About two hundred years ago, man lived in greater harmony with his environment because
industry was not much developed. Today the situation is quite different. People all over the world

are worried about what is happening to the environment because of modern industry and the need
for more and more energy. Newspapers and magazines write about water pollution, air pollution
and land pollution. Why is there so much discussion about pollution? After all, people have been
polluting the world around them for thousands of years.

In the past, there were not many people, so they could move to other places when their

The gases from the exhaust of cars have also increased air pollution in most cities. The lead in
petrol produces a poisonous gas which often collects in busy streets surrounded by high buildings.
Children who live in areas where there is a lot of lead in the atmosphere cannot think as quickly as
other children and are clumsy when they use their hands.

There are other long term effects of pollution. If the gases in the atmosphere continue to increase,
the earth‘s climate may become warmer. A lot of the ice near the pole may melt and may cause

Straight after the firework display on the eve of the New Lunar Year, many people left piles of
garbage in downtown Saigon. The Bach Dang Park along Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City was
filled with rubbish after the firework display on Lunar New Year” Eve. Newspapers, cardboards,
plastic bags are seen left behind by spectators who used them to cover the ground while sitting to
watch fireworks by the river. Despite plenty of dust bins in the park, garbage is not seen thrown
into them, but around them. The section of Ton Duc Thang Street, stretching from Khanh Hoi
Bridge to Dong Khoi Street, is also flooded with rubbish. As wind blows or cars pass, plastic
bags are swept into the median strip. A section of the median strip in Ton Duc Thang street is
seen deformed after locals jostled for space to see firework. Young people eat and joke in the
“sea of rubbish” on Ton Duc Thang Street. Street sweepers work hard on Nguyen Hue Walking
Street “ After each firework display, garbage has been seen everywhere. Youths wildly throw
