EXAM STRESS
1. Symptoms of exam stress
According to Professor Turnbull, a neurologist, more than 25% of America teenagers feel stressed at
least once a day. And nothing gets students down than exams. Nearly 90% of teenagers suffer from
stress at least once. “They come down with migraines, and many have problems eating and sleeping.”
2. Extra stress
Fear of failing exams is understandable. However, pressure from parents and teachers adds to the stress.

“My parents expect me to be good at everything – academic subject, sport, and music! It’s ridiculous,” says
Macy, 16, from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
3. Prepare your environment
3

“You should make a revision plan that is realistic and that gives you enough time to study,” recommends Prof
Turnbull. “Students should eat healthy meals – oily fish and green vegetables contain chemicals that help you
memory. The revision environment is important. Student ought to find a quiet place to revise. They mustn’t
leave things on their desk that can distract them, such as a cell phone. And they should see their friends just a
few times a week – and if possible, no testing and no emails.
4. How to revise
“Make a list before you start revising each day. Study the most difficult things early in the day, when your
memory is fresher. After you have finished revising, check the list – and then rest. Exam stress wears off
when you read a magazine, listen to music, or do sports.”
5. On the big day
“If you start to feel nervous, breathe deeply for a minute. Then skim all the exam questions. Read all the
instruction carefully. How many questions do you have to answer? Are there any sections that you don’t have
to answer? Be prepared – then you won’t get any nasty surprises halfway through the exam.”
6. When it is all over
“Well done! You’ve done the best you could. Don’t look at the questions with your friends, as this can
make you worry more. Concentrate on your next exam. But take a rest first.

Part II(2 ms) Read the text and do the tasks that follow.
TEAM LEARNING.
A. Research has shown that students, especially those in high school and university, can learn as much, or
more, from classmates as they do from instructors and textbooks. When students work effectively in a
supportive group, experience can be a very powerful way to improve achievement and satisfaction with
learning experience. The list below describes important activities that a learning team can work together.
Sharing Class Notes.
Get together with other students immediately after class to share and compare notes. One of your teammates
may have understood something you missed or vice versa.
Doing research.
Studies show that many students are unfamiliar with doing research, particularly using the library. Forming
research teams is an effective way to prepare for class presentation of school social studies such as history,
geography, literature, and economics. Working in groups, you could locate and share information to
improve your own work.
7

Reviewing Test Results.
After receiving test results, members of a learning team can review their individual tests together to identify
their mistakes, and to find out any “ modal” answers that earned good grades. You can use this information
to improve your performance on later tests or assignments.
B. Not all leaning teams, however, are equally successful. Sometimes teamwork is ineffective because
people do not know how to form a good team. The following suggestions are strategies for maximizing the
performance of teamwork.
Seeking Right Teammates.
In forming team, look for classmates who are attentive, active in class, and cooperative while working in
groups.
Forming Teams with Both Genders.

Membership should include both boy and girl students of different personalities. Such diversity will bring
different life experience and different styles of thinking and learning strategies to your team. However,
choose only friends or teammates with shared interests and lifestyles.
Keeping Your Group Size Small.
A small group allows for more face-to -face interaction and it is also much easier for you to get together
outside of class.
In short, teamwork is one of the most valued activities in schools and today’s work world.

Lee and Erik Gundersen)

