XV. Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or D) to each question.
SIBLINGS
When we are children, our sibling - that is, our brothers and sisters - are our first friends and first enemies. At the end of
life, they are often our oldest friends and oldest enemies. The effect of sibling relationships in childhood can last a
lifetime. Many experts say that the relationship among brothers and sisters explains a great deal about family life,
especially today when brothers and sisters often spend more time with one another than with their parents.
Studies have shown that sibling relationships between sister-sister pairs and brother-brother pairs are different. Sister
pairs are the closest. Brothers are the most competitive. Sisters are usually more supportive of each other. They are more
talkative, frank, and better at expressing themselves and sharing their feelings. On the other hand, brothers are usually
more competitive with each other.
Experts agree that the relationship among siblings is influenced by many factors. For example, studies have shown that
both brothers and sisters become more competitive and aggressive when their parents treat them even a little bit
differently from one another. But parental treatment is not the only factor. Genetics, gender, life events, people, and
experiences outside the family all shape the lives of siblings. Recently, one researcher demonstrated another factor: in
sibling relationships. It was discovered that children dislike watching their siblings fight. In fact, they respond to
arguments by taking sides -supporting one sibling and punishing the other.

Family Life In France
How close are you as a family? Corrinne mathieu, from Montpellier, France talked about her family life.
A.We usually see each other at least once a month, maybe more often. We have lunch together on Sunday if we
haven't got anything special to do. We live in Tula, which is about an hour and a half away, but we always come to
Moscow where my mother and father live. It's not so far. Usually my grandmother and my uncle and aunt are there
too — we're quite a large family! Sometimes my brother and his girlfriend come over — they live nearby. The meal

takes about four hours, we spend a lot of time chatting and there ‘s always lots to eat.
B.There's no one we call the head of the family, although my father's advice and opinion are very important in all
decisions we take. My uncle Vova in fact older than my father is, so I suppose he's the real head of the family. When
my grandfather was alive, he liked to think that the whole family organized itself around him, but these days it's
different. But we all try to discuss things together when we meet.
C.In most families, it's a small family group who live in the same house, mother, father and the children before
they get married. But if one of the grandparents dies, the other usually sells their home and goes to live with their
children. So it's quite common to have one grandparent living with you, but not more.
D.In France most children leave home when they get married. But there are some people who want to lead
independent lives and they find a flat as soon as they start their first job, even before they get married. Of course, the
main problem is that flats are so expensive to rent here, and we simply have to live with our parents.

Family Life in the United States
Family life in the United States is changing. Thirty or forty years ago, the wife was called a "housewife". She
cleaned, cooked, and cared for the children. The husband earned the money for the family. He was usually out working
all day. He came home tired in the evening, so he did not do much housework. And he did not see the children very
much, except on weekends.
These days, however, more and more women work outside the home. They cannot stay with the children all day.
They, too, come home tired in the evening. They do not want to spend the evening cooking dinner and cleaning up.
They do not have time to clean the house and do the laundry. So who is going to do the housework now? Who is going
to take care of the children?
Many families solve the problem of housework by sharing it. In these families, the husband and wife agree to do
different jobs around the house, or they take turns doing each job. For example, the husband always cooks dinner and

the wife always does the laundry. Or the wife cooks dinner on some nights and the husband cooks dinner on other
nights.
Then there is a question of the children. In the past, many Families got help with child care from grandparents.
Noe families usually do not live near their relatives. The grandparents often are to far away to help in a regular way.
More often, parents have to pay for child care help. The help may be a babysister or a day-care center. The problem with
this kind of help is the high cost. It is possible only for couples with jobs that pay well.
Parents may get another kind of help from the companies they work for. Many companies now let people with
children work part-time. That way, parents can spend more time with their children. Some husbands may even stop
working for a while to stay with the children. For these men there is a new word: They are called "househusband". In

the United States more and more men are becoming househusband every year.
These changes in the home mean changes in the family. Fathers can learn to understand their children better, and
the children can get to know their fathers better. Husbands and wives may also find changes in their marriage. They, too,
may have a better understanding of each other.

things that they eat as food. No matter what a creature eats, the food must have enough calories in it to maintain life.
Calories, or the energy stored in the food, provide the fuel which animals, including humans, need in other words
enough calories, will starve and die.

