“If you had a magic carpet as the one of Aladdin, what city in the world
would be your destination? Explain why?”

Number 11
If I had a magic carpet as the one of Aladdin, I would go right away to Geneva
of Switzerland. This city is a worldwide center for finance, diplomacy and
science, thanks to the presence of numerous international organizations, like
the headquarters of agencies of United Nations, the Red Cross and The
European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Geneva also stays a
cultural center for Switzerland through time with renowned sites, including
Cathedral St-Pierre, Museum of Art and History. Nevertheless, numerous
visitable places are not the ultimate reasons why I long to visit Geneva. I just
need to take a stroll of CERN laboratory and that would be satisfying.
Currently a high energy physics student, I find resource for the subject at my
university rather limited. Up to now, all the reactions between particles, the
main subject of my senior year study, have been either simplified by Feynman’s
diagrams or written in complicated equations. The visual scenes for them only
appear when I focus my eyes on nothing. That simply drives me to long for a
visit of CERN, where accelerators and decelerators are put into work for
research, where particle collisions don’t only appear on paper, so much. And
so, if I could actually have a magic carpet to go there, I would get to see how
my imagination fitted the real scenes of experiments.
Even if I could not see with my own eyes how particles are set to react there, I
would be satisfied with contemplating the accelerator complex built by
tremendous human efforts for science and knowledge discovery. That alone
could help to enrich my imagination, which I think is necessary for science
study, and that alone would be an extremely rare and precious experience for
a Vietnamese student. From knowing the fundamental structures of lab
complex, from hearing any scientists’ discussions, I could well self-visualize
particle collisions and gain different viewpoints. “Seeing is believing” - I trust
whatever I could witness would help to accelerate my study a great deal.

Geneva, where CERN is located, becomes the place I would visit at first choice
if I had a magic carpet. In fact, I think I will really go to Geneva, to CERN, one
day in the near future. However, I would still choose Geneva over other cities
at the moment because, factually, any city I visit will never remain the same
when I set my feet on its land again. Thus, if I had a chance to fly to Geneva
with a magic carpet this time, I would have a different perspective about the
city, the CERN laboratory and the machines the following time. And so would I
about the physics fundamental problems, as I could well be a researcher the
next time there.

Someone asked me where I had would come if I had had a magic carpet as
the one of Aladdin. Then I said that China was the wonderful destination that I
always dreamed to come there. That is a country where there are thousands of
historical years.
China is one of the soonest human civilization. My passion is to see ancient
things. Over 5000 years, China was founded by great works such as tombs,
Great Wall… Great Wall is constructed by soil and stones from 5 th BC to 16th
centery to defend the empire China from the invader. It is 21,196 kilometers
long according to the newest survey. Its average height is 7 meters to the
ground. Once I studied Great Wall from secondary school, I wanted to see it
immediately. The best time to see is the spring. Going long for walk on there
under the immense blue sky must be an amazing feeling. Besides, under the
ground of a somefield, there is a giantly royal tomb of the emporor Tan Thuy
Hoang. The royal tomb was one of the first project that Tan Thuy Hoang
proceeded when he was alive. He used about than 700,000 people to build the
royal tomb for himself. There are about 6000 warriors and their purpose is to

protect the emporor in another world from evil souls. They were made by clay.
That is the greatest tomb I have ever known. Moreover, I love China not only
its historical places but also its culture. They created incredible kung fu films
based on classical stories of the writer Kim Dung. Nothing is more interesting
to stop me watching them. Actresses in films are so beautiful in gorgeous
dresses.
In conclusion, eventhough I was not born in China, this country seems to be
strangly familiar to me. If I have the opportunity, I will not miss to travel
China.

“If you had a magic carpet as the one of Aladdin, what city in the world
would be your destination? Explain why?”

With the development of the society, people are getting busier with their
career. Although I have to face with this trend, I usually spend time thinking about
my life after finishing my work. I think that when I had a magic carpet like Aladdin, I
would definitely go to Paris, France with my beloved people.
First of all, going to France to study is one of my biggest dreams. I am a
physics student since this subject is my passion. Being a Physics teacher is the way I
choose settle and build my future. In order to study abroad, I have searched
information about many countries with their cultures. Undeniably, Paris is the most
suitable place for me with a lot of high – quality universities, having professional
management and good teaching methods. The distance between Hanoi and Paris is
quite far, therefore, the magic carpet will have me enhance my observation about
this place without worrying about financial problem.
Another reason is that I am in love with lifestyle and landscape in nice
country – France. Unlike modern and active beauty in many other cities, Paris has
an ancient grace with lots of beauty spots which I desire to witness such as: Eiffel

