Thomas Edison is an example of gifted child who was very badly misunderstood. In fact, his teachers described young
Thomas as "dull". This is why Edison's mother took him out of school and taught him at home.
The Edison home, by the way, was well stocked with all kinds of books. Nancy Edison tried to expose her son to as many
different areas of knowledge as possible, but she especially encouraged him to spend most of his time on whatever really
interested him. By his twelfth birthday, he was clearly interested in science, especially chemistry. She made sure he had all the
necessary equipment and chemicals to conduct his experiments and he had all the science reference books that he needed.
Edison also gained a great deal from. his father, a small but successful businessman. Samuel Edison was characterized by
his ability to rescue whatever he could when his business failed so that any failure would become a learning experience. Edison
also had this positive attitude. Once he carelessly allowed his lab stove go out in the middle of winter, which led to many
expensive chemicals freezing. Instead of being angry he looked for ways to develop chemicals that could withstand sub-zero
temperatures without being affected.
