<b>1.Listen, point and repeat. Colour (10’)</b>
Introduction of letter Y, its sound and how to
pronounce the words beginning with Yy
- Show the students the yo-yo phonic card. Point to
it and say: /j/. The students repeat.
- Then say /j /- yo-yo. The students repeat.
- Mime playing with a yo-yo and say: /j /- yo-yo.
Encourage the students to do the same.
- Say the letter, the students perform the action and
- Follow the same procedure: /j/- yellow (point to
something yellow), /j /- yacht (rock back and forth
from foot to foot and make wave sounds)
- Write the letter Yy on the board next to the
phonics cards. Point to it and say: “This is the
letter /wai/. The letter /wai/ makes the /j / sound.
The students repeat both sounds.
<b>Activity: Where’s the letter? (10’)</b>
- Teacher prepares photocopies of a page/ pages
from some story books.
- Ask the students to work in pairs/ groups
- Hand out the photocopies and ask students to
search for and circle the letter Yy on the page(s).
- In a limited time, the pair/ group has circled the
most Yy is the winner.
-This game can help the students understand the
link between the letter sounds and words in books.
<b>Pupil’s book open</b>. <b>(7’)</b>
- Point to and elicit the sound of the letter and the
words. /j /- yo-yo, /j /- yellow, /j /- yacht
- Play the CD. The students listen, point and
repeat.
- The students color the letters Yy (explain that
they can use any colors they like).
- Teacher goes around the class and elicits the
letter and the word from individual students.

words in sentence <b>(6’)</b>
- Point to the yo-yo and say: Yes, I have a yo-yo.
<i>Yes, it is yellow! The students repeat.</i>
- Do the same procedure for the word yacht
- Play the CD. The students listen and point.
- Say: Yes, I have a yo-yo. Yes, it is yellow! Ask
the students to point to the corresponding items
- Repeat with the remaining item
- Ask the students to colour the yo-yo and the
<i>yacht yellow.</i>
- Go around the classroom ask the students to
name the item they are colouring.
<i>e.g. Teacher: (pointing to the yo-yo) Yes, I have </i>
<i>a …</i>
<i> Student 1: yo-yo! etc</i>
<b>3. Chant and show! (5’)</b>
- Put up the yo-yo, yellow and yacht phonics cards
on the board
- Point to the phonics cards and say: /j /- yo-yo,
/j /- yellow, /j/- yacht. The students repeat.
- Play the CD. The students listen, follow in their
books and chant.
- Ask the students to do the actions of the words
when they chant.
- Repeat the chant without the CD. Keep the
rhythm by clapping hands. Pause before the words
<b>2. Listen and point. </b>
<b>Colour.</b>
(yo-yo, yellow, yacht) and encourage the students
to name the items.
<b>Activity: Chant in group (Optional)</b>
Divide the class into 3 groups (yo-yo, yellow,
yacht). Each group says the appropriate chant
while the rest of the class claps.
Ask each group to mime the corresponding
<b>Production (5’)</b>
<b>Activity 1: Writing in the air</b>
- Show the letter Yy again, have students write the
Yy in air with their fingers.
<b>Activity 2: My sound book</b>
- Ask the students to take out their notebooks.
- Ask them to draw a big letter Y in their
notebooks.
- Ask them to decorate the letter.
Explain to the students that they will look at the
letter and practice saying the sound at home.