Tower, Triumphal arch, cathedral and so on. I always dream in someday that I,
together with my girlfriend, could walk along Seine River at sunset and enjoy French
traditional foods.
Finally, Ho Chi Minh – the Great father figure of Vietnam had experienced for
many years in France. War is over, the relationship between Vietnam and France
becomes closer. I, however, want to understand why Uncle Ho could find the way in
France – the conquering nation to save our country. Simultaneously, learning by
internet, TV or newspapers, I can improve my knowledge in political and historical
areas. Moreover, if I have a chance by this trip, I will bring back the culture and
architecture of Paris which had dominated Vietnam for nearly one century.
In conclusion, although the magic carpet of Aladdin is in reality or imaginary,
everybody has the right to dream about it. Certainly, I will use it for the journey to
Paris. Besides, this magic carpet is also useful for me to help the others.

Man, through the ages, always dream of the magic wings which would
help him travel anywhere on this spectacular Earth. Obviously, as almost other
dreams, it never came true. Nevertheless, nowadays, with the development of
air services, we can go to every corner of this world, wherever and whenever
we want as long as we have enough money. Assume that you had Aladdin’s
magic carpet, where would you go? Actually, each of us will have our own
destination depending on our taste. Some may prefer expensive cities as New
York, London or Tokyo whereas others love somewhere that is more romantic
and quiet as Venice or Vancouver. For my part, despite of the fact that I have
variety of favorite cities, I would like to go for a tour round our unique and
charming capital, Hanoi.
It is seem to be unusual, even ridiculous when I choose Hanoi while I am
living and studying there. Obviously, you might think that there is nothing left

for me to discover in this so familiar city and I should try newfangled places as
foreign cities. However, Hanoi probably is good choice for me because of
several reasons. Firstly, in my point of view, living in Hanoi does not mean you
knew and understood everything about it. Indeed, although I have lived here
for two years, I didn’t have many chances to learn about Hanoi as well as
experience its beauty. All of my memories are the way from my house to
University, some cinemas, supermarkets and something like that. Actually, I
just walked twice around Sword Lake and even haven’t seen West Lake yet. It
must be great if I had a chance to take a walk on ancient Old Quarter, enjoy a
tasty Trangtien ice cream and witness a colorful sunset in West Lake. Such is
the irony of life that we usually ignore close beauties to dream about
impractical heavens. That is why I aspire to discover and understand Hanoi
instead of many other fascinating cities.
Secondly, Hanoi is worthy of a wonderful destination for anyone due to
its multiform attractiveness. What makes the unique of Hanoi is the perfect
mix of traditional style with modernization of an extensive capital. In fact,
Hanoi has a thousand-year history with many ancient places, such as the
Temple of Literature, the One Pillar Pagoda, Thanglong royal Citadel. Beside
this, there are also many modern leisure centers that may be more
appropriate to the young as Baoson Paradise, Kinder Park or World Syrena.
Furthermore, if you prefer to commune with nature, Thienson Suoinga Resort
and Bavi National Park must be wise choices. It is also exciting when we
experience cultural beauties of Hanoi- special food, traditional handicrafts

and colorful festivals. In addition, people in Hanoi are very hospitable, friendly
and enthusiastic. In recent years, the city has made great strides in tourist
industry and gradually becomes one of the most remarkable destinations in
Asia. That is reason why Hanoi was considered as a perfect city to travel.
In conclusion, without suggesting that a foreign city must be a good

choice if I had a chance to travel, I strongly believe that Hanoi is still a
mysterious city to discover. There is no denying that the city has many weak
points, such as environmental pollution, traffic jam or expensiveness. However,
as time goes on, everything will be improved. I am proud of our lovely capital
and whether I had a magic carpet or not, I will go for a tour round Hanoi
someday.