FIRST TIME IN THE AIR
When John Mills was going to fly in an aeroplane for the first time, he was frightened. He did not
like the idea of being thousands of feet up in the air. “ ‘I also didn’t like the fact that I wouldn’t be in
control,” says John. “I’m a terrible passenger in the car. When somebody else is driving, I tell them what
to so. It drives everybody crazy.”
However John couldn’t avoid flying any longer. It was the only way he could visit his grandchildren
in Canada. “I had made up my mind that I was going to do it, I couldn’t let my son, his wife and their three
children travel all the way here to visit me. It would be so expensive for them and I know Tom’s business
isn’t doing so well at the moment – it would also be tiring for the children – it’s a nine-hour flight!” he
says.
To get ready for the flight John did lots of reading about aeroplanes. When he booked his seat, he
was told that he would be flying on a Boeing 747, which is better known as a jumbo jet. “I needed to know
as much as possible before getting in that plane. I suppose it was a way of making myself feel better. The
Boeing 747 is the largest passenger aircraft in the world at the moment. The first one flew on February 9 th
1969 in the USA. It can carry up to 524 passengers and 3.400 pieces of luggage. The fuel for aeroplanes is
kept in the wings and the 747’s wings are so big that they can carry enough fuel for an average car to be
able to travel 16,000 kilometres a year for 70 years. Isn’t that unbelievable? Even though I had discovered
all this very interesting information about the jumbo, when I saw it for the first time, just before I was going
to travel to Canada, I still couldn’t believe that something so enormous was going to get up in the air and
fly. I was even more impressed when I saw how big it was inside with hundreds of people!”
The biggest surprise of all for John was the flight itself. “The take-off itself was much smoother
than I expected although I was still quite scared until we were in the air. In the end, I managed to relax,
enjoy the food and watch one of the movies and the view from the window was spectacular. I even managed
to sleep for a while! Of course,” continues John, “the best reward of all was when I arrived in Canada and
saw my son and his family, particularly my beautiful grandchildren. Suddenly, I felt so silly about all the

years when I couldn’t even think of getting on a plane. I had let my fear of living stop me from seeing the
people I love most in the world. I can visit my son and family as often as I like now!”
51. Why did John Mills fly in an aeroplane?
A. He wanted to go on holiday

B. It was his hobby.
C. It made him feel safer.

53. What happened when he saw the jumbo jet for the first time?
A. He felt much safer.
B. He liked the shape of it.
C. He couldn’t believe how big it was.
D. He thought the wings were very small.
54. What surprised John most about the flight?
A. that he liked the food.
B. that he was able to sleep
C. that there was a movie being shown
D. that the view was good
55. How did John feel about his fears in the end?

Section D: Reading comprehension
1. Read the following passage and choose the best answer among A, B, C or D
Like all growing plants, the potato is a product of the seamless cooperation of soil, temperature and
water. However, while potatoes thrive on the moisture, so does the potato's worst affliction, late blight.
After attacking and blackening the leaves, phytophthora infestans spores move down the stem, eventually
reaching the rotting the tubers in the ground. Even those potatoes harvested and stored may carry the fungus
and be wiped out.
The search for the cause of the blight that ruined the Irish plants in the 1840's and the Polish plants
in 1980 preoccupied researchers for years. M. J. Berkeley, a 19th -century naturalist, first recognized that
the fungus appearing on the potato plants in 1845 in Ireland and elsewhere was not the result of the blight
but the cause. Working in Germany, another scientist, Henrich Anton de Bary, proved Berkeley's theory by
identifying the fungus as an outgrowth on the host. It took another hundred years, however, before the
mystery of the origin of the fungus was solved, and the pathogen itself was traced to central Mexico.
Late blight has traditionally been held in check with costly chemical fungicides. Unfortunately, for
many farmers, the chemical are too expensive, if available at all. Therefore today, identifying or creating

blight - resistant potato species is the major goal of agricultural researchers interested in late blight.
1. Where does late blight begin?
A
in the stem of the potato plants
B
on the leaves of the potato plants
C
in potatoes in the ground
D
in potatoes that are being stored
2. M. J. Berkeley is known for ………..
A
discovering the cause of late blight.
B

C
understanding that the fungus was a result of late blight.
D
recognizing that the blight in Ireland was the same as the blight in Germany.
3. Where did the fungus come from originally?
A
Ireland
B
Poland
C
Germany
D
Mexico
4. The work of Heinrich Anton de Bary supported the theory that …
A

blight was a disease caused by potatoes.
B
late blight caused a fungus.
C
the cause of late blight was a fungus.
D
German potato blight and Irish potato blight had different causes
5. According to the passage, current researcher is primarily aimed at
A
finding types of potatoes not so affected by late blight
B
developing more effective chemical fungicides to fight late blight
C
developing more expensive chemical fungicides to fight late blight
D
