2. Danh từ ghép (Compound nouns)
A. Những ví dụ về danh từ ghép
1. Danh từ + danh từ
Gold Medal, London Transport (vận tải London), hall door ( cửa đại sảnh), traffic warden (người giám
sát giao thông), hitch-hiker (người quá giang xe), sky- jacker (vỏ che máy mát), kitchen table (bàn nhà
bếp), winter clothes (quần áo mùa đông)
2. Danh động từ + danh từ

Waiting list (danh sách chờ đợi), diving board (tấm ván nhún), landing card ( thẻ lên bờ), dinning room (
phòng ăn), driving licence (bằng lái xe), swimming pool (hồ bơi)
B. Một số cách kết hợp có thể được dùng là
1. Khi danh từ thứ hai thuộc về hay là phần của danh từ thứ nhất:
shop window (cửa sổ quầy hàng), picture frame (khung hình), garden gate ( cổng vườn), church bell
(chuông nhà thờ), college library (thư viện đại học), gear lever (cần sang số)
- Nhưng những từ chỉ số lượng như: lump (khối cục), part (phần, bộ phận), piece (miếng, mảnh, mẩu),
slice (lát, miếng) lại không được dùng theo cách này
A piece of cake (1 miếng bánh), a slice of bread (1 lát bánh mì)
2. Danh từ thứ nhất có thể chỉ rõ nơi chốn của danh từ thứ hai.
City street (đường phố), corner shop (tiệm ở góc phố ), country lane (đường làng), street market (chợ trời)
3. Danh từ thứ nhất có thể chỉ rõ vật liệu của danh từ thứ hai được tạo nên:
Steel door (cửa thép), stone wall (tường đá), rope ladder (thang dây), silk shirt (áo sơ mi lụa), gold medal
(huy chương vàng)
- Wool (len) và wood (gỗ) không được dùng trong trường hợp này khi chúng có các hình thức tính từ:
woolen (bằng len), wooden (bằng gỗ), gold (vàng) có hình thức tính từ là golden (bằng vàng) nhưng ở đây
chỉ là dùng theo nghĩa bóng.
a golden handshake (một cái bắt tay bằng vàng)
a golden opportunity ( một cơ hội bằng vàng)
golden hair (tóc vàng)
4. Danh từ thứ nhất cũng có thể là nguồn năng lượng/ nhiên liệu để hoạt động từ thứ hai.
gas fire (lửa ga), petrol engine (động cơ xăng), oil stove (bếp dầu)
5. Danh từ ghép thường được dùng cho nghề nghiệp, các môn thể thao, các trò tiêu khiển và người luyện
tập chúng. Ví dụ: sheep farming (trại cừu), sheep farmer (chủ trại cừu), pop singer (ca sĩ nhạc pop), wind
surfing (môn lướt ván buồm), water skier (môn trượt nước), disc jokey ( người giới thiệu đĩa hát)
và cho các cuộc thi đấu:
football match (trận bóng đá), tennis tournament (tranh giải vô địch tenit), beauty contest ( cuộc thi hoa
hậu), car rally (đua xe hơi tốc độ nhanh)
6. Danh từ thứ nhất chỉ sự thu hẹp phạm vi của danh từ số 2.
Sales Department, Human Resources, coffee cup ( tách cà phê), escape hatch (cửa thoát hiểm), golf club

(câu lạc bộ chơi gôn), chess board (bảng thông báo), football ground (sân bóng đá), telephone bills (hóa

đơn tiền điện thoại), entry fees (vé vào cửa), income tax (thuế thu nhập), car insurance (tiền bảo hiểm xe),
water rates (tiền nước), parking fine (tiền phạt đậu xe).
Tương tự với các từ chỉ ủy ban, ban ngành, các cuộc nói chuyện, hội nghị v.v…
housing committee (ủy ban về nhà ở), education department (sở giáo dục), peace talks (cuộc đàm phán
hòa bình).
7. Ghép danh động từ với danh từ:
Ví dụ: a sleeping bag, a reading lamp, skating rink (sân trượt băng)
