I. PHẦN TRẮC NGHIỆM (64 Câu; 8 điểm)
I. Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
word or phrase that best fits each of the numbered blanks.
The Planets of Jupiter
The largest of the giant gas planets, Jupiter, with a volume 1,300 times greater than Earth’s, contains more
than twice the mass of all the other planets combined. It is thought to be a gaseous and fluid planet without
solid surfaces, Had it been somewhat more massive, Jupiter might have attained internal temperatures as high
as the ignition point for nuclear reactions, and it would have flamed as a star in its own right. Jupiter and the
other giant planets are of a low-density type quite distinct from the terrestrial planets: they are composed
predominantly of such substances as hydrogen, helium, ammonia, and methane, unlike terrestrial planets.
Much of Jupiter’s interior might be in the form of liquid, metallic hydrogen, Normally, hydrogen is a gas, but
under pressures of millions of kilograms per square centimeter, which exist in the deep interior of Jupiter, the
hydrogen atoms might lock together to form a liquid with the properties of a metal. Some scientists believe
that the innermost core of Jupiter might be rocky, or metallic like the core of Earth.

Jupiter rotates very fast, once every 9.8 hours. As a result, its clouds, which are composed largely of frozen
and liquid ammonia, have been whipped into alternating dark and bright bands that circle the planet at
different speeds in different latitudes. Jupiter’s puzzling Great Red Spot changes size as it hovers in the
Southern Hemisphere. Scientists speculate it might be a gigantic hurricane, which because of its large size (the
Earth could easily fit inside it), lasts for hundreds of years.
Jupiter gives off twice as much heat as it receives from the Sun. Perhaps this is primeval heat or beat
generated by the continued gravitational contraction of the planet. Another star like characteristic of Jupiter is
its sixteen natural satellites, which, like a miniature model of the Solar System, decrease in density with
distance from rocky moons close to Jupiter to icy moons farther away. If Jupiter were about 70 times more
massive, it would have become a star, Jupiter is the best-preserved sample of the early solar nebula, and with
its satellites, might contain the most important clues about the origin of the Solar System.

There are many ways for a child to get knowledge and to become a good member of the society. Lots of
people used to think that school is the best way to educate children, but nowadays they have changed their
mind. In my opinion, parents are the best teachers because they are those who understand their children most,
they are always beside their children, and parents usually try to be good examples for their children to follow.
First of all, nobody can understand the children better than the parents do. They watch over their children from
the early time, so they know what their son or daughter is thinking exactly, and what their characters or
behaviors are. Because of that, if the children make any mistakes, parents can more easily realize reasons and
correct them on time. After knowing what has been wrong with the children, parents then give useful advice to
them. It is the best way to teach and to explain what is right and what is wrong, what can be done and what
cannot. Thanks to their advice, the children can become more mature and stable. Secondly, parents are always
beside their children at any time. In life, there will be moments that a person falls into difficulties or distress
and it is parents who are always worried and take care of them, make them more optimistic about life.
Moreover, the children’s personality can be best formed when they spend more time with their parents. Every
action from their mother or father will have a deep impact on how the children see the world and build up their

feelings. Because of that, they can realize the responsibility for their own children later. In conclusion, the best
teachers for children are their parents, who have taught them from the first lesson to many things in life with

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions from 50 to 59.
Although speech is the most advanced form of communication, there are many ways of

communicating without using speech. Signals, signs, symbols, and gestures may be found in every known
culture. The basic function of signal is to impinge upon the environment in such a way that it attracts
attention, as. For example, the dots and dashes of a telegraph circuit. Coded to refer to speech, the
potential for communication is very great. Less adaptable to the codification of words, signs also contain
meaning in and of themselves. A stop sign or a barber pole conveys meaning quickly and conveniently.
Symbols are more difficult to describe than either signals or signs because of their intricate relationship
with the receiver‟s cultural perceptions. In some cultures, applauding in a theater provides performers
with an auditory symbol of approval. Gestures such as waving and handshaking also communicate certain
cultural messages.
Although signals, signs, symbols, and gestures are very useful, they do have a major disadvantage.
They usually do not allow ideas to be shared without the sender being directly adjacent to the receiver. As
a result, means of communication intended to be used for long distances and extended periods are based
upon speech. Radio, television, and the telephone are only a few.
Question 50: Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Gestures
B. Signs and signals
C. Speech
D. Communication
Question 51: What does the author say about speech?
A. It is dependent upon the advances made by inventors.
B. It is the most advanced form of communication.
C. It is necessary for communication to occur.
D. It is the only true form of communication.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions from 60 to 64.
In the mid – nineteenth century, the United States had tremendous natural resources that could be
exploited in order to develop heavy industry. Most of the raw materials that are valuable in the
manufacture of machinery, transportation facilities, and consumer goods lay ready to be worked into
wealth. Iron, coal, and oil – the basic ingredients of industrial growth – were plentiful and needed only the
application of technical expertise, organizational skill, and labor.
One crucial development in this movement toward industrialization was the growth of the
railroads. The railway network expanded rapidly until the railroad map of the United States looked like a
spider‟s web, with the steel filaments connecting all important sources of raw materials, their places of
manufacture, and their centers of distribution. The railroads contributed to the industrial growth not only
by connecting these major centers, but also by themselves consuming enormous amounts of fuel, iron,
and coal.
Many factors influenced emerging modes of production. For example, machine tools, the tools
used to make goods, were steadily improved in the latter part of the nineteenth century – always with an
eye to speedier production and lower unit costs. The products of the factories were rapidly absorbed by
the growing cities that sheltered the workers and the distributors. The increased urban population was
nourished by the increased farm production that, in turn, was made more productive by the use of the new
farm machinery. American agricultural production kept up with the urban demand and still had surpluses
for sale to the industrial centers of Europe.
The labor that ran the factories and built the railways was recruited in part from American farm

areas where people were being displaced by farm machinery, in part from Asia, and in part from Europe.
Europe now began to send tides of immigrants from eastern and southern Europe – most of whom were
originally poor farmers but who settled in American industrial cities. The money to finance this
tremendous expansion of the American economy still came from European financiers for the most part,
but the American were approaching the day when their expansion could be financed in their own “ money
market”.

