WRITE A PARAGRAPH

I. What is a paragraph? (Đoạn văn là gì?)
A paragraph is a basic unit of organization in writing in which a group of related sentences develops one main
idea. A paragraph can be as short as one sentence or as long as ten sentences. The number of sentences is
unimportant; however, the paragraph should be long enough to develop the main idea clearly. A paragraph is
also one part of letter or an essay.

Model: Benefits of travelling
Nowadays, people enjoy travelling as it brings them a large number of significant advantages
such as increasing human’s knowledge and helping reduce stress. Firstly, we can enlarge our cultural,
historical and geographical knowledge. It is true that when we visit a tourist attraction, it means we have a
wonderful opportunity to observe and experience something decent and gorgeous. We will be able to know
more about the unique customs, colorful cultural activities, historical events and special geographical features
of that area. Secondly, it is a cool chance for us to disconnect from our daily routines. You know we work all
day and suffer a lot from working pressure. Therefore, what we really want to do is to travel somewhere and
release that tension. It is obvious that, glamorous sceneries help us feel more comfortable and love the nature
more. In conclusion, travelling not only widens our understanding but also reduces our stress.

+ What is a topic sentence?
A topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph. It not only tells topic of the paragraph but also
limits the topic to one or two areas that can be discussed completely in the space of a single paragraph. The
specific area is called the controlling idea.
Example:

Nowadays, people enjoy travelling as it brings them a large number of significant advantages such as
increasing human’s knowledge and helping reduce stress.
+ Supporting sentences develop the topic sentence. That is, they explain the topic sentence by giving reasons,
examples, facts, statistics and quotations.
Example:
Firstly, we can enlarge our cultural, historical and geographical knowledge. It is true that when we visit a
tourist attraction, it means we have a wonderful opportunity to observe and experience something decent
and gorgeous. We will be able to know more about the unique customs, colorful cultural activities,
historical events and special geographical features of that area. For example, when visiting Ho Chu Tich
mausoleum, we know about our leader’s background and great work.
+ A concluding sentence signals the end of the paragraph and leaves the readers with important points to
remember (The writer can express his/ her feeling or thought about the topic.)
Example:
In conclusion, travelling not only widens our understanding about the world but also eases our tension.
II. Tiêu chí khi viết đoạn văn
1. Unify and coherence (Sự liên kết và mạch lạc)
Unify means that you discuss only one main idea in a paragraph. The main idea is stated in the topic
sentence, and then each and every supporting sentence develops that idea. If, for example you announce in
your topic sentence that your topic sentence that you are going to discuss two advantages of travelling, discuss
only those. Don’t discuss any other ideas.

Coherence means that your paragraph is easy to read and understand because:

+ your supporting sentences are in some kind of logical order.
+ Your ideas are connected by the use of appropriate transition signals.

2. Tiêu chí về từ vựng
Range of vocabulary – Lượng từ vựng
Điều này có nghĩa là các bạn cần có đủ từ vựng cho một chủ đề nhất định được đưa ra trong đề, để có thể
chứng minh cho quan điểm của bạn. Các từ này nên đa dạng, tránh sự lặp lại, và quan trọng hơn hết là sử dụng

đúng trong hoàn cảnh, trong chủ đề đưa ra.
Ví dụ, bạn viết câu “it makes me happy” thì có thể khá bình thường/ common. Nhưng nếu đổi lại một chút là
“it brings me happiness” hay “it brings me a great source of happiness” là đã khá hơn rồi.
Spelling – Chính tả
Một bài viết được điểm cao chắc chắn cần sạch về lỗi chính tả. Hãy tập tự viết tay các bài viết, thay vì gõ trên
máy với công cụ hỗ trợ tự sửa lỗi chính tả.
Collocation – Sự kết hợp các từ
Bạn cần kết hợp các từ/ sắp xếp chúng một cách đúng chỗ.
Ví dụ với từ “challenge” (thử thách), chúng ta không nói “create a challenge” mà dùng “pose a challenge” (là/
tạo ra thử thách).
Hay “commit” crimes (phạm tội)
Vậy lời khuyên ở đây là các bạn đừng học những từ đơn lẻ, hãy học các cụm thường đi với nhau. Việc học
collocation này rất có lợi cho các bạn để viết đúng, thay vì “tự sáng tạo” ra các cụm từ, và đạt điểm cao trong
phần từ vựng này.
Thực ra, đây cũng là yếu tố để lấy điểm phần “less common” words, vì chỉ có người thành thạo về tiếng Anh
mới sử dụng và kết hợp các từ một cách chính xác.
3. Ngữ pháp
Range of grammar – Lượng cấu trúc ngữ pháp
Bạn nên sử dụng đa dạng các cấu trúc ngữ pháp. Ngoài ra, cần chú ý về cả độ phức tạp của ngữ pháp nữa. Ví
dụ: bạn có thể sử dụng cấu trúc “If” (khi muốn giải thích, hoặc đưa ra ví dụ); Hay cấu trúc mệnh đề quan hệ
(which, when, where, who, that).
Những cấu trúc ví dụ trên không quá phức tạp, nhưng có thể giúp bạn gây ấn tượng với giám khảo về cách
dùng ngữ pháp của mình.
Accuracy of grammar – Độ chính xác
Các bạn cần hạn chế hết sức có thể các lỗi ngữ pháp, nếu muốn được điểm cao trong bài viết. Các lỗi như: chia
động từ, hay mạo từ (a/an/the) cần phải tránh thông qua luyện tập thường xuyên.

Suggested writing
Nowadays, playing sports is popularly stimulated to people at different ages because of its advantages
such as improving our heath and relaxing our mind. First of all, playing sports makes us boost our heath. In
fact, when participating in a gym or football club, people will focus on physical activities and ignore
psychological pressure coming from work or study. Moreover, playing sports helps us increase immune
system. Therefore, we can stay away from serious diseases. Secondly, we can ease tension from sports
activities. Indeed, we feel physically and mentally exhausted after hard work and study. It is playing sports that
helps us release tiredness and tension. For example, when taking part in sports- games, we get fun from our
teammates. Besides, we seem to have pleasure and comfort during the games without thinking of working and
studying pressure. In conclusion, spending a little time playing sports, you will be able to gain a number of
remarkable benefits such as boosting health and reducing tension.
