Their Dreams Came True

team won the game!
Nomar took a big swing. Crack! The
ball flew deep into the stands. It was a

towering home run!

Mia was always polishing her skills.

Mia was always polishing her skills.

Mia’s Dream
Can you guess how old Mia was
when she first played soccer? She was
only five years old.
Mia always loved soccer and
watched it on television. She played as
often as she could. And she practiced,
practiced, practiced.
If there were no girl teams, Mia
played with boys. She was shy, but a
tough player.

Mia’s teammates helped
her when she was hurt.

Garrett was Mia’s brother and her
hero. He taught her how to play soccer.
Mia played in a soccer league. In the
league, she learned how to pass and how
to score. Most important, she learned
teamwork. Mia was there for her team,
and the team was there for her too.
4

Mia’s hard work helped her team
win games. She is in the National
Soccer Hall of Fame. Mia’s dream of
becoming a great soccer player came
true. Today, she has many fans.

Mia’s team won two Olympic gold medals.

Nomar’s Dream
When Nomar was young, he was a
good soccer player. But he loved to play
baseball even more. He threw the ball
straight and fast.
Later, Nomar played in the Olympics,
and he was also Rookie of the Year.

6

Nomar is
an amazing
baseball
player.

Many days Nomar was hurt and
could not play, but he kept trying.
Other players helped him. They called
him Spiderman. Nomar almost always
caught the ball, and many times he
slammed the ball and hit home runs.
7

Nomar is also a hero. Once he saw
two women drowning. What did he do?
Without pausing, he jumped into the
water and saved them. That’s his style!
Nomar finds homeless children food,
clothing, and a place to live.

Mia says sick children are her heroes.

Mia and Nomar Today
Today, Mia does not play soccer, but
Nomar still plays baseball. They have
two girls. The couple work to help
other children.
There is a special reason that Mia and
Nomar want to help children. Mia’s
brother got sick and died a few years
ago. So now Mia works hard helping
sick children.
9

Today, Mia and Nomar want to help
others reach their dreams.
If you work hard, maybe you can
reach your dream. Then, like Mia and
Nomar, you can work to help others.
That’s a great way to have all your
dreams come true.

Mia and Nomar care
about their community.
