*Grammar : The passive voice
I. PRONUNCIATION
/p/: pea, pan, Paul, cap, provide, power
/b/: bee, ban, bad, cab, bright, back
NOTE
- When “b” is put after “m”, it is a silent sound
Ex: comb /kəʊm/, climb /klaɪm/, bomb /bɒm/,...
- The sound /p/ is not read when it begins of a word and after it are “s” or “n”
Ex: pneumatic/njuːˈmæt.ɪk/, psalm /sɑːm/
- The sound /p/ is not read when it stands before “t”
Ex: empty /ˈemp.ti/, receipt /rɪˈsiːt/
Practice the sentences:
1) Paul buys Bill a big pad of paper.
2) A black bee is picking some pollen.
3) Put the blouses in the paper bags.
4) Paul borrowed a book about puppies from the library.
5) The beautiful carpet is my brother’s present.
6) Is this picture painted on the pupil’s caps.
II. GRAMMAR: THE PASSIVE VOICE => be + P2
Ex: Our environment is being seriously polluted.
A lot of trees are cut down every year.
Everything has been prepared so well.
The boy was named Peter.
 Present simple tense: S + is/ are/ am + P2
 Present continuous tense: S + is/ am/ are being + P2

 Present perfect tense: S + have/has been + P2
Ex: The children are taken to school everyday.
The hospital is being repaired.
He has just been given a gift for his birthday.
 Past simple tense: S + was/ were + P2
 Past continuous tense: S + was/ were being + P2
 Past perfect tense: S + had been + P2
Ex: The house was painted green.
The cat was being fed when they came.
Before it rained, the seeds had been planted.
 Modal in passive: S + modal verb + be + P2
Ex: The date of the meeting can be changed again.
The poor should be taken care of.
Exercise 1: Choose the right form of the verbs in brackets.
