arethedayswhenworkersjustorganizedtheirfilesinelectronicfolders
andhadtocallthehelpdeskeverytimesomethingwasdeleted
accidentally.SharePointprovidesaself-serviceenvironmentwhereoffice
workerscantakecontrolofinformation-howit’sorganized,whogets
accesstoit,andhowit’sdisplayed.
Don’tfeelbadifyoudon’tknowSharePointfromShinola.Youaren’t
alone.ManyobstaclesarealongthepathtoasuccessfulSharePoint
implementation.ThisbookusesplainEnglishtogetyoustartedonyour

ComingOutoftheShadows
SinceSharePointwasfirstreleasedin2001,Microsofthasmadesteady
progressontheproduct’sfeatures.ThefirstfewreleasesofSharePoint
consistedprimarilyoftheabilitytodynamicallygenerateteamWebsites.
Thesesiteshosteddocumentlibraries,taskslists,andcalendarsto
enableasmallteamofuserstomanagedocumentsandcollaborateona
project.TheinitialproductwascalledSharePointTeamServicesbutwas
changedin2003toWindowsSharePointServices(WSS).
Thebuildingblocks-lists,libraries,anduser-customizableWebpagesusedbyWSStocreateteamsitesturnedouttobeveryversatileand
couldbeusedformorethanjustteamcollaboration.Manycompanies
startedcreatingSharePointsitestosolveallkindsofbusinessproblems,
suchasmanaginghelpdeskticketsandautomatingexpensecheck

requests.
Microsoftcreatedamoreexpensiveadd-onproduct,SharePointPortal
Server,thataddedtheabilitytocreateportalsandsearchacrossteam
sites.Theportalallowedcompaniestoprovidecentralizedaccesstoall
theirteamsites.
DespiteSharePoint’susefulness,theproduct’sadoptionwasnicheyand
sporadic.Also,therewas(andstillis)significantconfusioninthe
marketplaceaboutwhatSharePointisandwhatitdoes.WhenMicrosoft
satdowntoconsidertheproduct’sfutureafterthe2003release,theysaw
anopportunitytomoretightlyintegratetheproductwiththeOfficeclients
thatvirtuallyallofficeworkersalreadyhaveontheirdesktops.Increased
integrationwithOffice2007catapultedSharePointontocenterstage.
Microsoftusedahostofexistingandnewlycreatedproductstodevelop
the2007releaseofSharePoint.Likepiecesofapuzzle,thefollowing
productopportunitiescametogethertocreateabetterSharePoint:
ASP.NET2.0:ThereleaseofASP.NET2.0providedthe
foundationallayerthatwasmissinginpreviousversionsof
SharePoint.ByusingASP.NET2.0,Microsoftwasabletofocus


onbuildingabetterSharePointwithoutspendingsomuchtime
onlow-levelservices.SomeoftheASP.NET2.0featuresusedor
extendedbySharePointincludetheWebPartsframework,
personalization,pluggableauthentication,andmasterpages.
WSS3.0istrulyatestimonytowhatyoucanbuildwithASP.NET
2.0!
ContentManagementServer2002:Likechocolateandpeanut
butter,manycompanies,includingMicrosoft,realizedthat
ContentManagementServercouldbeusedtosupport
SharePoint.Insteadofhavingaseparateserver,Microsoft

decidedtorollWebcontentmanagementintoSharePoint.
Office2007:Microsoftrealizedthatcompaniesneeda
compellingreasontoupgradetoOffice2007.Addingmore
featurestoWordandExceldoesn’tcutitanymore.Inadditionto
completelyredesigningthelookandfeelofmostOfficeclientsfor
theOffice2007release,Microsoftaddedmanynewfeaturesthat
areavailableonlyviaaserverinfrastructure.SharePointisa
majorplayerinprovidingtheOffice2007serverinfrastructure.
Search:In2006,Googlewentafterthedesktop,andMicrosoft
wentaftersearch.Microsoftintroducedafamilyofsearch
productsthattargettheWeb,desktop,andenterprisewiththe
expresslystatedintentoftakingGooglehead-on.SharePointis
thekeyelementthatdeliversenterprisesearch.
WindowsWorkflowFoundation(WF):ThereleaseofWFwith
version3.0ofthe.NETFrameworkbringsaworkflowengineto
SharePoint,Office2007,andallapplicationsthatrunon
Windows.Workflowsmakeitpossibletostepthroughaprocess,
suchassubmittingadocumentforapproval.Buildingaseparate
workflowenginedecouplesworkflowcapabilitiesfromspecific
serverproducts.Insteadofhavingonlyafewproductswith
workflow,allproductscanhaveworkflow.SharePointextendsWF
andprovidesseveralout-of-the-boxworkflowimplementations
thatbusinessescanusetoautomatebusinessprocesseswithout
writingcustomcode.


Bytakingadvantageoftheseproductsalongwiththenewgoalsof
winningsearchwhilekeepingitstalonssecurelyfastenedtothebusiness
desktop,Microsoftcompletelyre-architectedSharePointintoalayerof
technologiesthatconsistsofthesetwoprimaryproducts:

WindowsSharePointServices(WSS)version3.0isthe
foundationalproductthatprovidesasetofbuildingblocksfor
creatingSharePointapplications.Thetwoprimaryusage
scenariosforWSSarestilldocumentmanagementand
collaboration.Thethirdusagescenarioisaplatformforcreating
applicationswithSharePoint.
MicrosoftOfficeSharePointServer(MOSS)2007istheserversideinfrastructurethatturnsOffice2007clientsintogenerators
andconsumersofcontentforSharePointapplications.MOSS
2007isthesuccessortoSharePointPortalServer2003.
AlthoughMOSSsupportsthecreationofportals,Microsofthas
expandedittoincludemanyenterprise-levelservices,suchas
