1. INTRODUCTION
1.1. PURPOSE
This method statement describes the methodology for brick wall and plastering on brick walls of
Factory No.1.
Brickwork will be carried out after all constructions of relevant concrete structures such as slab,
columns completed. The concrete work constructions were covered by the other submittals,
therefore they will no longer be discussed in this method statement.
Most of brickwork are for walls of Utilities Building and will be applied from the ground to 1st floor of
building. All walls will close the spaces between concrete structures of column to column and slab to
slab, therefore they are classified in non-load-bearing walls.
There will be some openings on the brick wall at location of doors and windows. Around these
openings, reinforcement concrete stiffener and lintel beams will be cast before to carry out the brick
walls.
After brick walls have been completed, the plastering will be applied on both sides of them, if any.

8. PREPARATION WORKS
A. Masonry Units
Clay brick to be used for brick wall have been approved by Consultant. Product data, certificate,
test report have been submitted and approved and no longer discussed in this method statement.
Dimension of solid brick and hollow brick are of 4x8x18 cm and 8x8x18 (cm) respectively. Half
brick unit will be created by saw cut.
HOLLOW BRICK
SOLID BRICK
All brick units shall be moistened by water 1- 2 hours before executing the construction.
C. Mock-ups
Before proceed construction of brick wall for Factory No.1, contractor will provide a sample
wall mock-up for all types of masonry units and plastering.
Build each sample wall panel mock-up on the site of full thickness and approximately 1.2m
high by 1.2m long, indicating the proposed range of color, texture and workmanship to be
expected in the completed work.
D. Scaffolding preparation:
+ Scaffolding will be installed aside the wall and be propped/braced securely.
+ Install platform and handrail on each story of scaffolding.
+ Provide the ladder on scaffolding from the ground to the working level.
9. CONSTRUCTION METHOD
9.1. Brick work:
1. Mortar & mixing mortar
Sand for mixed mortar shall be natural sand free from any deleterious materials such as
clay, flaky or elongated particles, mica, shale or other laminated materials, organic impurities,
iron pyrites. Sand shall be clean, hard, durable, crushed. It shall be thoroughly washed and all
dirt, shells etc. removed before use.
Water for brick work shall be clean and uncontaminated potable water from the city
main supply or any other approved source free from harmful matter.
Mortar type to be used shall be sand-cement mortar, class mark #100 (28days compressive
strength 10 Mpa) with its proportion: 1 part of cement: 3 part of sand in volume
The mortar proportion will be verified with the result of trial mix on site and testing prior to be
use.

Mortar will be mixed by mixer which has capacity of 100 liters on site. Material of mortar will
be measured in containers with defined volume to maintain control and accuracy of proportion.
Mix by placing one-half the water and sand in operating mixer. Then add cement and
remainder of sand and water. Mix batch for not less than 3 minutes after all ingredients are in the
mixer.
Workability or consistency of mortar on the board shall be sufficiently wet to be worked under
the trowel. Water for tempering shall be available on the scaffolding at all time. Mortar which has
begun “set” two (2) hours after initial mixing will be discarded.
2. Wall ties (Dowel bars):
Dowel bars shall be installed at the spacing of 400mm for each skin of wall (one layer for
single wall and 2 layers for Double wall).
Wall ties are made of steel bars of D6, 400mm long (100mm embedded in concrete, 300 mm
exposed). The diameter of drilled holes in RC items for installation shall be 8.0mm
Wall ties will be inserted in the columns by drilling and applying of bonding agent (Sikadur

Clean top surface of concrete slab of dirt, projection and laitance before starting masonry
construction. Clean brick of all dust and dirt before laying.
Setting out by marking on slab and column the border lines of the wall with theodolite.
Spray water on sub-base before starting construction. Laying cement mortar 12mm thick as
damp-proof course on the slab.
b) Brick wall forming:
Laying brick course by course to build the wall. On every course of straight wall as well as at
intersection of them, their brick units will be staggered with the previous course to avoid
coincidence of vertical joint in brick block.
The first course and top course of brick walls shall be of solid bricks.
Mortar will be laid to form joints between courses of brick . The width of horizontal and
vertical joints shall be 10.0 mm wide and joint shall be fully filled with cement mortar and
compressed by steel trowel.
Horizontal joints shall be level and neatly pointed around as the work proceeds within
tolerance of ±10 mm / 5m. Vertical joints shall be plumb and in alignment from top to bottom
of wall within a tolerance of ±5 mm / 3m.
•
Single Skin Brick Walls
The bricks for single skin walls shall be hollow bricks and the wall thickness shall be of
80.0mm thick.
•
Double Skin Brick Walls
Bricklaying shall be 1 course of headers to 5 courses of stretchers in order.
The gap between skins shall be filled up with mortar before laying the headers.

All work shall be carried up in a uniform manner with no one portion being raised more than 1
meter above another at one time. With the surface of walls which are subject to plastering or
tiling, the joints are to be raked out as the work proceeds to form key for the plaster.
Prior to resuming masonry work, remove loose units and loose mortar, clean exposed surfaces
of set masonry and wet units lightly.
c) Application:
Brick will be generally laid in running bond.
-
Form bed joints of thick layer of mortar slightly furrowed or battered.
Bevel or pyramid the bed mortar.
Form head joints by applying a full coat of mortar on the brick to be laid.
First layer will be solid brick.
Lay closure brick with mortar on each bedding surface of unit to be laid and units in place.
Place brick carefully without colliding to brick previous laid.
Strike flush joints. Tool vertical joints first then brush joints to remove all loose and excess
mortar.
Repeat this sequence for next course.
d) Cleaning, curing and protection:
-
Remove immediately concrete scum, mortar and grout stain on the wall during construction.
-
After the wall is constructed it should not be saturated with water for curing or any other
purposes.

-
When or where the atmosphere is dry, the masonry wall shall have its surface dampened with
water during a curing period for the mortar of 3 (Three) days.
-
Protect completed work:
(a) Keep completed walls clean and protect from staining.
(b) Cover top of walls with waterproof covering or membrane to prevent rain or
mortar stain.
(c) Do not apply uniform loads for at least 12 hours or concentrated loads for at least
72 hours after masonry is constructed.
4. RC lintel & siffener
On the wall, there will be some openings to fix the door or window later. Dimensions of these
openings will be set by adding the dimensions of door (or window) a tolerance of about 2,5 cm
for installation.
Openings on brick wall will be formed and supported by Reinforced concrete stiffener and
lintel around its boundary.
Stiffener beams and columns shall also be provided to wall for each 15 m2:
Where the length of wall is longer than 5.0m (Stiffener columns)
Where the height of wall is higher than 3.0m (Stiffener beams)
Typical section of stiffener (columns and beams) in Factory No.1 building will be:
For single skin: Dimensions: 8 x 20 (cm), reinforced with main bar of 2D12 and stirrup

Step 5: Preparation and casting stiffener columns & beams
- During laying of brick wall, the space for stiffeners will be formed.
- Install the steel rebar connecting to the starter bars installed during casting ground
beams/slab.
- Fix the rebar in the right position with spacers and tie wires.
- Apply the formwork both sides of wall and fix them securely.
