likethosebrickmasons,andQuarkXPressisalotlikethemortarand

Somedoverysimple,one-colorlayouts.Somedomoderately

masonwhowasbuildingacathedral—useQuarkXPresstocreate
polished,highlydesignedandillustratedworksofart.
QuarkXPress—likethemortarandbricksusedbythebrickmasonsin

most-celebratedgraphicdesigners.Italsoworksforpeoplewhocreate
simplerprojects,suchasschoolnewsletters.

Panes:QuarkXPresshasaninterfacefeature,tabbedpanes,
thatyoumayhaveseeninotherapplications.Thisisamethodof
stuffingseveraldialogboxesintoonedialogbox.Youseetabs,
likethoseinfilefolders,andbyclickingatab,theoptionsforthat
tabcometothefrontofthedialogboxinwhatiscalledapane.
Pointer:Thesmallgraphiciconthatmovesonthescreenasyou
moveyourmouseisapointer(alsocalledacursor).Thepointer
takesondifferentshapesdependingonthetoolyouselect,the
currentlocationofthemouse,andthefunctionyouare
performing.
Click:Thismeanstoquicklypressandreleasethemousebutton
once.OnmostMacmice,thereisonlyonebutton,butonsome
therearetwoormore.AllPCmicehaveatleasttwobuttons.If
youhaveamulti-buttonmouse,clicktheleftmostbuttonwhenwe
saytoclickthemouse.
Double-click:Thismeanstoquicklypressandreleasethe
mousebuttontwice.Onsomemulti-buttonmice,oneofthe
buttonscanfunctionasadouble-click.(Youclickitonce;the
mouseclickstwice.)Ifyourmousehasthisfeature,useit;it
savesstrainonyourhand.
Right-click:AWindowsfeature,thismeanstoclicktherighthandmousebutton.OnaMac’sone-buttonmouse,holdthe

QuarkXPressmakesadistinctionbetweenitemsandcontent.
Itemsarethingsyoudrawonapage—squares,circles,lines,andwavy
shapes—andthenmodifybyfillingthemwithcolor,changingtheirsize
orposition,andthelike.TheprimaryitemsinQuarkXPressarepicture
boxesandtextboxes,butlines,textpaths,andtablesarealsoused.You
canimporttextandgraphicalcontentintosomeoftheseitems.
Contentistextandpictures.(QuarkXPresscallsanyimportedgraphica
picture,whetherthegraphicisalogo,chart,linedrawing,orphotograph.)
Contentisalwaysplacedwithinanitem.Youcanhaveitemswithout

thedocument.Nowdocumenthasbeenreplacedbyproject,
andthedifferenceissignificant.True,aQuarkXPressproject
canincludeaprintdocument—suchasareportorabook
chapter—butitcanalsocontainmultipleprintandWeb
documents.Thesedocumentsareallstoredinthesamefile,
whichistheproject.
Insideeachprojectareitslayouts.Alayoutisasetofpagesthathave
thesamebasicpagesetup(suchastwo-sided,81⁄2in-by-107⁄8pages)
andcontenttype(printorWeb).

relatedcomponentsintoonefileratherthanhavingseparatefilesfora

Webversionsofitsannualreportnowhasbothversionsinthesamefile
