IsQuarkXPressTooHigh-EndforMe?
Rightnow,youmaybewonderingwhyonearthwearetellingthisstory
aspartoftheintroductiontoabookonQuarkXPress.Goodquestion.
But,whenyouthinkaboutit,thepeoplewhouseQuarkXPressarealot
likethosebrickmasons,andQuarkXPressisalotlikethemortarand
bricksusedbythosebrickmasonstodotheirwork.
Whatwearesayingisthis:ThereareallkindsofusersofQuarkXPress.
Somedoverysimple,one-colorlayouts.Somedomoderately
challenginglayouts,whichincludephotos,illustrations,andcomplex
charts.SomeevencreateWebpages.Stillothers—likethethirdbrick
masonwhowasbuildingacathedral—useQuarkXPresstocreate
polished,highlydesignedandillustratedworksofart.
QuarkXPress—likethemortarandbricksusedbythebrickmasonsin
ourstory—isatool.Nothingmore,nothingless.Itworksfortheworld’s
most-celebratedgraphicdesigners.Italsoworksforpeoplewhocreate
simplerprojects,suchasschoolnewsletters.
Thepointis,QuarkXPresscanneverbetoohigh-endforyou,orfor

anyoneelse,becauseyoupickandchoosewhichpartsofthistoolyou
needtouse.Also,keepinmindthatifyoucreateanytypeofprintorWeb
layout,youcan
benefitfromtheprogram’sfeatures.Sure,it’struethatifyourlayoutsare
simple,youwon’tneedtouseallthesophisticatedfeaturesin
QuarkXPress.But,whenyouthinkaboutit,isn’titnicetoknowthatthese
featuresareavailablewhenandifyoueverneedthem?Andthatyou
won’toutgrowtheprogramasyoubecomemoreproficientwithpage
design?Wethinkso.


HowtoUseThisBook
Althoughthisbookhasinformationthatanylevelofpublisherneedsto
knowtouseQuarkXPress,thisbookisalsoforthoseofyouwhoare
fairlynewtothefield,orwhoarejustbecomingfamiliarwiththeprogram.
WhatwetrytodoistotakethemysteryoutofQuarkXPressandgiveyou
someguidanceonhowtocreateabunchofdifferenttypesoflayouts.
Herearesomeconventionsusedinthisbook:
Menucommandsarelistedlikethis:Style→TypeStyle→Bold.
Ifwedescribeasituationinwhichyouneedtoselectonemenu
andthenchooseacommandfromasecondarymenuorlistbox,
wedoitlikethis:ChooseFile→GetPicture(orpressz+EonMac
orCtrl+EinWindows).Afterthefirstmention,wedropthe
platformreference.Thisshorthandmethodofindicatinga
sequenceofcommandsisoftenfollowedbythekeyboard
shortcut,asshowninthisexample.
z:ThisistheMacintosh’sCommandkey—themost-used
shortcutkey.ItsWindowsequivalentisCtrl.
Keycombinations:Ifyou’resupposedtopressseveralkeys
together,weindicatethatbyplacingplussigns(+)betweenthem.

ThusShift+z+AmeanspressandholdtheShiftandzkeys,and
thenpressA.Afteryou’vepressedtheAkey,letgooftheother
keys.(Thelastletterinthesequencedoesnotneedtobeheld
down.)Wealsousetheplussigntojoinkeystomouse
movements.Forexample,Option+dragmeanstoholdtheOption
keywhendraggingthemouse.
Panes:QuarkXPresshasaninterfacefeature,tabbedpanes,
thatyoumayhaveseeninotherapplications.Thisisamethodof
stuffingseveraldialogboxesintoonedialogbox.Youseetabs,
likethoseinfilefolders,andbyclickingatab,theoptionsforthat
tabcometothefrontofthedialogboxinwhatiscalledapane.
Pointer:Thesmallgraphiciconthatmovesonthescreenasyou


