UNIT 3: WAYS OF SOCIALIZING
LESSON 1: READING

I.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of the lesson students will be able to:
Develop reading skills and use the information from the text to answer the questions.
Guess the meaning of words and phrases based on contexts.
Have some background information about ways of socializing.
II. PREPARATION
- Textbook, lesson plan, handouts, cassette player and USB/ CD

1. WARM-UP (4’)
- Give students handouts with some communication
actions


- Ask students .to work in pairs and match the
pictures with suitable expression.
- Give feedback and correct answers

Lead in: today we are going to read an interesting
topic about “ways of socializing”.

2. PRE-READING (15’)
2.1 Ask and answer (3’)
- Ask students to work in pairs, look at the pictures,
ask and answer the questions on page 30.
- Call on some pairs to speak in front of the class.
- Give feedback if necessary.

2.2. Vocabulary (7’)
Should only teach the words do not appear in Task 1.
1. Attention (n): the act of listening to, looking

at or thinking about sth/sb carefully: (sự )chú
ý.
2. Clap (v): to hit your open hands together: vỗ
tay.
3. Whistle (v): the sound that you making by
forcing your breath out when your lips are

4. Signal (n):a movement or sound that you
make to give sb information, instructions, a
warning: dấu hiệu, tín hiệu
5. Acceptable (adj): agreed or approved of by
most people in a society: có thể chấp nhận
được.
6. Appropriate (adj): suitable, acceptable or
correct for the particular circumstances:
thích hợp.
7. Get off (V.P): to leave a bus, a train, a plane
or a boat: rời khỏi, ra khỏi.
Ex: We got off the bus and walked to my
house.
8. Jump up and down: to be very angry or
excited about sth: nhảy lên nhảy xuống.
- Ask students to give Vietnamese meaning of these
words
- Give the Vietnamese meaning of new words
- Read new words
- Ask students to listen and repeat.
- Listen and repeat after teacher.
2.3 Task 1 (P.32) (5’)

- Ask students to work individually, read the passage
and give the Vietnamese equivalents of the words
and phrases based on the context.


- Call on some students to give the answers.
- Give the correct answers.
Suggested answers:
1. Verbal (adj): relating to words, spoken, not
written: bằng lời, hữu ngôn.
2. Non-verbal (adj): not involving words or
speech: không bằng lời, phi ngôn.
3. Attract someone’s attention: thu hút sự chú ý
của ai.
4. Impolite (adj): not polite: không lịch sự.
(≠ polite: having or showing good manners
and respect for the feelings of others: lịch sự)
5. Rude (adj): having or showing a lack of
respect for other people and their feelings:
thô tục. thô lỗ.
6. Informality (n) a manner that does not take
forms and ceremonies seriously, a state of
being informal: thân mật, không nghi thức.
7. Approach (v): to come near to sb/sth in
distance or time: tiếp cận.
8. A slight nod will do: một cái gật đầu nhẹ là
đủ.

3. WHILE-READING (15’)
3.1. Task 2 (P.32) (4’)
- Ask students to work in pairs, read the passage
again and choose the suitable title for the passage.
- Call on some pairs to give the answers and the
reason for their choice.
- Give feedback and the correct answer.
Suggested answer:
A. (Attracting Attention: Non-verbal Cues).
(Choice B is not suitable because it only mention
one way of making non-verbal cue: waving
Choice C is not suitable because it states that all
the ways mentioned are the best while there are only
some appropriate ways).
3.2. Task 3 (P.32) (11’)
- Ask students to work in pairs, ask and answer the
questions in task 3.
- Go round the class and give help if necessary.

- Pair work.
- Give the answers and explanation.


- Call on some pairs to present their answer in front
of the class.
- Comment and give the correct answers.
Suggested answers:
1. When we want to attract someone’s attention,
we can use either verbal or non-verbal

communication.
2. They are strong actions that can easily be
seen.
3. If we want to attract the waiter’s attention,
we can wait until he passes near us, catch his
eye, and nod slightly to let him know we
would him to come to our table. Or we can
raise our hand slightly to show that we need
assistance.
4. If you are walking across the schoolyard and
see your teacher approaching you, you can
use a small friendly wave to attract his or her
attention.
5. Because pointing at someone is usually
considered rude.

4. POST-READING (10’)
The meanings of whistling and hand-clapping in
Vietnamese culture
- Ask students to work in groups of 4 (should be
mixed ability groups) and discuss the meanings of
whistling and hand-clapping in Vietnamese culture.
- Go round the class to help students if necessary.
- Call on some groups to present their answers.
- Give feedback.
Suggested ideas:
Whistling: in Vietnam, people whistle when they

feel happy, when they want to attract other people’s
attention in an informal way. Sometimes, a person
may whistle along with a song so that he/she can
feel relaxed.
Hand-clapping: in Vietnam, people clap their hands
when they want to encourage someone, they want to
despise someone, or they want to attract people’s
attention.

5. HOMEWORK. (1’)
- Summarize the main points of the lesson.
- Ask students to learn by heart all of the new words
and prepare the next part (Speaking).
