ELECTRIC CARS
Electric cars are not a new idea. People have been working on developing electric cars
since the 1960s! So, what has been taking them so long to hit the road? Most electric cars were
designed to use big batteries. These large, heavy devices had to be recharged between uses. The
cars could not go very far before they needed to be recharged. Then, recharging the batteries
took a long time. Needless to say, not many people were willing to give up their reliable gas
powered cars for such an alternative.
Then, in 2000, two car companies began selling “hybrid” electric cars. These electric
cars used gasoline in addition to electricity, but they never had to be recharged! The electric car
finally had both a workable and marketable design.