moveyourmouseisapointer(alsocalledacursor).Thepointer
takesondifferentshapesdependingonthetoolyouselect,the
currentlocationofthemouse,andthefunctionyouare
performing.
Click:Thismeanstoquicklypressandreleasethemousebutton
once.OnmostMacmice,thereisonlyonebutton,butonsome
therearetwoormore.AllPCmicehaveatleasttwobuttons.If
youhaveamulti-buttonmouse,clicktheleftmostbuttonwhenwe
saytoclickthemouse.
Double-click:Thismeanstoquicklypressandreleasethe
mousebuttontwice.Onsomemulti-buttonmice,oneofthe
buttonscanfunctionasadouble-click.(Youclickitonce;the
mouseclickstwice.)Ifyourmousehasthisfeature,useit;it
savesstrainonyourhand.
Right-click:AWindowsfeature,thismeanstoclicktherighthandmousebutton.OnaMac’sone-buttonmouse,holdthe
Controlkeywhenclickingthemousebuttontodotheequivalent

ofright-clickinginprogramsthatsupportit.Onmulti-buttonMac
mice,assignoneofthebuttonstotheControl+clickcombination.
Dragging:Draggingisusedformovingandsizingitemsina
QuarkXPresslayout.Todraganitem,positionthemousepointer
ontheitem,pressandholddownthemousebutton,andthen
slidethemouseacrossaflatsurface.

featuresandthenskewed,slanted,stretched,andshrunkthemintonew
forms.Somefolkslovedhiswork;othersfoundithardtofigureout.But
youhadtoadmirethefactthatitwasunique.
Wenamedthispartofthebookafterthefamousartistbecauseittellsnot
onlyhowtouseQuarkXPressasanillustrationtool,butalsohowtotake
normal-lookingtextandgraphicsanddistortthem.Whywouldyouwant

Thepaste-upmethod
QuarkXPressusesapaste-upmetaphorforpagedesign.It’sidealfor
creatingtextandgraphicelementblocks,placingthemonapage,then
resizingandpositioningthemuntilyou’rehappy.First,yousetupthe
basicprojectframework,includingthepagesizeandorientation,
margins,andcolumns.Youfillthatframeworkwithboxesthathavetext,

boxesthatcontainpictures,andwithlines.Figure1-1showsasimple
pagelayoutinQuarkXPress.

Itemsandcontent


QuarkXPressmakesadistinctionbetweenitemsandcontent.
Itemsarethingsyoudrawonapage—squares,circles,lines,andwavy
shapes—andthenmodifybyfillingthemwithcolor,changingtheirsize
orposition,andthelike.TheprimaryitemsinQuarkXPressarepicture
boxesandtextboxes,butlines,textpaths,andtablesarealsoused.You
canimporttextandgraphicalcontentintosomeoftheseitems.
Contentistextandpictures.(QuarkXPresscallsanyimportedgraphica
picture,whetherthegraphicisalogo,chart,linedrawing,orphotograph.)
Contentisalwaysplacedwithinanitem.Youcanhaveitemswithout
contentbutyoucannothavecontentwithoutitems.

Projectsandlayouts
New BeforeQuarkXPress6,theprogram’sbasiclayoutelementwas
thedocument.Nowdocumenthasbeenreplacedbyproject,
andthedifferenceissignificant.True,aQuarkXPressproject
canincludeaprintdocument—suchasareportorabook
chapter—butitcanalsocontainmultipleprintandWeb
documents.Thesedocumentsareallstoredinthesamefile,
whichistheproject.
Insideeachprojectareitslayouts.Alayoutisasetofpagesthathave
thesamebasicpagesetup(suchastwo-sided,81⁄2in-by-107⁄8pages)

andcontenttype(printorWeb).
Designersliketheproject/layoutconceptbecauseitletsthemgroup
relatedcomponentsintoonefileratherthanhavingseparatefilesfora
singleproject.Considersomeapplications:Aprintmagazinethathasa
foldouttableinanarticlenolongerneedsaseparatedocumentforthe
foldout,withitsdifferentpagesettings.Acompanythatcreatesprintand
Webversionsofitsannualreportnowhasbothversionsinthesamefile
forconsistency.Abusinessreportcancombinetwo-sidedpageswith
single-pagechapterdividers.
