1. What are collocations?
1.1. Definition
Collocation is ‘the grammar of words’ – how words go together with other words. Collocation tells us
which words can come before or after other words.
Examples:
 Verbs with SUN: The sun rises, comes up, comes out, shines, sets, then goes down.
 Adjectives with ROAD: Roads can be clear or busy; they can be wide or narrow; they can be icy;
they can be main roads.
 Verbs with BOTTLE: You can shake a bottle, then open it. You can pass a bottle to someone.
You can recycle bottles.
1.2. Types of collocations
- Adjective + noun:
 Jean always wears red or yellow or some other bright colour.
 We had a brief chat about the exams but didn’t have time to discuss them properly.
 Unemployment is a major problem for the government at the moment.
- Noun + verb:
 The economy boomed in the 1990s.
 The two companies merged in 2003 and now form one very large corporation.
 The Internet has created opportunities for our business.
 The price increase poses a problem for us.
- Noun + noun:
 As Sam read the lies about him, he felt a surge of anger.
 Every parent feels a sense of pride when their child does well or wins something.


 I felt a pang of nostalgia when I saw the old photos of the village where I grew up.
- Verb + preposition:
 As Jack went on stage to receive his gold medal for the judo competitiion you could see his
parents swelling with pride.
 I was filled with horror when I read the newspaper report of the explosion.
- Verb + adverb:
 She pulled steadily on the rope and helped him to safety.
 He placed the beautiful vase gently in the window ledge.
 ‘I love you and want to marry you,’ Derek whispered softly to Marsha.
 She smiled proudly as she looked at the photos of her new grandson.

Adverb + adjective:
 They are happily married.
 I am fully aware that there are serious problems.
 Harry was blissfully unaware that he was in danger.

2. What are fixed expressions?

A fixed expression (Quán ngữ) is a form of expression that has taken on a more specific meaning than
the words themselves. It is the standard way of expressing a concept or an idea; it is something we
ordinarily say in certain situations.
Examples:





Pleased to meet you
All of a sudden
On the other hand
May as well

3. What are idioms?
An idiom (Thành ngữ) is an expression that cannot be understood from the meanings of its separate
words but that has a separate meaning of its own.
Examples:






A can of worms (a complicated problem)
To rain cats and dogs (to rain heavily)
To be out for the count (to be sleeping peacefully)
Rub someone the wrong way (annoy or bother someone)
Pull someone’s leg (tease someone by trying to make them believe something that is not true
