Create a Civilization Project
It is the year 2112. The world is no longer habitable. Pollution and
deforestation have made the air and water too dirty for humans. The
population got out of control. The temperature of the earth is too hot and the
icecaps have been melting rapidly. There is not much land left. Most of the
world is covered in water. Modern civilization as we know it has collapsed.
There aren’t any cities or countries anymore. There are only a few groups of
humans that have survived. They are building new civilizations that protect
them from the harsh environment.
You are in one of these groups. You have to create a new civilization so life
can go on. You must create a new habitat for human life to prosper. Do not
make the same mistakes from the past. This is a new beginning.

hurricanes, tsunamis, tornadoes, fires?

Create a Civilization Project Details
1. First you must choose where your new civilization will be. Choose
from these locations or create your own:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.

Under ground
Under the ocean
On Mars
Floating on the ocean
In space
In a volcano

2. Next answer the questions on the worksheet and plan your
civilization with your group. Try to think of all the details and things
you might need.
3. Now make a poster for your civilization to show to the class. It must
have at least one picture. It must explain all the details of your
civilization and how it works. Use the information from the worksheet
and group discussion.
4. Finally, write a one page history and description of your civilization.
How did it begin? Is it successful? How? Explain the information on
your poster in more detail.
5. Your group will present your civilization and your poster to the
class.

NOTE:
I used this as a project in a summer camp. As an intro activity into the
project I used this activity which is great:
/>
It helps get the students acquainted with the language they might
need and gives them an idea of what they need to do and think about
for the project. I think the total project took about 4-5 hours. I feel
there was a lot more I could have incorporated into this but there
were time constraints.
Here is an example of one poster:
