Ever since humans have inhabited the earth, they have made us of various forms of communication. Generally, this
expression of thoughts and feelings has been in the form of oral speech. When there is a language barrier, communication
accomplished through sign language in which motions stand for letters, words, and ideas. Tourists, the deaf, and the mute
have had to resort to this form of expression. Many of these symbols of whole words are very picturesque and exact and
can be used internationally; spelling, however, cannot.
Body language transmits ideas or thoughts by certain actions, either intentionally or unintentionally. A wink can be
a way of flirting or indicating that the party is only joking. A nod signifies approval, while shaking the head indicates a
negative reaction. Other forms of nonlinguistic language can be found in Braille ( a system of raised dots read with the
fingertips), signal flags, Morse code, and smoke signals. Road maps and picture signs also guide, warn, and instruct
people.

Shaking hands originated in medieval times .In those days, when a man came on a stranger , he would often
automatically reach for his sword with his right hand, in case he had to use the weapon to defend himself. Sometimes,

could be laid aside .Then, the two parties extended their right hands to show they had no weapons , and clasped them.
This was the beginning of the handshake.
The custom of shaking hands is not a universal one. In the Orient, people have ,for centuries, clasped their own hands in

My aunt is one of those people who can talk to anyone about anything. If she goes to a party where she doesn't know
any of the people, she just walks up to the first person that she sees and introduces herself. And yet she doesn't seem to
talk about deeply important things like politics or religion. She always starts off with something very obvious like the
other person's job. Very soon she's talking as if she's known the other person for years. I asked her once what her secret
was. She said that the most important thing in a conversation was listening. People love to talk about themselves, so if
you allow them to do so, it's very easy to keep a conversation going. You have to listen very carefully and ask questions.
And you have to look interested, too. So don't keep looking at other things in the room while you're talking to someone.
Another thing that I've noticed is that she only pays people compliments. She says: T like your hair. Which hairdresser
do you go to?' or 'You look very well. Have you been on holiday?' Friendly messages like this seem to provide an easy
way into a conversation.

they have to ask everyone in the company. When they say 'Yes' it may mean ‘I understand', not ‘I agree', and when they

Read the passage carefully and choose the correct answer.

When people plan to marry, they expect to find in their partner not only a lover but a friend also. They find a person
with whom they can share their opinions, their emotions, thoughts and fears. In marriage we are looking for a partner who
will be able to understand our values, our likes and dislikes.
If a man and a woman are born and raised in the same country, most likely they are familiar with the same songs,
movies, jokes, books and life in general. They basically have the same roots. In the case of a western man and foreign
woman family everything is more complicated and requires much more patience and understanding from both spouses.
On one hand each of the partners has an opportunity to learn a great deal about the other's country, culture, traditions and
life styles which can be very interesting. On the other hand it can be very disappointing if there is the inability to
understand your partner's excitements and frustrations. For example, you are watching the television and suddenly you
see a famous actor or singer, or other type of an artist whose name you have grown up with. Maybe this artist was an idol
for your parents and the music of this artist was often played in your house when you were a child. Unfortunately you
realize that your wife is unable to understand your feelings because she has no idea who this artist is. Her eyes are
absolutely empty because she has never even heard the song before. You feel rather disappointed! Remember that your
wife has the same situation with you. You do not know her country's songs, her country's famous actors, her books. She
has her own memories and in actuality, for her, everything is much more difficult than it is for you. At least, you live in
your own country where everybody can understand you. She lives in completely strange surroundings, where she has
nobody to share her feelings with, except you.
Do some research and learn about your wife's country, culture and lifestyles. Talk with her, ask her questions, get to
know what songs she likes, what movies and books are of interest to her. The Internet will give you a great opportunity to
find anything! Tell her about your country's culture, let her listen to the music that you like, rent a movie for her that left
you with great impression. Let her understand you better through the things that you like. Patience and time will help you
to fight cultural differences.

Read the passage below and choose one correct answer for each question:
Many people think that we can learn a lot about the culture of a foreign country simply by living in that country.
However, this is not necessarily true. Often, the longer we stay in a foreign country, the more we realize how little we
actually know about the culture of that country.
Books and talks about other people’s culture can even be dangerous because they concentrate on cultural
differences and exaggerate national character, and sometimes a lot of information they contain is untrue.
In a study recently carried out in Britain, people were asked to make a list of anything that they thought was typical
ofBritainand would interest a foreign visitor there. Most mentioned Shakespeare, the Queen, village inns, English folk
dancing, English castles, and fish chips wrapped in newspaper. Although all of these characters can be found in British
culture, they do not show the real interests of ordinary British people: (they are, in fact, simply stereotype - that is, general
character which people wrongly think are typical). What is surprising is that they were suggested by British people
themselves as representing their culture. If people have such a wrong impression of their own culture, how much false
would their impression of their culture be!