We all know that experienced adventures and challenges, Aladdin lives
happily with Princess Badroulbadour ever after. However, what about the

destiny of his famous magic carpet? Where is it now? Well, let’s imagine it fell
into my hands, then I could travel to anywhere I would like. Do you know
which place I would choose as the first stop of my journey? It would be
Istanbul, of course.
As a history lover, I am surprised by the unique admirable past of this city.
Istanbul was a Greek city called Byzantium which was established around
2600 years ago. The Roman emperor Constantine renamed it to his name –
Constantinople - and assigned it as the empire’s capital. In 1453, the great city
was captured by Islamic Turks and became the capital of the Ottoman Empire
with a new name, Istanbul. For centuries it had been one of the greatest cities
in the world; but the most impressive fact is it survived numerous wars and
dynasties, revived incredibly from all destructions and natural disasters. In
modern times, it isn’t a capital anymore but still the economic, historical and
cultural heart of Turkey and among the world’s largest cities.
To describe Istanbul in a few words, I would say it is a miraculous mixture. It is
a transcontinental city straddling the Bosporus Strait between Asia and
Europe and located on the strategic life-lines of global commerce. Here there
are vestiges of various cultures including Greek traditions, Eastern Orthodox

and Islamism. Moreover, it also shows a harmony of historical places with
modern commercial areas.
If I arrived to Istanbul, I would visit its historical center first. This area has a
reputation for well-preserved ancient architectures and are honored as an
UNESCO Heritage Site. Hagia Sophia, Istanbul’s most iconic structure, has
been my desired destination for years. Characterizing for Byzantine
architecture, it was constructed in the sixth century and stood as the largest
cathedral in the world for more than a thousand years; now it open to the
public as a museum. Then I would walk on long-standing streets to see other
magnificent buildings such as the Topkapi Palace and the Sultan Ahmed
Mosque, which represent for Ottoman architecture. I might also reach the
seashore to contemplate the famous lighthouses and fortresses around the
Golden Horn Harbor, which is, in my opinion, one of the most spectacular
scenery in the world.
For remaining time, I would travel to another half of the city - the modernized
urban area. There I could witness firsthand the rapid transformation of
Istanbul in recent years. Turkey is a rising star in the global economy due to

its natural advantages as well as its thorough and effective reform – a good
lesson for my very country. So there I would view the skyscrapers, the
animated commercial centers. Another thing I want to enjoy in Istanbul would
be seafood and kebab (a typical Turkish cuisine) in the well-known and
upscale restaurants along the seashore. Furthermore, if it were weekend, it
would be wonderful to watch the Galatasaray F.C. playing at the Ali Sami Yen
Stadium, because Turkish people are popularly known as the crazy soccer
fans. Finally, I might come back the old quarter and spend time to look in
some traditional markets there. I would choose some great souvenirs for my
family, my friends and myself, absolutely. And I might able to purchase
another mysterious treasure as my carpet, who knows?

In brief, Istanbul is a perfect combination of natural beauty and human
creativity, traditions and modernity. A travel to this beautiful city would be my
really memorable experience. How about you?

Since being a child, I was fond of fairy tales, especially Aladdin and his magic
lamp. Image of Aladdin fly on the magic carpet over beautiful sceneries has
imprinted deeply in my mind. Were I to possess a magic carpet, I would travel
to many different cities all over the world. By way of illustration, Venice would
be my destinations by virtue of its unique architecture and romantic

atmosphere. Eventful pace of life and exciting amusement of New York also
fascinates me. Nonetheless, my desire is quite simple that is discovering Hanoi
due to its diversity of peaceful, awesome beauty over different time periods in
a day and food.
Hanoi pace of life begins on early morning when citizens also start doing
exercises after good sleeps. The view is so live with varied exercise from slow
tai chi to vibrant aerobics. Besides, taking a trip to Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum in
order to see the saluting the flag is unforgettable experience. When the flag is
pulled to the top of flagpole, I could feel the great effort of previous
generations in fighting and defending country and my patriotism is on the
rise. Having a bowl of Pho help you enjoy a full Hanoi peaceful morning and
provide sufficient energy for a new workday.
Then, however, Hanoi has a vigorous change. From view on the magic carpet,
I can see tremendous number of people trying to go to school or work on time
move on roads and streets. Everybody go out with hope of successful and lucky
day. Hanoi, at the moment, emerges in an active way and it is truly a motive
force of Vietnam economic.
Furthermore, in the afternoon, visiting historical monument is best way to see

Hanoi is not only modern but also old. To take a case in this point, Thaprua,
Ngocson temple and Thehuc Bridge attached closely to Hanoi’s history are
icons of the capital city. Furthermore, The Temple of Literature, which is first
university in the world, is a proud of Vietnamese people. There are also
enormous number of temples and pagodas which assist in revealing entire one
thousand years history of Hanoi.
To finish a day around Hanoi, going out in old quarter is a novel feeling. Thirty
six streets and precincts have created a great mystery matrix in which
strangers are likely to get lost. Hanoi tradition still presents obviously in old
quarters; each street is named after a typical feature. For prime example,
Hang Thuoc is well-known for medicine; otherwise, Hang Chao is where
people sell rice gruel. The air is filled with many smells of delicious and
fragrant favor of foods; however, they have low price such as baked sweet
potato or baked chestnuts, etc. Evening is also suitable time to enjoy Hanoi
delicious foods.

