made it become an important base to form necessary personalities of new
age workers. A study result (table 3.7) showed that, the necessary qualities
for workers whichs the youth and students put in top priority was
‘accomplishment’ and the second top priority was ‘professional ethics’.
When being asked what the fundamental personalities that Vietnamese
20
young people need to have, ‘creative spirit’ (77.27%) and ‘industriousness’
(47.11%) are their most choices.
Due to negative impacts of globalization, a number of students are lazy

in studying as well as working. They live in a snobbish way; lack of
ambition and live aloof of the nation’s tradition. Fast development of open
economy; integration and globalization lead to many bad effects, which is
depicted clearly in ways of life of students nowadays.
3.2.5. Real situation of promoting ‘the traditional fondness for
learning’ in building new ways of life for students
The traditional fondness for learning is promoted in studying and
researching of the students. Many students study hard and overcome
difficulties to have drastic changes. Building new ways of life should
associate with teaching students the nation’s traditional values in order to
enhance their studying and their skills in different fields of life.
The youth unions in universities have promoted the roles of young
lecturers to become key elements in training and helping students in science
researching. Study movements such as intelligent competitions :
‘Discovering sciencetific knowledge’, ‘Non-professional computer
engineers’, ‘Young creators’… also have effective impacts on studying and
working. Many intellectual competitions attract a big number of participants
such as ‘The young future scientists’ : after only 6 months, there are 21,000
young people who joined with 25,000 ideas, in which the city youth account
for a great number.
Students study to upgrade qualifications. It is the most fundamental
activity, which makes specific characteristics in students’ lifestyle. The
result shown in table 3.5 reveals that the motivation for choosing job is
‘suitable with your ability’ (8.52%), the second choice is ‘suitable with your
interest’ (7.6%), and the next is ‘because it is an important job in the current
society’ (6.74%).
Jobs which have high salary and are easy to offer are the next priority
standard for most students.
However, there are many students who do spend much time not for
studying but for meaningless entertainments. Many of them lose themselves.

This is called a ‘disturbance’ lifestyle. A study of Nguyen Canh Khanh from
Hanoi University of Education showed ‘shadows’ in studying style of
students. According to this study, 50% of students found no motivation in
studying; 36.1% is passive in studying- They rarely ask questions and reveal
their ideas in in-class discussions; 22.9% preferred listening to teacher to
21
asking teacher questions; more than 50% of them did not believe in their
own ability; 40% thought they did not have self study ability and nearly 70%
said they did not have researching ability. Lazy thinking is a serious disease
of many students. In class, teachers speak most of the time and most
questions put by teachers received no answers. This is a common situation in
most classes.
3.2.6. Forms and methods used to promote the nation traditional
ethic values in building new ways of life for students in the context of
globalization
Under the impacts of the economic market and globalization,
Vietnamese traditional ethic values have certain movements. The promoting
situation of these values in building new ways of life for students has both
positive and negative impacts ; both strengths to upgrade and weaknesses to
overcome. Therefore, we need to learn forms and methods to adjust people’s
behaviour in order to promote the nation’s traditional ethic values in
building new lifestyle for students.
The thesis focuses on analyzing forms and methods to promote the
nation’s traditional ethic values to build new ways of life for students. They
are also practical activities for students.
Firstly, actively connect organizations, social political unions in
promoting the nation’s traditional ethic values for building students’ new
ways of life.
Secondly, upgrading the nation’s traditional ethic values in building
students’ new ways of life through a variety of activities in schools.

Thirdly, promoting the nation’s tradition to build new ways of life for
students through mass media and arts in the context of globalization.
Besides the above methods, there are many other ways such as setting
examples, self educating…They have certain roles in promoting the nation’s
tradition to build new ways of life for students.
3.3. SOME PROBLEMS IN PROMOTING THE NATION’S
TRADITIONAL VALUES IN BUILDING NEW WAYS OF LIFE FOR
VIETNAMESE STUDENTS IN THE CONTEXT OF GLOBALIZATION
Philosopher Heghen said that contradiction is the inner impulse of life.
This is totally true in promoting the nation’s tradition to build new ways of
life for students in the context of globalization. These contraditions are
summarized as followed :
22
3.3.1. The contradition between upgrading the nation’s traditional
values and a lifestyle which is away from the traditional ethic values. This is
caused by the effects and impacts of globalization on many students.
3.3.2. The contradition between upgrading the nation’s traditional ethic
values in building students’s lifestyle and a complicated society where the
ethics and lifestyle are badly affected by many factors.
3.3.3. The contradiction between educating the nation’s traditional
values in building new ways of life for students and the limit ability of
educators.
3.3.4. The contradiction between tradition and modern in educating the
traditional ethic values in building new ways of life for students.
Therefore, in the context of globalization many noble traditional ethic
values have been being promoted to build students’ new lifestyle through
variety of methods such as mobilizing different campaigns in companies and
social political organizations.