IV. Read the passage below and choose one correct answer for each question:
Culture is a strong part of people’s lives. It influences their views, their values, their humor, their hopes, their
loyalties, and their worries and fears. If you are from New Mexico or Montana, if your parents are Cambodian, French
Canadian, or Native American, if you are German Catholic or African-American, if you are Jewish or Mormon, if you are
a boy or a girl, if you are a mixture of cultures your culture has affected you. So when you are working with people and
building relationships with them, it helps to have some perspective and understanding of their cultures.
But as we explore culture, it’s also important to remember how much we have in common. A person who grew up
in Tibet, will probably see the world very differently than someone who grew up in Manhattan - but both people know
what it is like to wake up in the morning and look forward to the adventures that of the day. We are all human beings. We
all love deeply, want to learn, have hopes and dreams, and have experienced pain and fear.
At the same time, we can’t pretend that our cultures and differences don’t matter. We can’t gloss over differences
and pretend they don’t exist, wishing that we could be alike. And we can’t pretend that people that discrimination doesn’t
exist.

People have very different views of what a multicultural society or community should be like or could be like. In
the past few decades there has been a lot of discussion about what it means to live and work together in a society that is
diverse as ours. People struggle with different visions of a fair, equitable, moral, and harmonious society.

Napoleon Bonaparte’s ambition to control all area around the Meditererranean Sea led him and his
French soldiers to Egypt. After losing a naval battle, they were forced to to remain there for three years. In
1799, while constructing a fort, a soldier discovered a piece of stele ( stone pillar bearing an inscription ) known
as the Rosetta stone. This famous stone, which would enventually lead to deciphering of ancient Egyptian
hieroglyphics dating to 3100 B.C, was written in there languages : hieroglyphics (picture writing ) demotic ( a
shorthand version of heiroglyphics ) and Greek. Scientists discovered that the characters, unlike those in
English, could be written from right to left and in other directions as well.
Twenty-three years after discovery of the Rosetta stone, Jean Francois Champollion, a French
philologist, fluent in several languages, was able to decipher the first word-Ptolemy- name of an Egyptian ruler.
This name was written inside an oval called a ‘’ cartouch’’. Further investigation revealed that cartouches
contained names of important people of that period. Champollion painstakingly continued his search and was
able to increas his growing list of known phonetic signs. He and an English man, Thomas Young , worked

In the past, both men and women were expected to be married at quite young ages. Marriages were
generally arranged by parents and family, with their children having little chance to say no in the matter. In the
past it was not surprising to find that a bride and groom had only just met on the day of their engagement or
marriage.
In modern Vietnam, this has changed completely as people choose their own marriage-partners based on
love, and in consideration primarily to their own needs and wants. Moreover early marriage is quite illegal.
The traditional Vietnamese wedding is one of the most important of traditional Vietnamese occasions.
Regardless of westernization, many of the age-old customs practiced in a traditional Vietnamese wedding
continue to be celebrated by both Vietnamese in Vietnam and overseas, often combining both western and
eastern elements. Besides the wedding ceremony, there is also an engagement ceremony which takes place
usually half a year or so before the wedding. Due to the spiritual nature of the occasion, the date and time of the
marriage ceremony are decided in advance by a fortune teller. The traditional Vietnamese wedding consists of
an extensive array of ceremonies: the first is the ceremony to ask permission to receive the bride, the second is
the procession to receive the bride (along with the ancestor ceremony at her house), the third is to bring the
bride to the groom's house for another ancestor ceremony and to welcome her into the family, then the last is a
wedding banquet. The number of guests in attendance at these banquets is huge, usually in the hundreds.

Several special dishes are served. Guests are expected to bring gifts, often money, which the groom and bride at

THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
The golden Gate Bridge is one of the symbols of the United States of America. It is located in San Francisco,
California, and spans the Golden Gate strait-a mile wide strait that connects the Pacific Ocean to the San francisco Bay.
It is sure one of the most beautiful bridges in the world, and also one of the tallest (the height of a bridge is the
height of the towers ). The bridge as it is today was designed by architects Irving and Gertrude Morrow. However thier art

deco project was not the first Golden Gate Bridge. The original plans for the bridge were drawn in 1961, but they were of
a very complicated and ugly structure, certainly not something could be ever proud of.
The bridge was a true experiment in its time, such a long suspension bridge had never been tried before. It had the
hightest towers, the thickest cables and the largest underwater foundations ever built. The foundations were a real
problem, because they had to be cast in a depth of more than 100 feet. Extreme depth wasn't the sole problem. The real
challenge lay in the sinking of the piers in the violent waves of the open sea, which was thought to be almost impossible
the construction began in 1933 and was finished in 1937,when the bridge opened to pedestrians. ( It was opened to cars
one years later ). The bridge was finished ahead of schedule and cost much less than was estimated.Today the Golden

Gate Bridge has a main span of 4,200 feet ( almost a mile ) and a total length of 8,981 feet. The towers supporting the
huge cables rise 746 feet above the water. Each steel cable is 7,650 long and has a diameter of 36 inches.
''International orange '' is the color the bridge has always been painted. The architects chose it because it blends
well with the span's natural setting. However, if the Navy had had its way, the bridge would have been painted black with
yellow stripes-in favor of greater visibility for passing ships. There are fog horns to let passing ships know where the
bridge is, and aircraf beacon on the tops of the towers to prevent planes from crashing into them.
The Golden Gate Bridge is the first sight for many people approaching the United States by boat. It is almost the
West Coast's '' Stautue of Liberty'' and is something everyone should at least once.
