GERUND AND PRESENT PARTICIPLE
Put the verbs in brackets into the correct verb form (gerund, present participle, infinitive):

Activity 1:

- Purpose: This activity focuses Ss on revision of gerund.

Grammar

- Instruction: Close the book and listen to the teacher.

T give Ss some examples: A gerund is the Verb – ing form.
Ex:

There’s no point in waiting.
I don’t mind cooking the meals.
Reading French is easier than speaking it.

- The gerund can be used in the following ways:

as subject of a sentence: Skiing can be dangerous.
as complement of a verb: Her hobby is painting.
after prepositions: He was accused of smuggling.
After certain verbs (eg. admit, avoid, deny, dislike, enjoy, excuse + object, forgive +
object, fancy/imagine, finish, keep, mind, etc.)

In noun compounds: My school has a swimming pool.

After the expressions: I can’t stand being stuck in traffic jams

Form of learning : individually, pairwork
T give Ss some form and usages of present participle:
Form: Verb – ing

Usages: The participle of most verbs has the form -ing and is used in the following ways:
a. as part of the continuous form of a verb
I am dancing.
She was working
b. after verbs of movement: go, come (With these verbs we can use the participles of verbs of
physical activity: dancing, riding, sailing, skiing, etc., also shopping.


Ex: Come dancing with me on Saturday.)
go shopping/ dancing/ swimming
c. after verbs of perception (see, hear, feel, smell, listen to, notice, watch, find, catch,
leave…) in the pattern: V+ O + present participle
I heard him singing.
I can smell something burning.
I left them talking. (They were talking when I left.)
d. as an adjective
It was an interesting film
It’s a bit worrying when the police stop you.

e. spend/ waste time/ money+ V-ing
be busy + V-ing
Don’t waste time playing games.
I spend two hours a day travelling to work.
She’s always busy cooking or cleaning
f. to replace a sentence or part of a sentence
He sang to himself. He walked down the road.
-> Singing to himself, he walked down the road.

Activity 3:

- Purpose: This activity helps Ss practise using gerund, present participle and infinitive

Exercise 1

- Instruction: Apply the theory of present participle in doing exercise 1.

Ask students to do this exercise individually first, then compare the answers with
friends
o Go round and provide help if necessary

Call on some student to go to the board and write their answer and others to comment

- Purpose: This activity helps Ss practise more about gerund or present participle.

Exercise 4

- Instruction: Apply the theory of perfect gerund in doing exercise 2.

Explain the difference between the simple past and the past perfect.
Ask students to do this exercise individually first, then compare the answers with
friends
