On 26th May 1828, the people of Nuremberg in Germany found a teenage boy who
waswandering alone through the streets. When they came across him, he had
no possessions except for two old letters. Because of his behavior and appearance, they
took him to the police station. Kaspar spent the next two months in prison, where he hardly
spoke and refused all food except for bread and water. Some people assumed that Kaspar
had grown up alone in the forest, like a wild animal. But gradually, a different picture emerged.
Kaspar said he had spent his whole childhood in a small dark cell. He had never seen the
world outside or left his cell. He had never met or spoken to another human being. The cell
was empty apart from a small bed and one toy-a wooden horse. He claimed that he had
found bread and water in his cell every morning. According to Kaspar’s account, a mysterious
man had begun to call on him shortly before his release. The man never showed his face.
Kaspar became well-known throughout Germany and in other countries too, and people found
his ascinating. Some suggested that Kaspar was the son of a rich and powerful man-a prince
perhaps-who wanted to keep his identity secret. A schoolteacher called Friedrich Daumer met
Kaspar and agreed to look after him. Daumer taught him various subjects and encouraged
Kaspar’s talent for drawing.
One day in 1829, Kaspar was found with a knife wound to his head. He claimed that a man
with a hood over his face had attacked him-the same man who had brought him to
Nuremberg. It wasn’t a serious injury, and Kaspar got over it. But in 1833, Hauser came home
with a deep knife wound in his chest, saying someone had attacked him in a garden. Three

days later, Kaspar died from the wound. Just before he died, Kaspar told the police that his
attacker had given him a
bag, so the police went to the garden and looked for it. They found it, with a note inside. The
note was in mirror writing and said in German: “I want to tell you about myself. I come from
the Bavarian border, on the river.”
Over the years, books have been written about Kaspar’s stories and various historians have
looked into them. Most have concluded that the stories were untrue and that Kaspar Hauser
was a liar who killed himself (possibly by mistake). But for some people, Kaspar Hauser’s life
and death remain one of the most mysterious stories in history.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions from 53 to 62.
History books recorded that the first film with sound was The Jazz Singer in 1927. But sound
films, or talkies, did not suddenly appear after years of silent screenings. From the earliest
public performances in 1896, films were accompanied by music and sound effects. These
were produced by a single pianist, a small band, or a full-scale orchestra; large movie
theatres could buy sound-effect machines. Research into sound that was reproduced at
exactly at the same time as the pictures – called “synchronized sound” – began soon after
the very first films were shown. With synchronized sound, characters on the movie screen
could sing and speak. As early as 1896, the newly invented gramophone, which played a
large disc carrying music and dialogue, was used as a sound system. The biggest
disadvantage was that the sound and pictures could become unsynchronized if, for example,
the gramophone needle jumped or if the speed of the projector changed. This system was
only effective for a single song or dialogue sequence.
In the “sound-on-film” system, sound was recorded as a series of marks on celluloid which
could be read by an optical sensor. These signals would be placed on the film alongside the
image, guaranteeing synchronization. Short feature films were produced in this way as early
as 1922. This system eventually brought us “talking pictures”.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet
to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
ACADEMICS AREN’T THE PROBLEM
Studies about how students use their time might shed light on whether they face increased

academic and financial pressures compared with earlier eras.
Based on data about how students are spending time, academic or financial pressures don’t
seem to be greater now than a generation ago.
The data show that full-time students in all types of colleges study much less now than they
did a generation ago - a full 10 hours a week less. Students are also receiving significantly
higher grades. So it appears that academic pressures are, in fact, considerably lower than
they used to be.
The time-use data don’t suggest that students feel greater financial pressures, either. When
the time savings and lower opportunity costs are factored in, college appears less expensive
for most students than it was in the 1960s. And though there are now full-time students
working to pay while in college, they study less even when paid work choices are held
constantly.
In other words, full-time students do not appear to be studying less in order to work more.
They appear to be studying less and spending the extra time on leisure activities or fun. It
seems hard to imagine that students feeling increased financial pressures would respond by
taking more leisure.
Based on how students are spending their time then, it doesn’t look as though academic or
financial pressures are greater now than a generation ago. The time-use data don’t speak
directly to social pressures, and it may well be that these have become more intense lately.

