Unit 4: Our past (6 lessons)
Lesson 1: Getting started - Listen and read
I. Aims:
Talking about past habits using “used to”
II. Teaching aids: - Tape
- Pictures
- Students themselves
III. Procudure:
1, Warm up:
Getting started: Look at the picture and write name the things that don’t belong to
the past
1- mobile phone 5-traditional dress (ao dai)
2- uniform 6- stereo
3- television 7-
4 - lighting fixture
2, Presentation:
- Pre - teach: look after (v) = take care of (v)
without (pre) >< with (pre)
folktale (n) chuyện cổ tích, dân gian
Great - grandma (n): Cụ bà
- Pre - questions:
+ where did Nga’s grandmother live when she was young?
+ What did she often do at that time?
- Ask ss to listen to the tape and then read the dialogue to find the answers to pre-
questions.
- Give new structure:
S + Used to + V
didn’t used to
* Note: new structure is used when acting was often in past, but now it isn’t.
3, Practice:
Repetition drill using word :

Example: I used to clean the house
- Let Ss do exercise 1 (P.39) : Ask and answer the questions
a, Nga’s grandmother used to live on a farm.
b,Beacause she had to stay home and help her mom and she used to look after her
younger brother and sister .
c, Nga’s great grandmother used to cook the meals, clean house and wash the
clothes.
d, She lit the lamp and he used to tell them stories.
e, Nga asked her grand mother to tell Nga the folktale “the Lost Shoe” at the end of
the conversation.

- Ask ss to talk about what they used to do when the were at primary school

Lesson 2: Speak
I. Aims:

Tacking about the difference between life in the past and that at present using “used
to”.
II. Teaching aids: - Pictures
- Students themselves
III. Procedure:
1, Warm up:
- Give some questions about the weather, students themselves
a, What the weather like today?
b, what did you user to do when you were small?
c, what didn’t you use to do when you were small?
2, Pre - speaking:
Revision:
a, True or False repetition drill:
- Let ss prepare some statements about Nga’s grandmother (some are true - some are
false). Ss repeat the True statements, for the False ones they have to stay silent.
+ She used to live on a farm  T
+ She used to go to school  F
+ She used to work in an office  F
+ She used to stay home  T
b, Transformation:
T says sth about Nga’ life now * Ss transform them to Nga’s Grandmom
- Nga goes to school life in the past
 But her grandmother used to

3, While - speaking:
- Get ss to wok in groups, discuss and write down the differences between life now
and in the past using the 2 pictures (P.40)

Eg: a, People used to live in small houses, but now they live in big houses and tall
buildings.
b, People used to walk, but now they go by bike, bicycle, cars,.....
c, Children didn’t used to go to school, but now they go to school everyday.
