II. Read the following passage carefully and decide if the statements about the text are TRUE or FALSE. (1pt)
Americans get on a first-name basis (= use each other’s given names) easily. Nearly all Americans under 50 – friends, neighbours,
co-workers and business people – use each other’s first names. In the United States people are afraid of being too formal, whereas
in Britain, if people are not sure how to address somebody they call them “Mr. Richard” “Mr. Davies”, etc. rather than risk offense by
using their first names.
Some Americans are very open and tell others a great deal about their private lives. Though people are not embarrassed to hear
private things, they like to choose whether or not to give private information, so it is not polite to ask personal questions. The British
are generally less willing to talk about personal matters except to close friends.
In the United States, people may work longer hours and have little time for a social life. In Britain, some people become close
friends with people they work with while others prefer to keep their work and their personal life separate.
TRUE FASLSE
34. Americans don’t often use their first names.
35. Americans don’t like to be too formal.
36. The British are less willing to talk about their private matters than the Americans.
37. Most Americans have plenty of time for social life.