In one recent set of data, students reported spending more than 23 hours per week either
socializing with friends or playing on the computer for fun. Social activities, in person or on
computer, would seem to have become the major focus of campus life. It is hard to tell what
kinds of pressures would be associated with this change.
Câu 25: The study’s conclusion that students’ workload now is not greater than before is
based on_________.
A. what students achieve with greater load B. how students work through college
C. how students spend their time
D. what college demands from students

Câu 26: Research studies have shown that pressures put on students nowadays are
__________.

B. getting ever greater
C. not greater than the past
D. much greater than the past
Câu 27: Students get higher grades as__________.
A. academic workload appears less demanding
B. academic workload appears more attractive
C. students study much harder
D. college’s facilities are much better
Câu 28: According to the author, the fact that students have more time for leisure is a proof
that_____.
A. they are active with extra-curricular activities
B. they cannot find extra jobs
C. financial pressure on students is not a problem
D. academic work disinterests them

A. ever more expensive
B. much more expensive

to indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Early peoples had no need of engineering works to supply their water. Hunters and nomads
camped near natural sources of fresh water, and populations were so sparse that pollution of
the water supply was not a serious problem. After community life developed and agricultural
villages became urban centres, the problem of supplying water became important for
inhabitants of a city, as well as for irrigation of the farms surrounding the city. Irrigation works
were known in prehistoric times, and before 2000 BC the rulers of Babylonia and Egypt
constructed systems of dams and canals to impound the flood waters of the Euphrates and
Nile rivers, controlling floods and providing irrigation water throughout the dry season. Such
irrigation canals also supplied water for domestic purposes. The first people to consider the
sanitation of their water supply were the ancient Romans, who constructed a vast system of
aqueducts to bring the clean waters of the Apennine Mountains into the city and built basins
and filters along these mains to ensure the clarity of the water. The construction of such
extensive water-supply systems declined when the Roman Empire disintegrated, and for
several centuries local springs and wells formed the main source of domestic and industrial
water.
The invention of the force pump in England in the middle of the 16th century greatly extended
the possibilities of development of water-supply systems. In London, the first pumping
waterworks was completed in 1562; it pumped river water to a reservoir about 37 m above the
level of the River Thames and from the reservoir the water was distributed by gravity, through
lead pipes, to buildings in thevicinity.
Increased per-capita demand has coincided with water shortages in many countries.
Southeast England, for example, receives only 14 per cent of Britain's rainfall, has 30 per cent
of its population, and has experienced declining winter rainfall since the 1980s.

In recent years a great deal of interest has been shown in the conversion of seawater to fresh
water to provide drinking water for very dry areas, such as the Middle East. Several different
processes, including distillation, electrodialysis, reverse osmosis, and direct-freeze
evaporation, have been developed for this purpose. Some of these processes have been

used in large facilities in the United States. Although these processes are successful, the cost
of treating seawater is much higher than that for treating fresh water.

Read the following passage and then choose the best answer A, B, C or D.
Glass is a remarkable substance made from simplest raw materials. It can be colored or colorless,
monochrome or polychrome, transparent, translucent or opaque. It is lightweight impermeable to liquids,
readily cleaned and reused, durable yet fragile, and often very beautiful. Glass can be decorated in multiple
ways and its optical properties are exceptional. In all its myriad forms-as table ware, containers, in architecture
and design-glass represents a major achievement in the history of technological developments.
Since the Bronze Age about 3,000 B.C, glass has been used for making various kinds of objects. It was
first made from a mixture of silica, line and an alkali such as soda or potash, and these remained the basic
ingredients of glass until the development of lead glass in the seventeenth century. When heated, the mixture
becomes soft, and malleable and can be formed by various techniques into a vast array of shapes and sizes.
The homogeneous mass is thus formed by melting then cooling to create glass, but in contrast to most
materials formed in this way (metals, for instance), glass lacks the crystalline structure normally associated
with solids, and instead retains the random molecular structure of a liquid. In effect, as molten glass cools, it
progressively stiffens until rigid, but does so without setting up a network of interlocking
crystals customarily associated with that process. This is why glass shatters so easily when dealt a blow, why