In conclusion, Hanoi has hidden beauties that fascinate me in all time in the
day. It represents peace in the morning, animation in the workday, the past in
the place of historic interest and tradition in old quarter in the evening.
Moreover, food in Hanoi is also appealing and diverse. Thus, Hanoi is my ideal
destination in my adventure on the magic carpet.

When i was a little child, i dreamt about one day i set my foot on the lands of dream called
Disney land,in which all of my beloved cartoon characters live. Day by day, when i entered
my adulthood with mature enough ,my girl's heart urged me travel to Paris known as

shopping paradise and romantic homeland. My aspiration is that one day i can stand
under the Eiffel towel. But one thing changed all my plan. Therefore, at the moment,if i had
a magic carpet as the one of Aladdin, i couldn't wait to expose myself to the dream-like
land, Moscow.
Moscow is neither my academic target nor dream destination, nevertheless, i love Moscow
through each special letter from special person -my best friend. We have known each other
since we were freshman. I was strongly impressed on his local accent, which indicated we
are from same province, right on the first class. Since this day,we became attached to each
other ,due to the fact that nobody can understand our local voice. He always nurtures to go
abroad to study futher and discovers the world. Time passes by quickly, one day he phoned
me and informed me that he gain a scholarship to Moscow Russia. The day which i saw
him off, i could not hold back my feeling and bursted into tear. Just as everytime he
comforted me "Everything is going alright ,be strong my girl" he said.
After settled down 1 month ,he called me via skype to talk a tons of thing about this city.
He showed a lot of photos regarding historical places such as kremlins, Cathedral Square,
Cathedral of Dormition and especially Red Square. But,one day after a tiring lesson ,i
received a hand letter from him. It could not describe how jubilate i was. There were many
pictures with some notes in each ,he actually brought Moscow to me. Regularly on every
25th of each month,i was nervous to wait his letter.Sometime,a line of unending poplar
erased my trouble in hot summer in Vietnam. Snow flakes enables me feel the cold of
foreign country and even of my friend's heart. Gradually, Moscow is becoming a part of my
life and sometime i even felt that Dung was side by side me instead of living far from here.
I indeed did not know since when i have fallen in love with this city. However, last month a
exceptional letter was sent to me-a picture of he and his girl friend. I did not know the
reason why i felt my heart broke down and at that moment i recognized that i love him
more than i have ever imagined . Fromwhich ,we losed contact gradually Moscow is also
far from me forever. Every night Dung and Moscow always appears in my mind
,unfortunatelly, the person who goes along with him is not me..
Thus, if i had a carpet now,i immediately go to Moscow to see the beautiful landscape that i
had seen in photo and especially i really want to know how wonderful it is that stole the

boy i love most.

“If you had a magic carpet as the one of Aladdin, what city in the world
would be your destination? Explain why?”
From I was a child; I have heard the story of The Arabian Nights from my
grandmother. I was experienced a magical world, with magicians, kings,
powerful the Slaver of the Lamp and the idle boy: Aladin. Once, I wished that I
have one chance to riding in the magic carpet to travel to wished places. Now
I am a student at university, and that desire still burning inside my mind.
It takes me hours to imagine the holy 10.000km journey from Hanoi to the
beautiful London. Landing at London is a unique experience, felling
temperature difference interest me fantastically. It is typical behavior for
oceanic climate. London is well known for foggy weather. Hiking on historical
streets, I am observed the Europe’s most visited city which are diverse in
building, particular architecture style, it represent for this city’s glorious

history. The night in London is a hilarious landscape. Alongside of Thames
River, the Tower Bridge has stood for 800 years. Nowadays, it is lighted up by
amazing light system. In order to see the Thames River’s campus, you can
book a seat in the Golden Eyes, a well known artificial work placed next to the
Thames River. Taking off for a bird’s eye view of London, the Tower of London,
St Paul’s cathedral, the Globe theatre and the Thames River are captured in
my view, what a awesome angle. There is a historic and charming beauty I
ever seen in my life.
From my point of view, London’s traffic is much better than ours. Cycling is
encouraged and popular in this city, this contribute a greener environment. In

