*Exercise 1: Narrative:
It was my very first job. I was about 20 and just out of school. I
started working in an office. It wasn’t difficult, but I was nervous
and I wanted to do a good job. A new boss had just taken over. I
hadn’t actually met her yet. I had seen her around the office and I
have to say she didn’t seem approachable. She dressed very
formally and it didn’t seem like she smiled much or chatted with
people. Anyway, I was taking some files to her. I walked into her
office and immediately dropped the files all over the floor. As I
was desperately trying to pick them up, I bumped into her desk
and spilled coffee all over it. It was awful and she was just staring
at me. I thought I was going to have to look for a new job for
sure. Then, suddenly, she started laughing. We both started
laughing and then she told me to sit down. We chatted for a while
and she actually wanted me to take on more responsibilty. It
turned out that she was a really nice, warm person. In fact, she is
still a good friend of mine. It just goes to show how wrong first
impressions can be.

WHILE- WRITING: 15’

-Exercise 2:
-Ss write in 4 groups

Task 1) Find the past simple and past continuous, past perfect
verbs,
Task 2) Find the connectors
Task 3) Find the events, climax and conclusion of the story

POST- WRITING: 9’
-T asks groups to write on the
board
-T corrects mistakes

Key:
Task 1)
*past simple: was, started, wanted, didn’t seem, dressed, chatted,
walked, dropped, bumped, spilled, told, turned out
*past continuous: was taking, was desperately trying, was just
staring
*past perfect: had just taken, hadn’t actually met, had seen,
Telling a narrative:
*Past Simple: S+ V2/-ed ; S + didn’t V1; Did + S + V1?
(short action)
*Past Continuous: S + was/were V-ing (long action, happening)

*Past Perfect: S + had V3/V-ed (before a time/ another action)
*Exercise 2:
Write a narrative using the events:
Years ago - took a drive out in the country - got a flat tire not know how to fix a flat - a gang of 5 men stopped - scared to

death- came up to us - “Give me your keys” - terrified handed over the keys - changed the tire - gave us back the keys
- “Now go home” - drove off - not judge people by appearance
Sample:
It was years ago. My sister and I took a drive out in the country.
We were way out in the country, miles from many things when
we got a flat tire. We stopped by the side of the road and got out
of the car. We were young and neither of us had any idea how to
fix a flat. As we were standing there, wondering what to do, a
gang of 5 men on motorcycles roared over the hill and stopped
right in front of us. We were scared to death. The leader of the
group got off his bike and came over, followed by 2 big, roughlooking men. He didn’t smile or anything. He just looked at us
and said: “Give me your keys”. We were terrified, but my sister
handed over the keys. Then we watched as the 3 men changed
our tire for us. When they finished, the leader gave us back the
keys and said: “Now, go home”, and they got on their
motorcycles and drove off. Ever since then, I have tried not to
judge people by appearance.
