California Geologic Regions
and Hazards Presentation
DAY 2
Today we will learn
about 7 provinces that
make up the north and
south part of the
state.
We will start in the
south
and finish in
the north.
Let’s begin . . .

Description of Province:
The Transverse Ranges are a steep eastwest trending series of mountain ranges.
Transverse Ranges
Intense folding of the petroleum
rich sedimentary rock makes this
an important oil producing area.
Transverse Ranges
The Transverse Ranges
extend to the Pacific Ocean.
Transverse Ranges
The Transverse Ranges also
include the island group
of San Miguel, Santa Rosa,
and Santa Cruz
islands.
What geologic
hazards would
you expect to
find in this
province?
Hazards:
• Earthquakes
• Landslides
• Floods
Along the Coast:
•Coastal Erosion
•Tsunamis
Specific Event:
Earthquake
Santa Barbara 1925, June
Magnitude 6.3
13 dead; $8 million in property damage
Specific Event:
Landslide at La Conchita January 10, 2005
Destroyed or seriously damaged 36 houses and
killed 10 people.

hazards
to your

Peninsular Ranges
Description of Province:
The Peninsular Ranges are a series of
northwest trending ranges that are parallel
to the San Andreas Fault Zone.
Peninsular Ranges
Like the Sierra Nevada, the Peninsular Ranges are
composed of granite (once magma) intruded into
older metamorphic rocks.

Los Angeles
is located
in the

Ranges.
Peninsular Ranges
The Peninsular Range also includes the
island group of Santa Catalina, Santa Barbara, San
Clemente and San Nicolas islands.
