Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary Rocks
Sedimentary rocks form in 1 of 3 ways:
1. Clastic Sedimentary Rocks- made of pieces and grains of other rocks. Material
such as sand or mud
-usually deposited in water
Conglomerate
sandstone
Sedimentary Rocks
2. Chemical Sedimentary Rocks- deposited in water
from chemicals and minerals in the water.
-limestone is deposited in water from calcite
Sedimentary Rocks
• 3. Organic sedimentary rocks- made up of remains of
plants or animals.
– Chalk is made from tiny shells
– Coal is made from ancient plants
Other sedimentary Features
1. Fossils- can be very common in sedimentary rocks
2. Nodules- (concretions) are ball-shaped rocks formed
around a hard center object such as a sand grain
3. Geodes- hollowed out nodules with crystals filling the
center area. Crystals are usually quartz