After graduating upper secondary school, the job I like best is to become a student at University of Languages

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
At 7 pm on a dark, cold November evening, thousands of people are making their way across a vast
car park. They're not here to see a film, or the ballet, or even the circus. They are all here for what is,
bizarrely, a global phenomenon: they are here to see Holiday on Ice. Given that most people don‟t
seem to be acquainted with anyone who's ever been, the show's statistics are extraordinary: nearly 300
million people have seen Holiday on Ice since it began in 1943; it is the most popular live
entertainment in the world.
But what does the production involve? And why are so many people prepared to spend their
lives travelling round Europe in caravans in order to appear in it? It can't be glamorous, and it's

undoubtedly hard work. The backstage atmosphere is an odd mix of gym class and workplace. A
curtained-off section at the back of the arena is laughably referred to as the girls' dressing room, but is
more accurately described as a corridor, with beige, cracked walls and cheap temporary tables set up
along the length of it. Each girl has a small area littered with pots of orange make-up, tubes of mascara
and long false eyelashes.
As a place to work, it must rank pretty low down the scale: the area round the ice-rink is grey
and mucky with rows of dirty blue and brown plastic seating and red carpet tiles. It's an unimpressive
picture, but the show itself is an unquestionably vast, polished global enterprise: the lights come from a
firm in Texas, the people who make the audio system are in California, but Montreal supplies the
smoke effects; former British Olympic skater Robin Cousins is now creative director for the company
and conducts a vast master class to make sure they're ready for the show's next performance.
The next day, as the music blares out from the sound system, the case start to go through their
routines under Cousins' direction. Cousins says, 'The aim is to make sure they're all still getting to
exactly the right place on the ice at the right time - largely because the banks of lights in the ceiling are
set to those places, and if the skaters are all half a metre out they'll be illuminating empty ice. Our
challenge, ' he continues, 'is to produce something they can sell in a number of countries at the same
time. My theory is that you take those things that people want to see and you give it to them, but not in
the way they expect to see it. You try to twist it. And you have to find music that is challenging to the
skaters, because they have to do it every night.'
It may be a job which he took to pay the rent, but you can‟t doubt his enthusiasm. 'They only
place you'll see certain skating moves is an ice show,' he says, 'because you're not allowed to do them
in competition. It's not in the rules. So the ice show word has things to offer which the competitive
world just doesn't. Cousins knows what he's talking about because he skated for the show himself
when he stopped competing - he was financially unable to retire. He learnt the hard way that you can't
put on an Olympic performance every night. I'd be thinking, these people have paid their money, now

do your stuff, and I suddenly thought, "I really can't cope. I'm not enjoying it".' The solution, he
realized, was to give 75 per cent every night, rather than striving for the sort of twice-a-year excellence
which won him medals.
To be honest, for those of us whose only experience of ice-skating is watching top-class
Olympic skaters, some of the movements can look a bit amateurish, but then, who are we to judge?
Equally, it's impossible not to be swept up in the whole thing; well, you'd have to try pretty hard not to
enjoy it.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions
Before the 1500‟s, the western plains of North America were dominated by farmers. One group, the
Mandans, lived in the upper Missouri River country, primarily in present – day North Dakota. They
had large villages of houses built close together. The tight arrangement enabled the Mandans to
protect themselves more easily from the attacks of others who might seek to obtain some of the food
these highly capable farmers stored from one year to the next.
The women had primary responsibility for the fields. They had to exercise considerable skill to
produce the desired results, for their northern location meant fleeting growing seasons. Winter often
lingered; autumn could be ushered in by severe frost. For good measure, during the spring and
summer, drought, heat, hail, grasshoppers, and other frustrations might await the wary grower.
Under such conditions, Mandan women had to grow maize capable of weathering adversity. They
began as early as it appeared feasible to do so in the spring, clearing the land, using fire to clear stubble
from the fields and then planting. From this point until the first green corn could be harvested, the crop
required labor and vigilance.
Harvesting proceeded in two stages. In August the Mandans picked a smaller amount of the crop
before it had matured fully. This green corn was boiled, dried and shelled, with some of the maize
slated for immediate consumption and the rest stored in animal – skin bags. Later in the fall, the
people picked the rest of the corn. They saved the best of the harvest for seeds or for trade, with the
remainder eaten right away or stored for alter use in underground reserves. With appropriate banking
of the extra food, the Mandans protected themselves against the disaster of crop failure and
accompany hunger.

The woman planted another staple, squash, about the first of June, and harvested it near the time of
the green corn harvest. After they picked it, they sliced it, dried it, and strung the slices before they
stored them. Once again, they saved the seeds from the best of the year‟s crop. The Mandans also
grew sunflowers and tobacco; the latter was the particular task of the older men.
