E. Greygg
 A grey area – an area of a subject or situation that is not
clear and does not fit into a group, therefore is difficult to
define.
e.g: Many people think that they know what right and
wrong are, but on closer examination, it’s usually a grey
area.

 Grey matter – of intelligence or mental powers
e.g: Alicia is really intelligent. She has more grey matter
than half a dozen of students her age.

 (men in) Grey suits – people working in politics, law,...
who have power but are unknown to the public.
e.g: The prime minister was removed from Ten Downing
Street by men in grey suits.

F. Pink
 In the pink – in very good health or excellent physical
condition.
e.g: It was a miracle that after his terrible pneumonia, he


was back in the pink of health.

 See pink elephants/spiders/snakes – see things that
are not really there because you are drunk.
e.g: Phil was so drunk last night that he said something
about seeing pink elephants.

 Be tickled pink – be very pleased or amused.
e.g: I was tickled pink by the compliment.

 In the red – in debt.

e.g: The phone company found itself about $2 billion in
the red.
 Not have a red cent – have no money at all.
e.g: Can you lend me some money? I don’t have a
red cent at the moment.
 On red alert – prepared for an emergency or for sth

dangerous to happen.
e.g: Following the bombing in London, our family was
on red alert.
 (as) Red as a beetroot/beet – with red cheeks
because of feeling angry, embarrased or hot.
e.g: Her cheeks was as red as a beetroot when I
complimented her on the dress that she wore.
 The red carpet – a very special welcome given to an
important visitor.
e.g: When I went to my girlfriend’s house for the first
time, her family really put out the red carpet for me.
 A red face – embarrasment.
e.g: There are going to be a lot of red faces at the
bank when they discovered their mistake.
 A red herring – a fact which sb introduces into a
discussion because they want to distract people from
the main point.
e.g: Interesting as it may seem, the French agriculture
is just a red herring. We need to discuss our country’s
situation.
 Red ink – debts, losses or money that is owed.
e.g: The health care industry is bleeding red ink.
 Red in tooth and claw – involving opposition or
competition that is violent and without pity.

 (like) a red rag to a bull/like waving a red flag in
front of/at a bull – certain to make a particular
person angry or violent.
e.g: Don’t mention anything about politics to my mum.
It’s like waving a red flag at a bull.
 Red tape – official rules that seem more complicated
than necessary and prevent things from being done
quickly.
e.g: Because of the red tape I have to go through
when importing a car, my family hasn’t got one.
 See red – suddenly become very angry.
e.g: Abusing children makes me see red.
 Paint the town red – going to bars, clubs, etc to relax
yourself.
e.g: After a long and stressful exam, it’s time for us to
paint the town red.
 Catch sb red-handed – sb finds out sb is doing a
wrong thing.
e.g: The thief was caught red-handed when trying to
unplug the computer.
 A red-letter day – a very special day which is
remembered because sth important happened.
e.g: Today is a red-letter day for my parents. It was

the day they met each other in Russia.
 The red-light district – the part of a city where
prostitutes work and sex shops are found.
e.g: His prudish nature was tested when we came
across the red-light district.
