Deepwater Equipment
Systems
At the end of the lecture, you will be able to:
1. Appreciate the various type of equipment
systems used in deepwater operations

Heave Compensation
• As rig floats up and
down to to sea and
wave conditions.
• Heave compensator
ensure bit remains on
bottom.
• Compensators can be
crown mounted or
integral with hoisting
equipment (as shown)

ROVs
An ROV(remotely operated
vehicle) is used subsea when the
water depth is beyond diver depth.
•
• The ROV is controlled from the
surface through an umbilical.
• The ROV is normally equipped
with several TV cameras with
strong camera lights, one (1)
manipulator arm, and one (1)
grabber arm.

Subsea Wellheads
The subsea wellhead is the foundation
for all subsea wells. It provides
• a high pressure containment for the well
pressure
• landing/sealing/locking areas for casing
hangers and tubing hanger (Vertical Tree)
• structural rigidity to withstand tensional loads
and bending loads from risers and flowlines.
• a locking profile and seal area for the BOP and
tree hydraulic connectors

Subsea Trees
The Subsea Tree System
controls and contains the
production flow at the mudline

Subsea Tree
• The subsea tree consists of an
assembly of valves that controls the
flow of produced media (oil/gas).
•The valves are mostly controlled
remotely (open/close).
•Also facilitates vertical access to
the production bore to perform well
maintenance and injection of
chemicals to prevent hydrates,
corrosion and wax build-up.

Subsea BOP
The BOP (Blowout Preventer)
rapidly seals off around the
drillstring and/or across the empty
hole to contain downhole pressures.
•On floating rigs, the BOP is attached to
the top of the surface casing at the seabed.
•A subsea BOP contains extra control
systems than a surface BOP
•The BOP must be capable of latching to
and releasing from the wellhead
