 The use of modal verbs

must/have to,
mustn’t, should/ought to for
obligation, prohibition and advice in
the context of social issues (rules and
restrictions).


Exercise 1. Correct the errors in verb forms. Write
the correct verb form in your copybooks.

MODALS: can/could, may/might, must,
shall/ should, will/ would
are followed by the bare infinitive.
 don’t take –s in the 3 person singular
either in modal or main verb.
 don’t take –ing or –ed suffixes.
 No do/does for questions and negations
 come before the subject in questions and
are followed by not in negations.
 don’t have tenses in the normal sense.