The term calorie has a scientific meaning. Calorie is a measure of an amount of energy just like pound is a
measure of weight. A calorie is officially defined as the amount of energy it takes to raise the temperature of a gram of
water by 1 degree Celsius, which is 1.8 degrees Fahrenheit. The terrm “ calorie” and “ Calorie” with a capital C have
two different meaning to scientists. The term Calorie ( with a capital C ) means one kilocalorie, the amount of energy
required to raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius. A kilogram is the same as 1,000 grams
and a kilocalorie is 1,000 calories. Food calories are always measured as Calories but average people don’t care much
about the difference and just use the word calories.
Food is composed of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. Nutritionists know that a gram of protein contains 4
Calories, a gram of fat has 9 Calories, and a gram of carbohydrate has 4 Calories.
All food contain calories. When we eat something it provides energy for our bodies to use when we are active.
We even need energy or calories while we are sleeping because, for example, our bodies are still breathing, our heart is
pumping, and we continue to digest the food in our stomachs. If a person eats more foodand more calories than is used
up by activity, the body stores the excess calories in case it might need it later when food might not be available. So a
person gains weight due to the extra food and calories. Similarity, if a person consumes fewer calories than are used
every day over several weeks and ismore active, that person will lose weight.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A,B,C or D on the answer sheet to indicate the correct answer
to each of the questions
The food we eat seems to have profound effects on our health. Although science has made enormous steps in making
food more fit to eat, it has, at the same time, made many foods unfit to eat. Some research has shown that perhaps
eighty percent of all human illnesses are related to diet and forty percent of cancer is related to the diet as well.,
especially cancer of the colon. People of different cultures are more prone to contract certain illnesses because of the
characteristic foods they consume.

That food is related to illness is not a new discovery. In 1945, government researchers realized that nitrates and
nitrites (commonly used to preserve color in meat) as well as other food additives caused cancer. Yet, these
carcinogenic additives remain in our food, and it becomes more difficult all the time to know which ingredients on the
packaging labels of processed food are helpful or harmful.
The additives that we eat are not all so direct. Farmers often give penicillin to cattle and poultry, and because of
this, penicillin has been found in the milk of treated cows.
Sometimes similar drugs are administered to animals not for medicinal purposes, but for financial reasons. The
farmers are simply trying to fatten the animals in order to obtain a higher price on the market. Although the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) has tried repeatedly to control these procedures, the practices continue.
A healthy diet is directly related to good health. Often we are unaware of detrimental substances we ingest.
Sometimes well-meaning farmers or others who do not realize the consequences add these substances to food without
our knowledge.

‘The best age to start learning the violin is between three and six,' says Margaret Porter, a violinist and music
teacher. 'It's the time when you are learning about the world.' Margaret, who lives in London, prefers to take pupils at
three and four, although she has made lots of exceptions for keen five-year olds. When she started teaching the violin in

1972, her first class consisted of her children's five-year-old school friends.
Magaret's pupils have group lessons. Each group has about a dozen pupils and each lesson lasts an hour, once a
fornight. In addition, each pupil has one individual lesson a week with her. Parents also have to attend the classes. It is
important that the parents take an active interest in the lessons.
From the earliest lessons pupils learn to play by ear. They do not even try to read music until they have been
playing for several years, and for a long time there is a big difference between their playing and reading of music.
Margaret says that her method is not supposed to produce great violinists, and always suggests that pupils who perform
particularly well should leave and study the violin using more traditional methods.

THE BEATLES
In the 1960s, The Beatles were probably the most famous pop group in the whole world. Since then, there have
been a great many groups that have achieved enormous fame, so it is perhaps difficult now to imagine how sensational
The Beatles were at that time. They were four boys from the north of England and none of them had any training in
music. They started by performing and recording songs by black Americans and they had some success with these
songs. Then they started writing their own songs and that was when they became really popular. The Beatles changed
pop music. They were the first pop group to achieve great success from songs they had written themselves. After that it
became common for groups and singers to write their own songs. The Beatles did not have a long career. Their first hit
record was in 1963 and they split up in 1970. They stopped doing live performances in 1966 because it had become too
dangerous for them – their fans were so excited that they surrounded them and tried to take their clothes as souvenirs!
However, today some of their songs remain as famous as they were when they first came out. Throughout the world
many people can sing part of a Beatles song if you ask them.

Read the passage below and choose the best answer (A, B, C or .D) to each question.
A YEAR WITH OVERSEAS VOLUNTEERS
I was with Overseas Volunteers (OV) for a year after leaving university, and I was sent to an isolated village in
Chad, about 500 km from the capital N'Djamena. Coming from a rich country, I got quite a shock as conditions were
much harder than I had expected. But after a few days I soon got used to living there. The people were always very
friendly and helpful, and soon I began to appreciate how beautiful the countryside was.
One of my jobs was to supply the village with water. The well was a long walk away. And the women used to

spend a long time every day carrying heavy pots backwards and forwards. So I contacted organization and arranged to
have some pipes delivered. We built a simple pipeline and a pump, and it worked first time. It wasn't perfect - there were
a few leaks, but it made a great difference to the villagers, who had never had running water before. And not only did
we have running water, but in the evenings it was hot, because the pipe had been lying in the sun all day. All in all, I
think my time with OV was a good experience. Although it was not well-paid, it was well worth doing, and I would
recommend it to anyone who was considering working for a charity.