other hand, the public transport is large in scale and advanced in serving. It is
easy to recognize the distinctive red-double-decker busses on the streets, as
the trademark of London’s public transportation. This system serves a massive
number of passengers annual, what a brilliant transportation.
Coming to London, there is a population of eight millions, with diversity in
ethnic group and religion. It is good place to meet people in variables cultures.
Furthermore, at London, you are dimmed in a standard English environment,
where English is the common language. The British is not very open-minded,
so making a conversation with a stranger in London is almost impossible.
To sum up, if I have a chance to visit a foreign city, in case of choices is
available, London is my first consideration, which is my chosen destination.

Copenhagen- The Green Heaven

6:00 am.
December 21st, 2012
Chirppppp….Chirppp….Chirppp
That strange sound wake me up and I am not believe in my eyes that I am in
the sky, I am in the most beautiful carpet I ever have seen and it is flying!
Unbelievable! I look around but I can’t see anything except floating clouds and
dirty smoke from industrial chimneys. Suddenly, a bird flies to me and drop a

piece of paper: “Today is the last day of this planet. Use this magic carpet to

travel to a place where you want to explore most before everything disappears
forever… ”. Almost immediately, I decide to fly to Copenhagen - capital of
Denmark – one of the greenest cities in the world, where I will not have to see
any smoke emitted from factory chimneys.
I come to Copenhagen just for few seconds later, and it really is amazing green
heaven in our Earth. My first impression about this city is the road full of
bicycles. Citizens in this city love cycling and most of them travel to work by
bikes, this habit made Copenhagen is world famous for its biking culture.
Moreover, Copenhagen is a world leader city in developing new environmental
technology, especially, in renewable energy with numerous wind turbines
scatter along the coast. It is the reason why in 2009, Copenhagen was chosen
to be venue for the 15th annual United Nations Climate Change Conference,
also known as the 15th Conference of the Party – COP15. Copenhagen really is
scarce city that you do not need to wear masks when you are on the streets.
Another reason I want to discover Copenhagen is its ancient architectures.
Although many modern buildings grow, Copenhagen still has contemporary
constructions blend in beautifully with the city’s historical buildings and
palaces. It also is hometown of The Little Mermaid, The little Match-seller, The
Brave Tin Soldier… These fairy tales of Andersen ware a wonderful part of my
childhood, nourishing the soul of not only me but also many children in the
world…

23:59 pm
December 21st, 2012
Everything gradually disappears…
Renggg…rengggg…renggg…
My alarm clock rang.
This is only a dream but the image of statue of the little Mermaid – the symbol
of Denmark still vividly in my mind.
Certainly, one day, my feet will print in this green city - Copenhagen.

Topic : “If you had a magic carpet as the one of Aladdin, what city in the
world would be your destination?Explain why?”

If you ask me what I would do if some day I could own a magic carpet, a
carpet like the one that followed Aladdin and Princess Jasmine on their
adventures around the world, my answer, at any time, will be always the same.
On that flying carpet, I would took a ride to the land where my loving
memories live.

It might sound strange, but frankly, it is what I always long for. Most
contestants will probably wish to travel to famous, fancy, or romantic places;
some of them might be almost out of reach in reality. As for me, my dream is
not that big, and lousy like theirs.

Like other students of Hanoi University of Science, I am spending my life living,
studying, and experiencing in Hanoi, to which I often refer as “a peaceful
homeland”. It would not be a surprise if some people wonder why I call Hanoi
by such name. Not only civilians of Vietnam felt, that even international
travelers will find that the dragon with name “Thang Long” is maturing,
winding with the majestic integration to reach the sky, the dragon scales as
skyscrapers as pierce the blue cloud is lonely away, replaced by massive rains,
the rain that makes people have to walk faster, hurry ... and also easy to
stumble than ever . People today are caught up in the so-called material
world, worshiping monetary value and superficial things. Was born and raised
here, even a generation, but I feel better than ever as the transformation of

the 20 years of innovation, enough to pull the upset in cultural values and
spiritual, as well as tradition through the centuries. With a small wish that all
good values and traditions are preserved, if only I could had the magic carpet
take me back to the past, so that I can relive my precious childhood days,
playing traditional games, eating traditional dishes and enjoying peaceful
moments. And if lucky, with some miraculous power, I could wrap all those
memories up and brought them to the present to help engrave in my mind
that such traditions have to be protected.
