FrommythologicalIcarus,whoseman-madewingsledhimtooclosetothesun,to
LeonardodaVinci,whosedesignsforflyingmachineswerewaybeforetheirtime,human
beingshavealwaysdreamedofflying.Notuntil1903didthisbecomearealitywhenthe
WrightBrothers—OrvilleandWilbur—tooktotheskiesintheirhomemadeairplane.As
momentousasthatflightwas,itlastedlessthanaminute.Ittookanotherfiveyearsfor
WilburWrighttodemonstrateaplanecapableofsustainedflight.Itishardlysurprising
thatameresixyearslater,attheoutsetofWorldWarI,aviationwasstillrudimentaryat
best.
In1914,therewasconsiderabledebateoverwhetheraircraftcouldbeaneffectivetoolof
war.Inpreviousconflicts,cavalryhadbeenthefirstchoiceforgatheringreconnaissance.
Sincecavalrywasprovingtoovulnerableagainsttheenhancedweaponryoftwentiethcenturyarmies,itseemedplanesfittedwithcameraswouldbeafarmoreviable
alternative—andweretheyever.Bothsidesfoundreconnaissanceplanessoeffectiveat
pinpointingenemypositionsthatneithersidecouldgainanadvantage.Theresultwasan
utterstalemateinthetrenches.
Asthewarprogressed,innovationstoaircraftresultedinanincreasingnumberofbattles
intheair.In1916,Germanplaneswerefarsuperiortothoseflownbyanyoftheallied
countries,andthisshiftedthepowertoGermany.Itbecameincreasinglyimportantto
destroythosespiesintheskies.AnewplanewasneededtobolstertheAllies’airpower.

TheBritishSopwithAviationCompanyhadbeenworkingaroundtheclocktoproducea
superiorfighterplane.In1916,thecompanyrolledouttheprototypeforthefirstSopwith
Camel.DesignedbyHerbertSmith,theplanewasmadeofwood,bracedwithsteel.In
Juneof1917,thesmall,lightweightaircraftenteredthewaraspartoftheNo.4Squadron
oftheRoyalNavalAirServicenearDunkirk,France.Theplanemorethandeliveredonits
promise.ByFebruaryof1918,thirteenBritishsquadronsofRFC(RoyalFlyerCorps)had
beenfullyequippedwithSopwithCamels,participatinginbattlesovertheEasternand
Westernfronts.
TheSopwithCamelwasthefirstBritishfighterplanetobefittedwithtwomachineguns.
Mountedsidebysidedirectlyinfrontofthecockpit,theywereattachedto
synchronizationgearthatenabledthepilottofirebulletsthroughthespinningpropellers.
Topreventthegunsfromfreezingathigheraltitudes,theywereoverlaidwithametal
coveringthatgavetheplaneitscamel-likehump,andhence,itsname.
TheCamel,however,hadaseriousdrawback.Itwassodifficulttoflythatmorepilotslost
theirlivesduringtrainingthaninactualcombat.Weightdistributionwasthemain
problem.Mostoftheweight,includingtheengine,pilot,guns,andfuel,wasconcentrated
inaseven-footsectionoftheairplane.Inthehandsofanovice,theforwardcenterof
gravitycoupledwiththegyroscopiceffectoftherotaryengineandturningpropellers
causedtheplanetospinoutontakeoffmoreoftenthannot.
WhattheCamellackedinoperationalease,itmorethanmadeupforinmaneuverability.
Inclose-knitair-to-aircombat,called“dogfights,”thesametorquethatcausedinstability
ontakeoffenabledtheCameltoturnonadime,changingitsdirectionalmost
instantaneously.Bytheendofthewar,theCamelwascreditedwithshootingdownatotal
of1,294enemyaircraft—accountingformoreAlliedvictoriesthananyotherplane.
NavalshipscarriedportableversionsoftheSopwithCamelthatallowedthewingstofold
upandthetailsectiontocomeoffforeasierstorage.Anotherexperimentalmodelfeatured
downwardmountedgunsthatfiredthroughtheflooroftheplane.Thisallowedthepilotto
strafeenemytrencheswhilekeepingtheplanelevelasheflewathighspeedsoverthe
battlefield.