glass deteriorates over time, especially when exposed to moisture, and why glassware must be slowly
reheated and uniformly cooled after manufacture to release internal stresses induced by uneven cooling.
Another unusual feature of glass is the manner in which its viscosity changes as it turns from a cold substance
into a hot, ductile liquid. Unlike metals that flow or “freeze” at specific temperatures, glass progressively softens
as the temperature rises, going through varying stages of malleability until it flows like a thick syrup. Each
stage of malleability allows the glass to be manipulated into various forms, by different techniques, and if

suddenly cooled the object retains the stage achieved at that point. Glass is thus amenable to a greater
number of heat-forming techniques than most other materials.
Question 45: Why does the author list the characteristics of glass in paragraph 1?
A. To show the versatility of glass
B. To demonstrate how glass evolved

A. They are transparent

B. They were the same for centuries

C. They are very heavy

D. They are liquid

rigid substances?
A. It has varying physical properties

B. It has an interlocking crystal network

C. It has unusually low melting temperature

D. It has a random molecular structure.

Question 51: What must be done to release the internal stresses that build up in glass products during
manufacture?
A. The glass must be cooled quickly
B. The glass must be reheated and evenly cooled.
C. The glass must be kept moist until cooled
D. The glass must be shaped to its desired form immediately.
Question 52: The word “induced” in paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to…………….

Question 54: According to the passage, why can glass be more easily shaped into specific forms than can
metals?
A. It has better optical properties

B. It retains heat while its viscosity changes.
C. It gradually becomes softer as its temperature rises.
D. It resists breaking when heated.
Read the following passage and then choose the best answer A, B, C or D.
Comets are bodies that move around in space. They are something likes stars or small planets that move
around the sun. Comets are surrounded by gases and the sun makes those gases look very bright. Dust can
get caught in the gas around the comet and make the comet look like it has a tails.
Halley's Comet is the most famous comet, but we can't see it very often. In fact, it can only be seen from the

Earth when it moves close the sun. This means that this beautiful comet only comes into our sky every 77
years or so. The last time Halley's Comet was invisible from the Earth was in 1991. Did you see it?
Halley's Comet was named after the English astronomer Edmond Halley. An astronomer studies the star and
planets in the solar system. Edmond Halley was born in London, England, in 1656. He studies astronomy at
Oxford University. In 1676, he left the university to study the astronomy of the Southern Hemisphere. He wrote
a brook about the arrangement of the stars in the sky and the movement of the planets. He made the first
accurate map of the stars we see in the sky. He also observed the moon and studied how the Moon affects the
ocean tides. He helped find a way to measure distances in space. This measurement was used by other
scientists to learn about the size of our solar system and the distances of many star and planets from the
Earth.
Halley especially liked to study comets. He read about comets and observed them in the sky. He learned about
the way they moved around the Sun — each comet follows a different path around the Sun and travels at its
own speed. The path and speed of a body as it moves in space is called its orbit. Halley calculated the orbits of
comets that he read about or saw himself. He found the orbits for twenty-four comets.
Halley also noticed that the paths of a comet seen in 1531 and of a comet seen in 1607 were identical to the
path of a comet he had observed in 1682. He concluded that these three comets were, in fact, the same
comet. Halley predicted that the comet would come again in 1758, and it did! This comet was named “Halley’s
Comet” and can be seen from Earth. The first reports of this comet in history were made in 240 B.C. by
Chinese astronomers, so we know that it has been orbiting the Sun to more than 2,000 years. Halley’s Comet
is not the only comet in our sky, but it is the only one that appears regularly and can be predicted. It is also one
of the brightest comets, and people can see it without a telescope.
Like comets, the Earth also travels around the Sun. Sometimes the orbit of t Earth passes through the path of
Hailey’s Comet. Like comets, the Earth also travels around the Sun. Sometimes the orbit of the Earth passes
